Day 258 : Paranormal Studies : Open Class Mingle
[Sam looks over the class. There's someone missing. He knew Reid would be gone from Kitty's announcements earlier, but maybe he was still hoping for something else. He hasn't really allowed himself to get close to people here—not many anyway. Reid was getting in that circle.

But life and class goes on, right? He clears his throat.]
Today, we're going to talk about the djinn. Some of you might know them as genies.

Overview : Djinn

But they don't actually live in lamps. They don't even really grant wishes, they just make you think they do.

They're a humanoid species with ornately tattoo-covered skin who usually live in ruins with lots of hiding places. They have the ability to read minds and see a person's deepest desires. They also create a poison they use to infect their prey. This will knock the person out, putting them in a hallucinogenic dream state where they think their wish is being granted. During this time the djinn feeds on their blood—slowly. It can take a few days before the victim dies, but it would feel like longer than that in the dream world.

There are lots of references to the djinn in the Qu'ran and Arab folklore. They're believed to occupy a parallel world to mankind. It's said that they were created by Allah in a smokeless fire.

Practical : Defense of Djinn

If you encounter a djinn the most important thing is not letting them touch you. That's how you get infected and once you're trapped in your own fantasy the chance of breaking out of that is pretty low. During the infection their eyes and hands can glow.

You can break their hold over a person by killing the djinn with a silver knife dipped in lamb's blood.

Case Study : Joliet, IL

We came across one in Joliet, Illinois. Some girls had gone missing and we were tracking it. Dean found it in an abandon warehouse, but it got the better of him. Before I got there he managed to play out a couple of days in dream reality. He told me later that he was able to break free of it by killing himself in the dream. You just have to be really sure you're in a djinn-fueled dream to do something like that. Anyway, I had the knife on me and the djinn showed up, there was a fight, and we managed to get one of the girls out of there in time.

Questions & Discussion
Okay, I think that's everything, so thoughts? Questions? Anyone want to say be careful what you wish for?

(OOC: Mingle style. Notifs are off so tag Sam during class with questions or catch him before or after. Use your discretion with the links provided. Sam didn't necessarily cover every detail, but feel free to bring more into it, but his canon point is toward the send of season 5, so nothing beyond that. Also, this is backdated to class time.)

No, not a single one actually. Never even heard about this particular version ever before.

Thats the one and if I recall correctly it was a story to teach you to be careful what you wish for.

It's a good lesson. Sometimes you need a good lesson when you're actually in danger of the consequences.

[ But it does make his job that much harder.]

You speak nothing but the truth, but some consequences are worse then others.

Speaking from personal experience?

You could say that yes. [ Like constantly having to bargain and try and hinder the Loa's from taking his mortal soul. But lets not talk about that.]

You don't sound to inexperienced yourself.

Care to elaborate? You seem to have some interesting stories.

I can understand that, mon ami. [Just let him get his old Tarot deck and then we can get us the full story.]
