day 241 | voice/action
[Arriving at a strange place isn't new to Catherine Halsey. Her life has been full of odd occurrences and this shouldn't be any different. But it is, more mysterious than anything else she's been through. Prison? Again. Not rightfully so; hasn't she served her time? Hasn't she suffered enough, properly atoned without being put in a jumpsuit?]

This isn't the chain gang...

[It's muttered as she fumbles with the device, starting up a voice communication.]

To anyone who is listening: An explanation would be helpful, something more relevant than what I've received, a detailing of events and the essence of this situation. Additionally... [She pauses.] ...if anyone is near gardens and a series of greenhouses, I require physical assistance as well.

[Because newly arrived, stolen away only minutes after her life-saving amputation, she is now stuck in a greenhouse with a rather stubborn door.

At least the view is nice...?]

[And she notes that Helen looks terrible, but she won't ask any questions. From what she's heard, this place isn't a huge drain on people, but perhaps it's different for some.

At least this is relatively simple.]

If you could keep the nature of the injury to yourself, I would appreciate it. I can tell anyone concerned in my own time.

[With no small amount of annoyance, she fumbles with the jumpsuit, eventually managing to somewhat push it to the side, almost off her shoulder.]

I was shot in the shoulder. The beings that rescued me have no great fondness for doctors, and they decided the best way to save my life was to amputate my arm. [...go figure.] I have a complete lack of faith in the work they did.

[ normally it isn't so bad. catherine just so happened to walk in with the worst timing ever, but helen's hoping it won't last long. hoping, praying to whatever exists and will listen that they'll find the solution soon. ]

Absolutely. [ a part of her wants to be able to help, but she also knows stubborn pride when she sees it and that dr. halsey will have to get used to doing things like that herself. so helen takes the time to pull on a pair of latex gloves so she can examine the injury properly. ]

Considering the circumstances, I would hardly fault you for that. [ ugh, the idea of amputation like this is brutal and does not sit well with her. she examines the injury as best she can. without proper equipment, she can't get a very detailed examination, but she trusts herself and her knowledge to get them as far as they will need now. ]

It doesn't look terribly done, but I certainly wouldn't have gone for something so drastic had you been my patient. You shouldn't have any difficulties with it, but just in case, I can take a look at it every few days or so.

[ she seems to come into herself as she plays the role of doctor, momentarily forgetting why she's so upset lately. caught up in the moment. it's the distraction she needed. ]

In my opinion, it was unnecessary for a simple shoulder injury and inexpertly done, but you should be just fine.

[The truth is that even though it's in an awkward place to look at, Catherine still just doesn't want to see it. She's not quite ready, not yet. Better to figure out how to function before dwelling on things.]

I disagree with what they did, I assure you. Until I'm more accustomed to it, if you would take a look at it from time to time, I'd feel more comfortable about the situation.

[Where most people might feel upset, ashamed, perhaps even afraid, Catherine speaks with confidence and even a hint of haughtiness.]

I have no doubt that I'll adjust. It's an annoyance, all the same.

Absolutely. On normal days, I spend most of my time here, but if you arrive and I'm not here, you're welcome to contact me and ask me to meet you.

[ the confidence will either serve her well and genuinely or will hide what she's really feeling towards it and everything that's happened to her. were it helen, the answer would be the latter option, so she automatically assumes that's the reality here. whatever the case, she steps back and nods. ]

You're free to go now. I see no reason to hold you back, unless there's anything else I can do for you while you're here.

[At least she knows she's out of the proverbial woods, and that's what matters. Carefully, Catherine begins to re-dress herself.]

Thank you for your time.

Absolutely. You're welcome to stop by at any time you'd like and I'm very easy to contact.

[ she's ignoring what the impending loss of such a distraction will mean and trying to appear as calm and collected as she always is. ]

I'll come in regularly until I'm comfortable with it. I'm also a physician myself, so this... may be close enough to a second home for me, for now.

[If Catherine knew, she'd try to help. A favor for a favor.]

You're welcome to come take shifts here as well, if you'd like. It might help occupy some of your time and I would welcome the company.

I fear I won't be as useful as I would like to be without full use of my... [She was going to say hands, but there's only one...] ...skills.

[ helen doesn't even blink, able to guess where that was going. ]

Believe me, I've had far worse working for me. For instance, you at least aren't trying to kill me. Unless you've designs to poison my tea, in which case, we may have to call the whole thing off.

[ forgive an old woman her coping mechanisms? ]

You won't have anything to worry about. I prefer the company of coffee, anyway.

[WHICH SHE HAD SOME OF, thank whoever is in charge of this place.]

[ to her credit, helen resists making a face at the mention of coffee. ]

If you don't poison my tea, I won't poison your coffee. Deal?

I... thank you again. Once I'm accustomed to things, I assure you I'll be one of the most useful and productive people here.

Of course.

[And when she's done situating herself, she'll just take her leave, obviously kind of caught up inside her own head.]
