Day 238 | closed voice; | open action;
[ liz is one of the lucky few who didn't spill her guts to the class yesterday, but that doesn't mean she feels entirely comfortable with everything that's been going on. So, in an effort to help get herself back on some sort of a schedule, she's taken to patrolling the dome today. she probably should just keep to one little area, but habits are hard to break and she's slowly coming to see this prison as her new "town." that means the whole place needs to be protected and that's what she's doing.

so she can be found wandering just about anywhere in the dome except sector 6. ]

[ locked voice to the mystic falls crew ]

[ later on, she leaves a message for everyone from mystic falls, just to check up on them. ]

Everyone doing okay today?

[ Eric listens, fingers steepled in front of him as she speaks. He's aware that she's baring her soul to him. ] I think the problem lies in the fact that by the very nature of the word, most people think you need to be human in order to have humanity, which is ridiculous. If that there the case, humans would have no reason to use the word. As for vampires being mindless killers, yes, some of them are, but then the same can be said for some humans as well. We're an evolution, so to speak, of humans. Something that was once human and now is human plus. You're right though, they can't be separated. Perhaps it's different in your world, but most often the vampire reflects the human they were.

[ He pauses a moment. ] Or they're a very old bag of dicks.

[ she nods, taking in what he's saying and turning it over seriously. this is definitely not a conversation she would ever have imagined herself having, but it's a good one. she's learning a lot and it's making her wish something like what his world has could have happened in hers. maybe then they wouldn't have had so many problems. ]

It's the same in mine. They sometimes talk about a switch you can flip to turn off your humanity. I don't think it really works, but I've never really asked any of them. The ones I tend to converse with are actually decent people. [ this includes damon and you now, eric.

she wasn't expecting his bag of dicks comment and it actually makes her laugh. good going, eric. a laugh and a slight blush of embarrassment. it's been a long time since anyone's managed that. ]
Should I take it to mean you've met a few of those? I know I have. [ THANKS, KLAUS. ]

I think see what you mean, though. We were brought up to believe that one a human turned into a vampire, they were no longer... [ she searches for the right word and then shrugs helplessly. ] They weren't worth saving. But Caroline's taught me so much, about vampires and what they can do and who they really are. She's a stronger person now, more confident, and as much as I wish she'd never had to go through that...

[ she pauses to purse her lips, trying to hold back the flood of emotions the topic of her daughter is bringing up. she misses knowing that caroline was human, misses knowing that she was safe and alive, but the person caroline is now is so much better off. despite liz's feeling that she failed in her role as protector of both the town and her own child, there's a part of her that knows caroline is a better person for what she's been through. ]

I could never change her and I'd never ask her to go back. She is who she is and I'm so proud of the person she's become.

[ in spite of the tears she's holding back and the way her voice sticks in her throat, there is genuine pride in her tone. she is proud of her daughter and she always will be now. they've come to an understanding and while they might not always get along, it's a lot better than what it used to be. ]

[ Eric listens because it's clearly what Liz needs. He would assume that she's been bottling this up, probably since before Caroline was turned. Occasionally, all one really needs is to get it out to someone who hears them. Eric is happy enough to be that person. He likes Caroline, is curious about her world and listening to Liz satisfies both the emotional and informational sides of him. ]

Some humans are meant for more--[ he was going to end that sentence there. really, and he realized it made him sound like an ass, which he's quite comfortable having most people believe, but he'd rather Liz not believe it of him. He'd rather Caroline not believe it of him. ] more than a short human life span can give them. [ that's marginally better, right? ]

[ He can hear the pride in her voice as well as the tears. Of course, when it comes to tears, Eric is awkward. He's never sure how to comfort someone. If he's close enough to them, he'll embrace them, or if they're younger than him and he feels comfortable playing the dad role. With Liz, he doesn't know her well enough and she definitely gives off a more maternal vibe than the vibe fo someone who wants and needs to be protected. ]

You have raised an extraordinary young woman.

[ it says a lot that she trusts eric enough to tell him all of this. but she knows he's a friend of caroline's and now he's a friend of hers, so she doesn't feel as though she needs to hide anything. he's one of the least judgmental people she's met, oddly enough, and she's very comfortable talking to him, even on such a difficult topic.

she isn't quite sure she understands what he means by "more" but she nods anyway. maybe some people can deal better with being a vampire than others. she doubts she could make of it what caroline has. maybe that's what he means. ]

I think, if I understand what you mean, she's one of those people. And I'm not.

[ she rather likes being human and she'd rather not change who she is.

as for his reaction to her, she appreciates that he isn't trying to embrace her or otherwise acknowledge the expression she'd been giving him. liz is one of those who prefers not to be comforted. she doesn't do well with being emotionally close anymore and it would confuse her further to have that boundary lowered. she does shake her head at his observation. ]

I don't think I had anything to do with that. [ and that isn't her being modest so much as it is her stating fact. she really doesn't think she's had much to do with the person caroline's become. after all, she didn't find out until matt came to her with the information and even then, she had to spy on caroline to really find out. she only accepted what caroline was when she shot and killed jeremy gilbert, when caroline had tried to save his life. as far as liz is concerned, she failed everything. ]

[ eric doesn't take that trust lightly. he's pragmatic about his friendships, but he respects that she's trusting him with something she doesn't normally share. as far as being judgemental, he can be extremely judgemental, but he hasn't seen anything in liz to judge as of yet. she's a parent who loves her daughter, a parent that regardless of her initial feelings on caroline's lifestyle change, came around in the end. that's something that eric has a great deal of admiration for even if he does think that's part and parcel of being a parent. ]

Not everyone is cut out for it. [ and something eric has always understood, even when he wasn't as burdened with humanity as he is now, the world needs humans as well as vampires. everyone has their use and their place.]

I was once a father. A human father. [ it's not something he often tells people. ] In my experience, parents regardless of how good or bad they are have everything to do with how their children turn out.

[ eric believes that experiences make a person, both vampire and human. even liz's failings made caroline who she is, in his opinion.]

[ she’s surprised at that admission, glancing up at him with cautious curiosity. this is just another example of how difficult it is for her to imagine vampires as anything other than vampires. she sometimes forgets they had other lives, human lives. but the important thing here is that she’s trying. ]

For better or worse, it is what it is, I guess. All I can be is proud of how she’s turned out. [ a sentiment she suspects he understands and shares. ]

[ It's not something many people know. however, maybe it's important for people to know, for them to see vampires as 'human' despite their differences.

Yes, that is the important thing. he nods in agreement.]

And it's a privilege. My oldest surviving child was ten when my family was murdered by a vampire.

[ it's something caroline has been working to show liz, to convince her of, and it's why she still believes in all of them, the humanity, the goodness in all of the vampires in her life. but that news is... she knows the horror of losing family, of knowing a child has died. she felt that when she discovered caroline was a vampire, but she can't imagine losing a child at ten years of age. ]

I'm sorry. That must have been difficult.

[ understatement of the century, but she understands the feeling of that loss. if he's worried that she's not treasuring caroline's existence, he doesn't need to. every day is a duality, a tug-of-war between liz's gratitude that she still has her daughter in any form and her guilt that she couldn't save caroline from dying and going through the horror of transitioning. ]

It was a very long time ago and it was the catalyst that resulted in my turning.

[ It's good that Liz realizes how fortunate she is. As for Eric's grief, it was a very, very long time ago and it is a pain that is so very distant.]

I can see why.

[ maybe eric could learn to deal with that kind of grief for so long, but liz isn't sure she could. were she in his position, she doubts she could have made the choice to turn. mortal though she is, she prefers being human. maybe caroline and eric were meant for bigger things than being human, but liz is more than sure she wasn't.

she pauses, distracted in her thoughts before she realizes they've been walking and talking for a long time. ]

I should let you get back to work. You've probably got better things to do than listen to me.

Very enlightening, I'll say. I enjoyed it.

[ she will, however, walk with him, conversation or not, until they reach the bar. she is carrying a bag for him, after all, and there's no reason to back out on that now. ]
