So, barring further unfortunate invasions of prehistoric beasts or other disasters, I’m happy to announce I’ll be starting an art class tomorrow. Short notice, I know, but don’t worry if you can’t clear your schedule; latecomers will be more than welcome. This isn’t going to be too formal, anyway. Days ending in fours and eights, starting at nine in the morning sharp... but I’ll keep the studio open through the afternoon, unless someone kicks us out. Classroom five. All skill levels and media are welcome-- I’ll set up a still life or something, unless any adventurous souls want to talk about modeling.

Questions, comments? I’m not going to do sign-ups-- just show up if you’re interested, and bring along some appropriate supplies. Paints, clay, anything you like. At the very least a pencil and pad will get you a long way.

|[ooc; official course info here. Will post a mingle-type thing for it next week <3]|

[The casual act isn't bad at all. Really. Brian is likelier than most to critique Dexter's facade of normalcy-- he knows it is one, for starters-- but that's a well done approach. Still, in spite of Brian's best efforts to form what passes for a genuine friendship, Dex really isn't the chatty type. If he wants to talk, it means he wants to know something.

It's all right, though. Brian's casual act isn't an act. He could guess what the younger man's after, but it doesn't worry him; he still has the truth on his side, a trump card that would spoil the game but ought to keep him safe enough.]

Seemed like a good way to pass the time. Besides, they say it's worth a few brownie points with the powers that be, [he says, shrugging slightly as he turns to face Dexter.] Interested in attending?

[ Dexter's brows arch at that, skeptical. He purses his lips. ]

I can't say I've ever been much of an artist.

[ He can pursue this line of casual conversation for a time, allow some normalcy until he's ready to pursue his purpose. Make his agenda less immediately apparent. ]

[There's a brief, slight flash of a smile at that. Your crayon drawings were more than fridge worthy, Dexter; and if he's honest, Brian likes your recent work just fine.

Pity that it ends up in such a difficult location for easy viewing.]

Never know until you try it.

[ There's such a different approach to their work, despite the similarities, the intertwined origins. Aesthetics are never Dexter's goal, it's pragmatic and necessary. Efficient. Neat.

The crayon drawings - the ones he can remember - were only part of a childhood that he was acting out, the same as any other stage in his life. Normal. Expected. The ones Brian is thinking of are lost to him, along with that boy who unnerves him so. ]

I have reasonably strong hypotheses.

[ Artists allegedly have passion, a core desire to let their true selves out and express their innermost desires... but letting my true self out is best done in a different setting. I have nothing to express that can be captured in paint or pastel. ]

[Even neatness is an aesthetic. A particular kind of monstrosity. A moment recaptured, pinned out into a ritual. It's more than easy disposal that makes Dexter cut them up; just like it's more not simply the plasticized charm of cold, bloodless flesh that shapes Brian's pieces.

But neither of them can do their best work, here. He won't question that.]

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to test hypotheses, though, [he points out, ever easy, punctuating it with the arch of an eyebrow. He's not terribly bothered. This isn't the high-stakes game they had going at home.] But it's not a big deal. Like I said, just trying to keep busy, you know?

[ He gives a small nod, rolling along with an easy shrug. ]

There is that old saying about idle hands.

[ Not that they make particularly good playthings for my Dark Passenger here. ]

Not that I necessarily mind a few days of relative mundanity at the moment.

[ Adjusting his angle for that strategic approach. ]

[He'd make a crack about having half a dozen idle hands in his office, but possibly dismemberment jokes-- no matter how professionally apt-- would be tipping his not-the-least-bit-idle hand in this conversation.]

Tell me about it, [he agrees, with a momentary grim look, as though the subtext of that segue has gone over his head. Just two guys chatting, nothing to see here but perfectly reasonable relief.] I'll never complain about spiked brownies again.

[ Possibly they might also set Dexter into another round of inexplicable trauma. Probably not, at this point, but who ever knows.

He gives a sideways tilt of his head, one brow rising. ]

It's one way to get perspective.

You handled yourself all right, though.

That it is.

[ Adrenaline can drive one to necessary action, but it doesn't generally just bestow that kind of precision. ]

Seemed like you knew what you were doing.

Desperate times.

[He shrugs his shoulders very slightly, not breaking eye contact. And then, a moment of softening, a wry little twist of his lip.]

And a lot of anatomy classes. I figured if something covered in scaly armor is trying to eat me, going for the soft parts is probably a good bet, right? You didn't do too badly, either.

Anatomical knowledge paired with some decent self-defense training. Field work can be more dangerous than you expect. Can't always rely on the uniforms.

[ He gives an easy shrug back, himself. ]

Lucky for us.

[ There's a short snort of a laugh. ]

She'd probably say the same - well. "Fucking" uniforms, probably.

Though it's less derision than it is a personal preference for being prepared.

No, I get it. It's not a bad idea, knowing how to take care of yourself.

[There's a casualness to it, a way of agreeing without exactly agreeing. Normal people study self-defense too. It's a fine line, treading between I'm just like you and I'm just like everyone else.]

Write enough blood spatter reports and it seems like a good idea for anyone.

[ Certainly it's normal - easier to explain than most, but there's still something about the way Rudy approached it that Dexter can't quite let go of. Maybe the faintest hint of something familiar? But he was too detached then to have as much insight as he's generally accustomed to. In truth, the raptors were the least of it. ]

I almost prefer rampaging dinosaurs to paperwork. Almost.

[Another small, wry twitch of his lip. And then, as if he's just thought of it-- as if it hasn't been sitting in the back of his mind since then--]

Which reminds me, are you holding up okay? You seemed pretty shaken up when I found you.

[Muttering about blood and all that. Which one of you is the weird one, again?]

Yeah. Fine.

[ The answer is too fast and he knows it, so he lets himself pause, giving a small shrug. ]

I just had a run-in with it. Vapor - that's what it was called, apparently.

[ That's seriously a problem with this guy. ]

It was like those patches - the irrational fear? It was more potent, and paired with hallucinations.

[ Hallucinations, but based on what? That boy in the blood... I wasn't hoping to see him again. ]

Hmn.

[ He draws in a deliberate, slow breath. ]

Hard to tell how much of it was the blood and how much of it was the effect...

[ He shakes his head. ]

It was a lot of blood, but blood has never done that to me.

[ Nothing's done that to me. What scares the monsters? ]

I can imagine, otherwise you'd probably find a different job.

[The tone says joke, but he doesn't smile.]

Where'd all the blood come from?
