Day 253 [Video/Action | Open]
Citizens of Marina, I have a serious question for you.

Who would win in a fight? [She holds her adorned hands up one at a time.] Lobster claw oven mitt or shark oven mitt?

I know the shark seems obvious, but the lobster wants it more. Also, I think the wardens might have been drinking when they stocked the store. So, let me know if you're aware of a good AA program for AIs.

[Kitty will be milling around Bull's Eye if you'd like to find her there or on her way home.]

Granted, but the shark would have to have an extremely powerful bite just to penetrate the outer shell of the claw. Whereas, if the lobster grabs hold of the shark at all, it could rip off quite a bit and leave the shark very badly injured.

[ this is kind of hilarious to her and just the amusement she needs. ]

True. I'm betting the shark has speed on his side. [Is she really breaking this down? But really, she needed something more playful today too.]

Most of them do. It would depend entirely on the species of lobster and shark we're dealing with. Some sharks are more capable of dealing with their bottom-dwelling lobster friends, but some lobsters are certainly capable of taking a shark out for a swim. However, judging by the size and shape of both options currently available, I still think the lobster would win this one.

[ ...getting her started on this was a bad idea. now she won't stop. ]

[Okay, that ramble was worthy of a certain guy she's with although she used less Latin in the description.] Are you secretly a marine biologist?

[ oh if she gets going enough to mention specific species of lobster and shark, especially the abnormal ones, there will be plenty of latin. she is fluent, after all. ]

I have a decided interest in science, particularly biology. My fields of study are teratology, cryptozoology, and xeno-biology. You could say I like the unusual.

[Kitty is a smart girl—a genius even—but she didn't get through too much formal education before all the mass genocides shut down the educational system. She was also more geared toward technology than science, though she had an interest in physics, so while she's good with languages and can pick apart what those words might mean she's still not familiar with them.] Is one of those a field of science devoted to making up fields of science?

Not at all, I assure you. If you're interested and have the time, I'd be more than happy to explain further.

It might cut into my very important looking at weird stuff in the store time I had scheduled, but call me curious. [She is nicknamed for a curious creature after all.]

Teratology: from the Greek word teratos, meaning 'deformed,' 'ugly,' or even 'monster.' Thus, it is roughly known as the study of abnormalities in physiological development. Cryptozoology: from the Greek kryptos, meaning 'hidden.' Thus, the study of hidden animals. [ don't get her started on nessie or bigfoot. ] And finally, xeno-biology: from the Greek xenos, meaning 'stranger' or 'guest.' Thus, the study of biology that is not quite normal or familiar, sometimes known as 'biology based on foreign chemistry.'

I hope that helps your curiosity. [ because she's interested to see how much of that kitty's interested in. ]

[The girl likes learning.] What's a hidden animal? Like deep sea fish? You know, for people not living in underwater domes. [Does this count as getting her started?]

Mostly those creatures whose existence cannot yet be proven. Though, I can tell you that Sasquatches and merfolk are entirely real. Quite good friends, once you get to know them.

[ yes, yes it does. ]

Wouldn't surprise me, though back home they'd probably be considered mutants.

Longevity. Extended life.

Immortal? [Oh, no, the dare not taken. At least not taken yet. She also has some bad experiences with an immortal.]

Not quite. In my world, immortality and simple longevity are two completely different DNA sequences. Meaning, they're similar abilities, but very different.

[ meaning she can still die or be killed. and she's far from the type to go around trying to kill anyone else unless she has to. ]

We have as many Abnormal species as we do "normal" ones, but each one is unique. Some need protection from humans, while others have to be separated from humans for the safety and security of both species. Humans aren't yet ready for the world of Abnormals, so no. Most slide completely under the radar and end up on my doorstep.

[ guess what she does for a living. ]

Let's just say I run something called a Sanctuary and its name was not arbitrarily given. We help and protect those who need it.

[ abnormals, specifically. ]

[Kitty nods, letting that sink in.] Sounds something like my world—years ago. [Before mutants were public knowledge. Before they were the hunters.]

Then you can understand the need for something like that. I would offer the same here, but I haven't seen the same need as I did in my world. Should that change, I would be more than willing to start something.

[ she remembers conversations with oz and vaguely misses his presence, too. he had been interesting to her, familiar. ]

This place is very different than anything I've seen before. Even people who aren't used to others with different abilities seem curious instead of afraid. [She doesn't always know how to react to that. She's defined her life around being a mutant—hated and feared by humans even though she works to protect them. It's jarring to have that changed so completely. Nice...but jarring. There's almost a loss of identity in it like everything she went through before doesn't matter now.]

[ helen understands. it's like her work with the sanctuary. not needing it here is strange to her, like she's missing part of her life or her self. she's had to focus on other things to fill the gap and it's still not enough, never will be quite the same. ]

And yet there will always be a few who are afraid. All we can do is try to help them adjust. [ she hasn't personally met anyone who is afraid rather than curious, but she's lived long enough to know better than to expect everyone to cooperate. ]
