day 254 - video; 001
[ When Riker appears at last he's circled back round to Sector 2, framed against the hedge maze. There's no distractions, and his introduction is absent of distractions too. At least at first. ]

Good evening. I hope it's not too late in the day to introduce myself, but I didn't wish for anyone to be surprised to spot me around the place. My name is William Riker, and I just arrived with the latest group of people. It's nice to meet all of you, if unfortunate considering the circumstances. I appreciate the kindness that has been shown to me since my arrival.

I understand some-- [ And suddenly Riker stops, looking up. It's started to rain, and he wipes a single raindrop off his nose. ] I'd better wrap this up. I'd like to speak to some friends of mine, whom I'm reliably informed have been here for a while. Maybe after I get in out of the rain, if that's perfectly alright.

Deanna, I hope you're in somewhere dry.

[ At least he remembered showers had water... ]

We'll try not to disturb anyone.

Have you been here long?

[He only needs a moment's pause to update the math for today.] 180 days. [It's not until he says it that he realizes how that breaks down.] So, six months. [Half a year of prison. It's not the longest stretch of the prisoners here, but it's not a short one either.] We use days a lot here since they don't exactly tell us what day of the week or season it's supposed to be.

[ He chooses not to say out loud that it's almost half a year, and then Sam says it himself, and Riker grimaces. ]

A long time to be trapped in a place like this. Have you seen a lot of people come and go? [ He knows they can go, he's spoken to Seven. ]

[His brother, his angel, a hand full of demons, another of the special children, Death, Bella—however you want to define her, and plenty of people he's only met here.] You could say that. [He also tries to keep track of them as best he can. There's a Marina-centric journal with notes on everyone he's managed to talk to or listen to on the network. There will be a few more entries today.]

New arrivals come in every few days. Leaving is a little more sporadic.

There's no warning, no explanation? People just vanish?

[ And then sometimes return. But where do they go in the meantime? Riker's mind automatically goes to the worst places, on account of his own personal experiences. ]

Pretty much. One minute everything's normal and the next thing you know you're expecting to see them somewhere or trying to call them on the network and they just never answer. You can check with the wardens to be sure when that happens. They'll say the person is "lost in the dimensional stabilizer." [He repeats that as if he's heard the wording a few times.]

"Lost in the dimensional stabilizer". That sounds cheerful.

[ It reminded him of a transporter accident. There wasn't anything to be done. From one moment to the next they simply vanished, and there was as much of a farewell to be said then as there apparently was here. ]

The wardens--do you speak with them often?

I listen to their announcements, but I don't engage too much. They aren't usually very helpful. You either get the run around or sarcasm.

Mm. Not the kind of character you'd expect to be running a penal facility, but I have to say it doesn't surprise me. They'd have to be quite powerful to be capable of doing all this, and that kind of thing tends to go hand in hand with a distorted sense of justice.

[ One name comes to mind, but he's by no means the only example. ]

It's distorted alright. I'm not sure the AIs are really in charge though. In the last facility there were engineers who created the AIs too.

The last facility. There was another version of all this?

You could say that. It was pretty close to this one, but the layout is a little different and we have our own version of the land of the lost now.

It was... You know? Never mind. Um, it's a place with dinosaurs and inmates who look more like animals in a lot of cases. The terrain is a lot tougher in there too.

And it's here, inside the dome?

[ He hasn't come across any dinosaurs yet, but now he's starting to get nervous for his wife. ]

Yeah. Sector 6. I wouldn't advise going in there though. We can get in but they usually can't get out. [Yes, usually.]

Thank you for the advice. I have to agree with you, it doesn't seem like a good idea, unarmed or otherwise.

No problem. There are warnings up around the sector just in case too.

I'm Sam Winchester by the way.

Do you prefer Mr. Winchester or just Sam?

[He smiles, not quite laughing, but clearly amused.] Sam is fine. [He only gets called "Mr." when it's followed by one of the fake names he gives out when he's impersonating something else like an FBI agent.]

We're not too formal in prison.
