Day 258 : Paranormal Studies : Open Class Mingle
[Sam looks over the class. There's someone missing. He knew Reid would be gone from Kitty's announcements earlier, but maybe he was still hoping for something else. He hasn't really allowed himself to get close to people here—not many anyway. Reid was getting in that circle.

But life and class goes on, right? He clears his throat.]
Today, we're going to talk about the djinn. Some of you might know them as genies.

Overview : Djinn

But they don't actually live in lamps. They don't even really grant wishes, they just make you think they do.

They're a humanoid species with ornately tattoo-covered skin who usually live in ruins with lots of hiding places. They have the ability to read minds and see a person's deepest desires. They also create a poison they use to infect their prey. This will knock the person out, putting them in a hallucinogenic dream state where they think their wish is being granted. During this time the djinn feeds on their blood—slowly. It can take a few days before the victim dies, but it would feel like longer than that in the dream world.

There are lots of references to the djinn in the Qu'ran and Arab folklore. They're believed to occupy a parallel world to mankind. It's said that they were created by Allah in a smokeless fire.

[ DJINN ]

Practical : Defense of Djinn

If you encounter a djinn the most important thing is not letting them touch you. That's how you get infected and once you're trapped in your own fantasy the chance of breaking out of that is pretty low. During the infection their eyes and hands can glow.

You can break their hold over a person by killing the djinn with a silver knife dipped in lamb's blood.

[ Silver ]

Case Study : Joliet, IL

We came across one in Joliet, Illinois. Some girls had gone missing and we were tracking it. Dean found it in an abandon warehouse, but it got the better of him. Before I got there he managed to play out a couple of days in dream reality. He told me later that he was able to break free of it by killing himself in the dream. You just have to be really sure you're in a djinn-fueled dream to do something like that. Anyway, I had the knife on me and the djinn showed up, there was a fight, and we managed to get one of the girls out of there in time.

Questions & Discussion
Okay, I think that's everything, so thoughts? Questions? Anyone want to say be careful what you wish for?

(OOC: Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail, but feel free to bring more into it, but his canon point is toward the send of season 5, so nothing beyond that. Also, this is backdated to class time.)

So...it sucks a lot of the time. [Repeating his words. Sam kind of gets that. He's a hunter with a few drops of demon blood in him. To some other hunters he's just another thing to hunt.]

Yeah ... It sucks.

I'd tell you it gets better, but some things are just hard. It will make you stronger though. [Even as it tries to beat you down.]

I don't think getting better, or stronger, is an option for me. But thanks anyway. [It's not that he wants to be beat, but he's getting tired of fighting, and he's not sure why he's held on this long.]

I've never been very fortunate. I don't expect that will change.

[It's like you're the Eeyore of people.]

I guess I can't argue with that. [Sam hasn't exactly been the luckiest guy himself.]

[Wish I could say yes ... but I can't.]

Well, that's a relief. [And he might sound a little sarcastic there, but he means it.]

It's still not a reason to give up.

Why? Why can't I give up yet? Am I not old enough? I don't have enough experience points? Do I have go through hell again?

Do you think children of gods have any other choice?

Honestly? I haven't thought that much about the children of gods until now. But I think it feels better to at least believe you have that kind of control. You can also surprise yourself.

Our lives are orchestrated around wars and prophecies. You can pretend to have some choice in how things turn out, but in the end, was it really, or had they planned it all out from the beginning?

I've been told my life was all determined by prophecies too, but it's not something I'm accepting without a fight.

[With your brother, your trusty angel pal and a can do attitude.]

You don't give in. You find away to defy expectations.
