Hello, everyone!

[Behold, a wild Neil appears! Looking vaguely bemused, but all in all cheerful.]

It’s been ages since I had to introduce myself like this-- I’m out of practice. My name is Neil. I got here a few days ago, with my friend Todd. We came here from a place called the City, which was a little like this-- most of the people living there came from different worlds, or at least a lot of us did.

[He pauses, all too aware that this sounds a little nuts, but hey. It would've sounded crazier if they'd ended up in a proper self-contained universe, right?]

And things like yesterday-- with all those little furry things-- would happen every couple of days, too. Or other kinds of... Well, we called them curses, though I don't think you have anything exactly like it. But, I guess, we're used to strange things.

[And he smiles brightly.]

Anyway. I was speaking to the-- to one of the Wardens, yesterday morning, and she suggested I ought to get involved in some activities here.

[Because Neil wants his stuff back. His books, how is he supposed to get by without the few ones he packed?]

So I thought I'd introduce myself, and ask for some suggestions. Where should I start?

I suppose that depends entirely on where your interests lie. There's all sorts of things to do here and if you don't see anything, you can always start something new.

I'm an actor, and in the City I ran a bookstore, but we did all sorts of things. I try to be adventurous.

[ the acting part reminds her of beverly and she feels the absence of her friend just a little more strongly. ]

There is a library, but I know it isn't quite the same. You might be able to ask around to see if anyone else is interested in acting. You might be surprised.

[ there's plenty of other things to do, but that could be a good starting point. ]

Todd worked in the Library. It's not the same here-- we had to pay rent in the City. I'll miss the shop but I can live without it.

[He smiles.]

As for the acting, I'm sure sooner or later I will. I wonder if there's anyone who'd be willing to direct a play, though...

I have a friend who would do that, but she isn't here. Until she does arrive, we may have to find someone else.

[ look at that smile. she's teasing. ]

In the meantime, why don't you ask around? It couldn't hurt to see if anyone else is interested.

I'm not much of a director. I did it, when I had to, but it's not what I'm really interested in.

[Tease away, lady, it's hard to get Neil Perry flustered.]

I guess I might. But that doesn't mean I can't look into what already exists here, too. It sounds like I've got plenty of time to fill.

[And he doesn't even sound disappointed by the fact.]

There's a variety of other things, even a school that offers classes you could look into and a baseball team, if you like sports. I've also seen plenty of restaurants and other places that would probably not mind more volunteers.

Considering there's nothing in the way of currency, I would say no. [ she smiles, though. ] The wardens don't seem to enforce much. But it is something to do with your time.

Of course, I understand. It was different in the City, that's all-- you had to do something if you were over eighteen. For rent and things like that.

I can assure you there's no rent to pay here unless someone has been withholding information. Everything is free as long as you play by the rules.

I guess that's only fair. If it's a prison.

[It really doesn't seem that bad...]

[ she smiles. even if their rules are interesting and no one really believes they should be here, it's not a terrible place. most times. hey, at least the tribbles are gone. ]

Is there anything else I can help you with? If you find yourself in need of someone to talk to, I do offer completely private, completely confidential counseling sessions. Though you do seem to be more adjusted than some.

I think I'm all right, thank you. It's good that you do that; I know it can be difficult, getting used to this kind of thing.

I didn't see a reason why I shouldn't offer sessions in a stressful place like this if that was what I would be doing at home anyway. [ just another day, but really she's happy to help at all. ]

I hope you settle in well. [ mostly for his own peace of mind. ]

Thanks. I'm sure we'll be just fine.

[CONFIDENCE, Neil has it. No, actually, what he has is all he needs, which is to say Todd. He's easy to please.]
