day 243 :: backdated :: closed
It had been a simple plan, but a plan that worked quite well as Locutus, while seemingly malfunctioning, still thought himself superior to the ones offering to assist him. The other Borg within the dome having left, a hole inside of him once again void of the Collective, even a stunted Collective. They had lured him with the human doctor, offering the alcove of the former Drone designation Seven of Nine in assistance in repairing him. If there was anything he knew of the humans, they would not bring more harm to this body as they were primarily sentimental creatures. And mostly, it was the use of the Borg tech that had made the decision for him.

Once there, he had slipped easily into the alcove, trusting the Starfleet officers and the human woman to use the tech as it was intended, rather than to somehow use it against him. But as he felt that other consciousness begin to gain in strength and seep through the cracks, he began to struggle, had to be restrained until everything seemed to go black and he felt the steady arms of the android and the blind malfunctioning human catch him before he crumbled to the floor.

Jean-Luc was awake, barely lucid at the moment as he felt the shift in consciousness inside his mind. The freedom to roam, so to speak, he fought his way out, tearing at mental walls and clawing at psychological floors to come back. His chest hurt. His mechanical heart that had suddenly failed him, forcing the other tech inside to turn on him. His face hurt where Locutus had clawed at his skin. His mind felt as if it had been turned inside out, dissected and traumatized to the point that he could barely think straight.

But there was some familiarity here as his eyes barely opened, blinking into a light too bright. His eyes, Jean-Luc’s eyes, worried and tired, questioning in a human way rather than the detached way of the Borg. Locutus was not there anymore.

Helen had offered herself up as the lure, bait as it were, and had performed her job to the best of her ability. She'd known she could manage it, had tossed Locutus that poker face she'd mentioned off-hand to Jean-Luc so many days ago. Once they'd gotten him in place, she'd known they would be able to make their plan work simply because none of them were prepared to fail. They were going to get Jean-Luc back no matter what it took.

As for the good doctor, once the procedure got underway, she took a more backseat role, fulfilling her purpose as the doctor and monitoring Jean-Luc's vital signs as best she could in the mess. The clinic didn't have nearly the equipment she would have liked, but it had to do for the moment. And it did. She wanted nothing more than to go to him once he opened his eyes, once he began to gaze around, because she could tell the difference, could see it in the way he held himself and the way his eyes gazed around.

Locutus was gone. She took a deep breath, barely blinking back the tears of relief, the pain she had been fighting for days on end. They had a lot to discuss, but for now that could wait. For now, she had to keep up with her end of this plan. Stepping just a little closer, she examined what little she had to work with.

"His vitals look stable. He should be all right, but he'll need a lot of rest."

Head full of calculations and contingencies, Geordi chances a look up from his monitor when he hears Helen's reassuring assessment. A quick look back at the bleeps flashing across his screen confirms that she's right, and it lets Geordi relax substantially. They're not entirely out of the woods, but the scary part was a success.

"Knowing the Captain, that might be easier said than done, doc." Geordi steps over beside Helen and pats her shoulder. And then, a grateful look toward Lt. Robbins. Both women had been thrust into a complicated situation and come through big time. Geordi isn't surprised in either case, but he is truly glad they were here. "Thanks a lot. We couldn't have done this without your help, both of you."

Then, he looks over at Data and offers a little smile. His friend's lack of emotions during this had been helpful in its way, but a stark reminder of who they'd lost -- and strange, a little. Even after years of knowing Data without his emotion chip, Geordi had quickly gotten used to the more-human version of his best friend. Once the Captain is out of the woods, he hopes they'll get time to talk.

"I guess now we just keep monitoring, make sure we don't need to make any more adjustments to the nanoprobes."

Along with Geordi's expression of gratitude, Data offers a small, respectful nod in the directions of both Helen and Morgan. He meets Geordi's glance in his own direction with a single brow arched and an additional nod of confirmation.

"While we do appear to have been initially successful, it will be necessary to confirm that the nanoprobes continue to perform as expected and maintain an appropriate balance."

Of course he now has the necessary knowledge to know that he would be experiencing cautious but hopeful relief at this point, but the chip has not yet been reactivated. It would have been a distraction during this last phase of executing their plan, and he's still not prepared to handle the rest of the emotions that would be waiting for him. Not to mention that though they're making progress, they're not quite safe just yet.

She nods in return, to both Data and Geordi, though her attention is primarily on the Captain and the various equipment they've been using to monitor him. The fact that he's not the captain of her Enterprise doesn't change her perception of her duty; and as such, in spite of faint misgivings about violating the Temporal Prime Directive, she's entirely focused on the task at hand.

"Is there any likelihood of a recurrence?"

Slowly, oh so slowly, Jean-Luc is sifting through the fog, a haze of memories and inside knowledge of the Collective to work his way fully back into himself. A part of him can't believe that this happened again. A part of him is angry with himself for allowing it to happen, as if he actually had. A part of him just wants to sleep for days as Locutus kept the schedule of a Borg drone rather than a human.

He's tired and hungry. And thirsty. Which is what prompts him to swim up above that sea of familiar voices that are calling to him like sirens to a weary, sea-worn sailor. Yes, even in this state he continues to have the heart of a poet. "Wa-..." He swallows, his throat feeling like sandpaper. "Water."

Helen merely nods to both Data and Geordi, most of her attention still firmly focused on Jean-Luc. "Of course." Because she could have done nothing less than what she had. She cared too much for Jean-Luc to leave him alone with all of this. "I'll see what I can do to keep an eye on him." She might have an easier time than some of the others for certain reasons, but that remains to be seen.

To Lieutenant Robbins, she offers a slight shrug. She's not the one to best answer that question. "At least I know what to listen for this time. I'll be able to catch it far earlier if it does."

Jean-Luc catches her attention again, though, and she glances at him, her expression softening considerably from the hardened look of an experienced doctor in the middle of a crisis. It's clear there's something she's feeling. Thinking she's the best one to head out to fill the captain's request, she moves to do so, finding a cup and filling it with water to bring back. He has to be exhausted and if this is the only thing she can do now, she will do it. Like hell is she leaving him alone now. Calmly, quietly, she moves to Jean-Luc's side and presses the cup into one of his hands, her eyes moving to finally meet his if possible. She wants him to know she's been here, that they all have, and that he's going to be just fine. They all have to believe that.

His first response is to Morgan, a very small sideways tilt of his head. "It is possible, but if the nanoprobes continue to function as intended, I do not believe it is likely."

He then turns his attention to Helen and the Captain, observing closely. What is important now is that the Captain recovers; emotion chip or not, he's never had difficulty recognizing his duty, his loyalty, his friends. In the way he always has, he acts based on those loyalties, on what motivation to preserve those he considered friends had always been ascribed by others as concern.

"Continued monitoring, even beyond the initial period warranted by this procedure, may not be unwise."

"I'd consider it an advisable precaution," she answers quietly, watching the Captain and the doctor. Medicine is not her forte and the technological aspect is, regrettably, somewhat beyond her. A century or so to say the least. Still, she is-- well, pleased seems like a poor word for it, but satisfied to have played some part in this.

The Captain, she suspects, will agree to monitoring. She believes this because she thinks it's the correct course of action, and because she trusts his judgment. Which is a compliment, if not a terribly sentimental one.

He would most definitely agree to monitoring. It did feel as if he'd been raked over the coals, so to speak. Had he understood what had been happening to him in time, he might have taken more initiative to prevent it from happening. Even now, it all seemed a little foggy aside from knowing his heart had been malfunctioning.

Malfunctioning. Just that word left him with a chill running down his spine. Locutus was quite fond of that word. How had this happened?

His fingers curled lightly around the glass offered to him, barely holding onto it and barely holding it steady to the point that he pressed it back into the nearest hand. An unsteady hand was a sign of weakness. And the more Jean-Luc came back into himself, regained his mind, the less he wanted to seam so. It was less about who was in the room and more for himself. Locutus hadn't beaten him.

"Report." He spoke the word quietly. Tiredly. But with just enough gumption to make it a command. It was his eyes that held the question mark that wasn't present in the vocalization as he looks at each person in the room. It was a look that clearly said 'what happened?'.

Helen keeps a grip on the cup so it doesn't spill, quietly pushing it back towards Jean-Luc. He needs the water and if she has to tilt the cup herself so he can drink, she will. For now, she'll leave the reporting business to the rest of them. She's better off handling the medical side.

"Drink, Jean-Luc." Her voice is soft, but very firm. This is clearly a command she is giving him and she won't take no for an answer. Her free hand moves to cup the side of his face, as though to help tilt his head so he can drink as directed. Her touch is gentle, more coaxing than forcing, but it's clear that she isn't going to stand by now that he's back.

Hearing 'report' from the Captain sets Geordi's mind at ease substantially; yep, he's Captain Picard all right, back to... normal might be a bit much to hope for at this early stage, but at least the words 'resistance is futile' weren't anywhere to be heard.

The other feeling the Captain's single word triggers is duty. Unlike Helen, Geordi can't just ignore the Captain's order -- and for that, he's doubly glad Helen is here with them.

"If you remember much of the talk we had just before this happened, Captain, you were right on the money. Your leftover Borg implants where affecting your artificial heart, and regressing your personality back to Locutus. We managed to use Seven's spare nanoprobes to fight the effects."

His tone shifts just the tiniest bit at the end there, mostly imperceptible within his official Starfleet-officer voice unless one knows him particularly well. Seven being gone makes this bittersweet, indeed.

Ever dutiful, Data naturally picks up the report there, his head inclining just a few small degrees to the side as he continues the explanation. Even as Geordis tone shifts at the mention of the nanoprobes, his remain perfectly precise, even and flat.

"There were two deployments of modified nanoprobes, the first to correct the heart's functionality and the second to combat the reassimilation process. By addressing both issues, we were able to ensure that the heart would not again malfunction when the support of the Borg technology was removed."

"Some tissue damage remains, primarily external, but in the absence of the aggressive nanoprobes it should heal normally."

She has less to report, being less familiar with the technology and the situation as a whole; still, duty is duty. She can't not report.

Carefully, he leans in to take the drink cognizant of not moving too entirely much as the others fuss over him. He casts Helen a look that's amazingly a mixture of frustration at having to be helped and a thankful look at being helped.

As each officer reports, snippets of conversation come back to him, his own presumptions, the presumptions of others. He nods, filling in most of the blanks. "Then the Borg tech is shut off and my heart... my heart..." He isn't certain which question he wishes to ask here. Was there a transplant? Is the old heart repaired to full functionality? "There will be no regression?"

Helen is only partially paying attention to what's being said around them, as her world revolves entirely around the man who has so quickly and efficiently stolen her heart. Her thumb brushes across his cheek momentarily after he finishes sipping at the water and for the briefest of moments, her expression belies a vulnerability and gratitude that he's recovered. It's gone very quickly, long before she steps back and further to the side, to offer physical and moral support for Jean-Luc while the others answer his questions.

"Everything is working properly. You've little to worry about now. I would like to keep you under observation for a time, just to be certain." She offers him a small smile. "Doctor's orders."

With a smile, Geordi lifts his hands in a friendly 'I ain't gonna argue with her' pose. Doctors, he has learned, are not to be trifled with when it comes to their orders.

"We'll keep monitoring, of course, but I'm happy with what I'm seeing as far as the probes' output. It seems like we're out of the woods."

Of course, being Geordi he's not about to leave it at that. Contingency plans and emergency supplies are main staples any Starfleet engineer needs in order to be comfortable.

"I'll be asking the wardens for more spare probes as soon as I get enough of those points they dole out. The holodeck construction can wait until we're sure we can handle whatever might come up."

Data gives a nod that goes along with Geordi's hand gesture, and his statement on their current status.

"That would not be unwise. There is a great deal of potential in what we could accomplish through repurposing them. Perhaps we could request additional diagnostic tools, as well."

Because a single, non-medical tricorder only goes so far - and, of course, they won't be getting additional Borg nanoprobes any other way now.

"There is a great deal that can be accomplished through modifying what technology we do have access to, as well, which would enable us to monitor and detect any potential issues more easily. I will focus my efforts on that area."

"If we can create a list, I will assist in requesting whatever equipment might be necessary... although thus far the Wardens have been less than accommodating."

Not that she's tried bargaining, since her first attempt; it grates on her nerves to be out of uniform, but rationally, there are much more important things she could request. As this conversation clearly demonstrates. (She'd still be much happier in uniform. But Morgan is nothing if not patient.)
