[ Charlotte is looking slightly worse for wear this fine day, part of her head covered in a bandage and eyes lacking the luster of a good nights sleep. She's contemplative, idly picking at the remnants of a pie on her plate (pear and gruyere, what else?). ]

You know, I was thinking... this is the first time I live on my own. I went from living with my dad to living with my aunts and then Ned. I've never really been on my own like this before... and that was fine, until yesterday. Not that yesterday was as bad as it could've been of course, but it still brings you pause.

How many of us live alone here? It seems like it'd be nice to have a roommate, someone who'll notice if you get eaten by a dinosaur or disappear or... you know. Lots of stuff could happen.

I'm sorry, I'm not that kind of girl. I don't even know your name, good sir. [ We're turning this car around to harmless flirting, so help me. ] Maybe if you buy me dinner first.

[That's weird. People don't flirt with him. Not for a long time. But its not serious so no change there.] Ton Phanan; pilot, wit and superior intellect.

[ Mostly so because she's taken, good sir. If things had been different, it may have been slightly more serious than it is. ]

Charlotte Charles. I make pies and investigate murder most foul. Among other things.

Actually that sounds fun. Do you do them at the same time?

Sometimes, yes! You'd be surprised how often those two coincide. Not that we're murdering anyone at the Pie Hole, of course.

The Pie Hole. It's the name of the place I work at. As in, shut your though the pies are so good that you'll probably want to open it instead.

I don't think we have that phrase where I come from, so I'll try to appropriate it but use it wrongly as often as I can. What's the best murder you've ever investigated?

I don't know if you can call murders best. That's like saying "what was your best time having the flu". It doesn't really work, you know? [ But she does give it some thought. ]

There was a ghost rider once. That was pretty exciting.

True, but I do have a soft spot for a gruesome story. What happened with your ghost?

Turns out he wasn't a ghost at all. Just the mother of a professional jockey that was trampled to death, only he actually didn't die but instead had his horse's bones grafted onto his own so he could walk again.

He was really nice, actually. A bit shy, but I guess that's what happens when you live in a basement for so long.

[That's a blow that hits unexpectedly close to home, but he doesn't even bat and eye. He's got opinions on people using extremes to keep themselves alive. If they'd given him a choice he would have said no.]

I'm more disappointed by the lack of real ghosts in this story than anything else.

I'm sorry. I guess real life is just like that cartoon... it's always some guy in a bedsheet.

Oh, I know that. I'm usually the one under the sheet.

Should I interpret that as you being a fan of Halloween or a crook?

Commando, actually. It even goes with the name; wraiths are something scary under the bed. Also occasionally a crook. The military is in fact allowing us to pretend to be pirates and rob people at the moment, so that's fun.

Oh, so you're a... a privateer? Or is it buccaneer... I can never keep those two apart.

I'm not sure the distinction really matters in this case. We're trying to infiltrate an Imperial warlord who has been known to hire pirates so that's exciting. We robbed a bank the other day.

Yes, I'm sure the holofilm adaptation will be thrilling. How they'll did someone handsome enough to portray me I don't know.

Maybe you'll just have to play the part yourself. To make sure they do it right.

Holostar? Lots of shrieking teenage girls? Incidentally my best friend? You don't have him where you're from? [He looks so amused by the fact that Face isn't famous somewhere. He's going to be insufferable about it when he gets home.]

Nope. I can honestly say that I've never heard of him before in my life. Especially not when I was a shrieking teenage girl... not that I did a whole lot of shrieking.
