|[ EDUCATIONAL FACILITY: ROOM 5 ]|

[The truth is Rudy really doesn't know the first thing about teaching, and he doesn't particularly care to figure it out; but this is a good excuse to set up a studio and get some brownie points with the powers that be. He's got to keep busy, after all.

He's in the studio early, setting up a few simple tableaux of items for his 'students' to draw or paint-- the ubiquitous bowl of fruit; a collection of random, mismatched glassware; a tumbled pile of loose fabric, draped over a wooden box; a bouquet of cut flowers laid on their sides.

As for himself, he's got a large pad of paper off to the side of the room, and by the time the class officially starts, he's already sketching vague charcoal lines.

Now it's a matter of seeing whether anyone shows up.]

|[ooc; backdated to early this dayweek~ this will be a bit more of a mingle, please feel free to bounce around in threads and do whatever! I will get around as much as I can and hopefully class on 258 will have a bit more substance.]|

[She had agreed to attending art class, but that was before her brother left the dome. He was the very last person from their world to still be here with her. Today, she found her very last roommate had disappeared as well. She tried calling Tear several times, but she hasn't asked the wardens yet. If she doesn't confirm it then maybe it's not true. Maybe she won't be going back to a large and empty apartment alone with her thoughts.

She briefly considered not going to class, but she wanted to be with people. She wanted to be distracted. Maybe this was a solution and not a problem.

She's drawn to the colorfulness of the paints, so while she feels like it may be too advanced for her she still attempts them as she seeks inspiration in the bouquet.]

[If its a distraction she's looking for, she's got one. Phanan is standing at a nearby easel shooting paint at it. No, really, he's standing a few feet back squeezing tubes of paint and trying to hit it. He's had moderately good accuracy so far and a pretty high messiness ratio so all in all he considers his piece of art a success.]

[It doesn't take too long before his "unique" approach gets her attention. She watches for a few long moments before she realizes she's staring.] That's such an interesting technique.

[Phanan grins at her. There are multicolored spots of paint splattered across his face.] You're an incredibly tactful person. Most people would have substituted 'interesting' with 'stop getting paint on the floor'.

You don't think it needs a little more paint? [The canvas is soaked in paint at this point. There are blobs of it dripping slowly down onto the floor.]

[He's very impressed by the diplomacy.] Tempting as it is to over do things you're probably right. I'll just add a finishing touch. [He aims the tub of paint he's holding and gives it a squeeze. This one must have a clog in it thought because the paint sprays out sideways in all directions, splattering him with bright blue and even flying towards her unless she's far enough away to avoid it. Oops.]

[Between his preoccupation with his own work and the fact that he's not really much of a teacher, Rudy leaves his students to their own devices for a while, letting everyone set up and get started at their own pace.

Eventually, though, he does set his piece aside, wipe his hands off, and go to make the rounds.]

[Sarah had found way more art supplies than was strictly necessary. Today she arrived with a pad of paper, pencils, and charcoal. Sarah was more of a reader and actor, but this seemed interesting. Definitely something for her to try.

Granted, she wasn't extremely happy with her results so far. Her fruit was looking particularly blobbish and the flowers were a smeared mess. The smears were just confined to the paper either. Her face had various streaks of charcoal across her forehead and by her temples as she kept bushing her hair out of the way. Perhaps she'd tie her hair back next time...]

Maybe I should have tried pencil or something else first. I'm just making a mess.

Sometimes making a mess is half the fun.

[He takes a moment to consider the work more closely, standing back from it.]

Pencil is easier to change if you're not happy with it, but I think you should go with whatever speaks to you.

[Wow, since when do kids not like messes? He doesn't laugh at her, though.]

Don't get so caught up on the items. Look at their relationships first, the way they interact. If you start with the details, you have to figure out a way to cram them together. Start with the broad shapes and fill them in from there.

[Sarah looked from the flowers to her page again and finally tore it off the pad, electing to try anew.]

So the vase then. You're saying get the basic outline figured out first and then go from there? Lots of generic shapes that get more and more defined.

Right. Look at the big curves, the angles of the stems-- don't worry about the petals or the patterns on the vase yet. Break it down. Circles, lines. What shapes form between the stems.

[Klara had been interested when she heard of the new art class starting. Art was one of the few things she could enjoy for so many years that it was a comfort to her. Just like making wind chimes. So she came to the class as prepared as she thought she should be, two drawing pads, pens, pencils, charcoal, and a small container of chalk. She is short but still keeps to the back of the classroom. It's a habit now, looking for ways to avoid drawing attention.

The fact the teacher provided supplies for them makes her feel somewhat embarrassed. She didn't need to bring all of this in the first place.]

[Staying in the back is less effective in a small group. Besides, he wouldn't be doing his duty (probably) if he didn't make an effort to check in with everyone.

Rudy gives her a small smile as he approaches.]
