day 254 - video; 001
[ When Riker appears at last he's circled back round to Sector 2, framed against the hedge maze. There's no distractions, and his introduction is absent of distractions too. At least at first. ]

Good evening. I hope it's not too late in the day to introduce myself, but I didn't wish for anyone to be surprised to spot me around the place. My name is William Riker, and I just arrived with the latest group of people. It's nice to meet all of you, if unfortunate considering the circumstances. I appreciate the kindness that has been shown to me since my arrival.

I understand some-- [ And suddenly Riker stops, looking up. It's started to rain, and he wipes a single raindrop off his nose. ] I'd better wrap this up. I'd like to speak to some friends of mine, whom I'm reliably informed have been here for a while. Maybe after I get in out of the rain, if that's perfectly alright.

Deanna, I hope you're in somewhere dry.

[ Naturally, the request gets a response from Data. Dutiful and attentive, he gives a small nod as the feed activates. ]

Commander. I spoke with the Counselor earlier in the day; she had mentioned that you were present as well.

[ There is a momentary pause, a slight tilt of his head. ]

It is good to see you, sir.

[ There's the briefest flicker of something like surprise - just the briefest - but it quickly passes. Riker has been preparing himself for this ever since he'd seen Deanna, and now here they were. He gathered himself quickly, and allows himself to break into a wide, friendly smile. This is Data, his friend, an no matter what happens in the future that hasn't changed. It's been no time at all since he's lost him; it's easy to accept him back. ]

It's good to see you too, Data. Deanna told me how much she was looking forward to seeing you, I'm glad you two caught up.

There was another young woman asking after you. Real pretty. Sweet disposition. [ Borg. ] Seven of Nine?

[ Flickers, however brief, do not escape the constant unwavering attention of an android - and Riker's inspires just a sliver of a moment of pause, a furrowed brow - of course, with Data, that's enough to be notable. There are a number of possibilities that may explain it, and it does bear a great deal of similarity to the surprise the Captain initially displayed at his presence. Fortunately, Data knows far better than to inquire regarding the future.

To the other question, though - the manner of Seven. Annika. To the inquiry, he simply gives a small nod. ]

Yes, sir; I had the opportunity to meet with her earlier as well. She had been previously present in the facility, initially arriving on what our captors refer to as Day 184, the same day on which the Captain and I arrived. We had the opportunity to become... acquainted before her departure, which occurred either late on day 242 or early on day 243.

[ The hardest thing is inevitably going to be keeping his marriage secret. How they expect to do that is debatable; after all, in Data's case, he probably has measure of the exact amount of time Riker and Deanna maintain eye contact for any period of time--things like that. His flicker will be just the first in a string of inconsistencies, and that makes this a real handle with care situation.

Like most of this dome was.

Wait. What was that?
]

Acquainted, Data?

[ And this is a subject which will clearly come up, with her return. He's not inclined to hide anything, but given Seven's unique nature and the fact that Riker - and Troi, of course - have clearly not had the opportunity to get to know her as an individual yet, apprehension may be apparent. At the same time, he would not expect any of the Enterprise crew to dismiss her based on what she is alone.

So he gives a small nod, and proceeds. ]

During her initial stay in the facility, we were - [ just a minor tick of his head ] - pursuing a romantic relationship.

[ He can't say he's entirely sure what to think about it; whether he should be pleased or concerned. Data won't be compromised by her, he knows, but even if he is, with the lessons they've learned in the past, with Lore and Dr. Seung, with the Borg Queen, both from Data's perspective and Will's own, he doubts any easy mistakes will be made as a result of their overlooking the dangers.

And he'd...liked Seven. She was articulate, pleasant, respectful--maybe a little too Borg, but he could get over it, at least on the surface.

Riker didn't like himself for judging her by her demeanor and outward appearances. He wasn't that kind of man, really and truly desired not to be, but war and death and loss had hardened him, and mending those bridges was a personal challenge he meant to overcome, needed to overcome. He'd been the first Starfleet officer to serve on a Klingon ship, challenged himself just like this before, and he meant to do so again.

Human xenophobia against those returned from the Collective, as it was with holograms, Cardassians, Romulans -as it still was in many places even for Data - was a deplorable quality in any Starfleet officer. But more importantly, it was a quality he found deplorable in himself.
]

I know that it's a gentleman's prerogative never to kiss and tell, but would you mind...I mean, can I ask how that's going? [ He doesn't want to say 'as your commanding officer', he'd much rather know as a friend. ]

[ He pauses to consider this; it's a difficult question. He and Annika are both new to this type of relationship, and he finds that it is difficult to objectively measure the success of such an undertaking. They were also just separated - for twelve days on his part, but for far more on hers. There is, of course, an added aspect of uncertainty as a result. ]

No, sir; I do not mind. However, given her recent absence, I cannot be entirely certain as to how our relationship will be affected going forward. Prior to her departure, I believed that it was 'going' well, though I have had difficulty quantifying a means by which to measure the success of such an undertaking. Given the issues she is facing surrounding her return, I believe it would be best to allow her to readjust to her surroundings prior to any discussion on the status of our relationship.

[ He pauses, as there is an emotional component now, responses he must process and consider. It seems relevant. ]

However... I find that I am both pleased to see her again, as I had not expected her to be returned, as well as concerned for her wellbeing.
