DAY 254 ✯ OPEN VIDEO.
[ you. what are you doing here? ]

Hiding, like you. [ except— wait. no. this isn't right. this was familiar, almost tangible as if it were a collection of memory engrams locked away behind a series of unbreakable, undetectable algorithms that had begun to break free of their restraints. she knew this place, but it wasn't right. this— was not right at all. she didn't belong here. it wasn't her fault. that which she stood accused of wasn't her fault. an individual should not have to answer for the collective's wrongdoings.

she went away, like some do — she understood that much. or maybe she was still on the equinox. perhaps she was hallucinating. firm, unwavering in her stance, she'd been willing to perish instead of becoming what ransom and his crew had become. she wanted no part in any of it. she resisted. but he was trying to force her hand, made the doctor—

standing up, only dimly aware of the headset, of the feed, seven draws her hand across her temple and the metallic, ocular implant that's a stark contrast against pale skin and loose, bright blonde hair. she's intact, and an awkward, uncharacteristic clearing of her throat tells her that her auditory processor is operating under normal parameters. her voice is her own, controlled by her own will and not that of a hologram devoid of ethical subroutines.

only then, when she's certain that speaking will produce words and not song, does she address the dome directly. ]

My designation is Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01. I will not comply.

[ trust is overwhelming in this moment, a powerful override in the face of all the uncertainty she's experienced, both here in the dome and on the equinox prior to being readmitted to the facility. she couldn't trust this place, couldn't trust her conflicting memories, couldn't trust commander riker (who looked at her as if she were a piece of lethal machinery), couldn't trust the doctor, refused to trust ransom — but data, she could.

she doesn't know it is, just that it is. and for once, she doesn't question it. (gut feeling, is that what the captain called it? instinct. sometimes you just know in spite of not knowing why.) ]

I fear my cortical array may be malfunctioning.

[ That inspires no further relief, and he's more than ready to move into action - he is, in fact doing it, evidenced by the apparent movement in his video as he responds. The sense of purpose does not completely override the intensifying worry his emotion chip provides. ]

What is your current location? Do you recall where we have established our laboratory in the facility?

I believe so.

[ there's the question of whether he wants to meet up with her there, but it goes unasked. seven's feet are already carrying her in the direction of said labs, as if drawn there by some invisible force. ]

I am on my way there, if you believe you will be able to locate it without difficulty.

[ The answer has his own unasked question, of whether he should go to the lab or find her first. Either way, he's certainly not going to sit still. ]

[ seven doesn't run. it's not in her nature to, unless urgency demands it. such urgency usually involves life threatening situations, not the desire to meet up with someone as quickly as possible. but the urgency is there and undeniable, and she rushes through the majority of the park to the point that when she arrives at the computer lab, she's flushed and breathless. ]

Commander? [ had she arrived first? she uses his rank and not his name on the off chance that they're not alone. ]

[ Data has gotten there swiftly enough, likewise not running but moving in his efficient manner toward the location. He is only a moment behind her - just enough to hear her call out before he enters himself, relieved to see that she has made her way there. ]

I am here.

[ it is unlike her to hug, but seven knows — is coming to realize — that such is not as untrue as it might have been back on voyager. she wouldn't hug there, for it wasn't in her nature to in that setting. life aboard a military vessel had not introduced her to more relaxed social behaviors of humans as much as the doctor's lessons hoped to. it was time here in marinanova that made the action something that was like her, especially where this particular individual was concerned.

because seven does hug him, whirling back around towards the entrance and move swiftly towards it do just that. tactile contact dismisses any and all previous notions of this being a hallucination, a side effect of her cortical array malfunctioning in the wake of the doctor attempting to remove it from her skull. these experiences were real — are real. data is real, and so is she. ]

I do not wish to go back.

[ going back means back to the equinox, if not lost to the dimensional stabilizer. back to the uncertainty of her survival, her resistance quite possibly her own undoing. ]

[ There is an interesting emotional aspect to this gesture; in general, the importance placed on tactile contact is one of the aspects of humanity that has eluded him. But not so with individuals for whom he cares - this is an expression of fondness and affection that he has understood since before he was capable of experiencing those in an emotional sense.

But when Seven hugs him, there is that sense of emotional fondness, of a connection, and additionally a sensation of relief and comfort, an ultimately pleasant combination of emotions. He had truly not anticipated her return, and having her here, being able to return her embrace, holds a unexpected quality that makes the emotional response all the more potent. ]

To where do you not wish to return? Were you sent back to Voyager?

[ seven draws back after a moment, her hands slipping down data's arms to grasp at his own. she's never been a tactile person, favoring the space her personal bubble granted her, but it's different with data. she enjoys the sensation of touch when it comes to touching him. and right now, the tactile contact grounds her, helps her say what she needs to. it was somehow easier to address with commander riker, where telling him what had occurred felt more like reporting to captain janeway than anything else — business instead of a personal matter. but it becomes one when she shakes her head, indicating that she did not mean voyager. ]

I was not on Voyager last. I was on the Equinox, another Starfleet vessel that found themselves lost in the Delta Quadrant. The Equinox's captain is corrupt, actively seeing to the torture and slaughter of a sentient species for personal gain. I disabled the ship's relays and encrypted them in order to prevent Ransom from harming any more of the entities. They were unable to decode the sequence. I refused to surrender it.

[ and he had the doctor attempting to extract it. seven's last memories of the equinox are of a darling clementine. ]

[ He furrows his brow in quite apparent concern, his fingers closing over hers. Her actions, certainly, are no issue - but if the captain was corrupt, if he was willing to torture and slaughter sentient life forms, then it is not difficult to speculate an adverse reaction. ]

That is a course of action which I find to be most admirable, though I do not imagine it is one to which the captain reacted particularly well.

[ It's a difficult emotional state to process; concern, intense displeasure mixed with anger, uncertainty at what to do since he cannot affect anything for her outside of the facility. He tightens his frown and shakes his head. ]

He did not. Voyager's EMH was with me on board the Equinox. Captain Ransom removed his ethical subroutines and ordered him to... extract the necessary information.

[ she slips a hand free of his, the need to touch her flesh fingers to the metallic rim of her ocular implant necessary once more. it's an irrational reflex, the need to reassure herself of it's presence, but there's a very human part of her that fears she's still ripped at the seams singing songs of clementine and that visions of data are nothing more but a wishful illusion. a way for her subconscious to distract her from the horror of her reality. ]

[ That... is something of a particularly major issue for Data. Tampering with ethical subroutines, manipulating a sentient individual in such a violating manner because their nature makes it possible for one to do so and disregard their worth as more than a tool. It's all the worse that it was done in an effort to act in a likewise egregious manner toward Annika. Anger is certainly taking the edge, paired with mounting concern for her wellbeing. The grasp of his hand that remains on her tightens - he understands this is intended to provide comfort. ]

And he was... attempting to do so, when you were brought back?

[ seven looks down, the redirecting of her gaze answer enough. ]

The Doctor was the one who saw to the removal of the majority of my implants when Captain Janeway liberated me from the Collective. He has intimate knowledge of my cranial infrastructure — enough to extract my cortical array and gain access to the memory engrams indexed within my neural processor. He was... attempting to do so. It is... It is very likely that he will succeed.

[ because the doctor was efficient, because he knew precisely how every inch of her worked, from her ocular implant to her toes, and because the parts of his program that gave him the ability to separate right from wrong had been removed from his base subroutines. it is a grim realization, to know that in all likelihood, she will be reduced to an echo within the hive mind; a body on a ship that serves no purpose aside from the borg technology she's partly comprised of. she would not put it past ransom to salvage her for parts when he's willing to slaughter members of a sentient race. ]

[ He does catch the meaning therein, and frowns. The answer only worsens the responses he processes from his chip, and it is difficult to press through them to find a way to respond. ]

There have been numerous occasions upon which my death, the deaths of my crewmates, the destruction of my ship, or a combination of these outcomes was highly likely, and the odds of avoiding such a fate were infinitesimal. I am certain that you and Voyager's crew have likely been through similarly dire situations as well. While that does not mean that we can assume that we will escape any situation which is presented to us, it is compelling reason to remember that improbability is not tantamount to impossibility. You have already defied considerable odds merely by becoming the person you are. You may yet find that you continue to do so.

[ He's not certain if any of this is comforting or not, but they are observations that he considers accurate, and there is little else he can do but to offer them. ]

[ it isn't comforting, but being the presence of someone she trusts whose ethical subroutines have not been removed is. but she also feels startlingly more... fragile while in close proximity to someone she cares about deeply — she remembers that, is certain of that. putting on a brave face, so to speak, and speaking with commander riker and captain picard about the atrocities committed by ransom and the crew of the equinox was easy, practically second nature. her own well being hadn't mattered when ensuring that the wrongdoings of those people was documented, reported to those above her, that someone with the proper authority was made aware. but now it did. very much so. and she found herself questioning the status of her fate, and being frightened by the prospect of the termination of her existence.

seven was about as equipped to deal with this as she had what the borg queen had dragged her through months earlier. ]

I suppose so. [ it's halfhearted at best, but seven is willing to look on the bright side. it was the human thing to do, after all.

abruptly, she changes the topic. (another very human thing to do.) ]
Had I been able to remember my time here, I would have missed you, Data.

[ He frowns, somewhat, recognizing that he cannot provide adequate comfort for such a situation - it is difficult, particularly when calculating dire odds is not only instantaneous and simple but also your automatic reflex to any given situation. He is also unable to affect her situation, stuck either here or, as this had been unfolding, presumably in the wrong quadrant of the galaxy and oblivious to her situation - or even of the fact that he cares for her as he does.

But he manages a weak smile in response to her topic change. ]

And I have missed you... markedly so.
