Day 238 | closed voice; | open action;
[ liz is one of the lucky few who didn't spill her guts to the class yesterday, but that doesn't mean she feels entirely comfortable with everything that's been going on. So, in an effort to help get herself back on some sort of a schedule, she's taken to patrolling the dome today. she probably should just keep to one little area, but habits are hard to break and she's slowly coming to see this prison as her new "town." that means the whole place needs to be protected and that's what she's doing.

so she can be found wandering just about anywhere in the dome except sector 6. ]

[ locked voice to the mystic falls crew ]

[ later on, she leaves a message for everyone from mystic falls, just to check up on them. ]

Everyone doing okay today?

[ Aw they're so cute and bonding! ]

Call it 'human' nature, if you'll pardon the term. Yes, it is one of the most difficult things to manage here.

[ yes, good. liz needs more questionably awesome friends. she raises an eyebrow at his phrasing, though. ]

Are you including yourself in that?

[ she's joking, eric. see her smirk and take it as a joke. ]

[ Eric is certainly questionable and awesome. He needs ahuman friends.

He smirks at her joke. ]

I do distinctly remember being human, a very long time ago.

[ smirking as well. ]

Then I think I can accept the term 'human nature.' [ she gives him a slightly wider smirk, glad to see he's taking her awkward joking well. how does she even be social here? ] At least it's something we all seem to have in common that isn't a combined dislike for these 'wardens.'

[ give her a minute or so, eric. she's got something on her mind after everything yesterday. something like vampires. ]

Hmmm. Yes. Common ground. We all happen to be stuck in the same situation as well and are equally as helpless to change anything other than our attitude regarding that situation. It's interesting, I wonder if those that are alien feel the same tendency toward 'human' nature as those of us that are human and that were once human.

[ it's an interesting question and liz tilts her head slightly as they walk, contemplating what he's saying. ] I guess you'd have to ask an alien if you ever found one.

[ she sounds a little disbelieving because aliens aren't exactly a thing in her world. she does give a soft and slightly rueful laugh and shakes her head. ]

Never would have thought I'd end up talking about aliens with a vampire. [ she's actually kind of amused at how her life has turned upside down in that regard. don't take offense, eric. ]

Here? I've definitely found aliens. One of them tasted of blueberries. Fascinating. He's fine, by the way.

[ There are green, blue and gray guys here. It's hard not to accept their existence. ]

And I never thought I'd end up having an intelligent conversation with a human. [ He's a bit amused as well. ]

[ she gives him a look like he's grown three heads, a look she usually gives damon for something similarly stated. whether or not it's because he mentioned aliens being real or eating one of them remains to be seen. ]

Looks like we've both learned a lot. Probably a good thing in the long run, or so I'm told. ...Better than blueberry blood. [ just don't kill anyone and she won't have anything as bad to complain about. ]

Evolving and adapting is always a good thing. [ It's how a vampire survives in his world. ]

Ah [ He looks nostalgic for a moment. ] It was very good, but I'll stick to faerie blood.

[ Given willingly and probably more information than Liz wanted to know. ]

[ you know, if she hadn't just been told that aliens exist here, she would be a bit less willing to accept the existence of faeries. but now, the only part of that she's giving a strange look to is the the blood part. again. sorry, eric. she's still getting used to this whole thing. it's only been a little over half a year since she became aware that not all vampires were blood-thirsty killers, so the idea of talking to one about how blood tastes is still something she's learning to... accept and deal with. ]

I... take it that has a different taste.

[ she's friends with damon salvatore. tmi is a thing she should be used to by now. ]

[ If it makes her feel any better, Eric was fairly unwilling to accept the existence of faeries as well until he met a full-blooded one and drained her dry. After that, he had to accept their existence in order to learn how to control himself.

He tilts his head a bit, raises one eyebrow and nods. ]
Like sunshine and freedom.

[ It was precisely what he'd told Sookie, although that wasn't descriptive in the sense that most people are accustomed to talking about food, however accurate it may be. ]

Regular blood is sufficient. It tastes quite good. Meaty, fulfilling, warm. Synthetic blood tastes like crap watered down.

[ All you needed to know about blood ]

I've certainly never heard that one before. [ sunshine and freedom are definitely new descriptors... ]

I guess synthetic would be even worse than animal blood. A lot of vampires in Mystic Falls either raid the hospital or drink from the local wildlife. It's kept the town's suspicions down before.

[ and yet somehow she keeps asking about it. maybe she really is trying to be more open-minded... ]

Animal blood won't sustain the vampires back home. [ Not to mention it tastes like crap.]

The synthetic does the job, but we don't garner much enjoyment from it.

I can, but it does nothing for me. I might as well starve myself. [ it makes feeding a different affair back home.

He considers that, frowning a bit. ]

For a couple of years now I've made certain my meals were willing. [ The frown turns to a smirk.] And these days, Sookie gets jealous.

[ Not that she's generally dinner, but Sookie was taught by Bill that sex and feeding tended to go hand in hand. Eric has worked very hard to prove differently to her so while he does feed on her and it often turns to sex, he is very careful to make sure that sex and blood don't always go hand in hand. They have a good deal of sex with no blood at all. ]

I can't speak for everyone else, but... that means something to me. [ as someone who once thought all vampires were animals, it means a hell of a lot. it means there's humanity in him and she'll fight for anyone who shows humanity. ]

Jealous girlfriend?

[ she's teasing. she doesn't know that much about eric, but she can understand a jealous girlfriend and if she's a vampire's jealous human girlfriend, it makes sense. ]

[ Eric nods. ] It was a political move as much as it was a humane move. [ That's not entirely true, but Eric has difficulty admitting just how much humanity he has. ]

Yes. [ He still has difficulty calling her his girlfriend simply because he thinks it belittles what she is to him. It's such a human term. ] Sookie Stackhouse. She's a friend of Caroline's as well. I'd be surprised if you hadn't spoken to her.

Vampires are involved in-- [ she pauses, not really sure how to phrase this. ] ...vampire politics?

[ it's okay, eric. her experience with damon gives her a chance to understand when vampires care more than they want anyone to think. ]

I think we have, but not much. If she's yours, she must be a good person.

Vampires are involved in politics. Period, but yes we have a great deal of 'vampire' politics to navigate as well. There's an authority and for a while it's primary purpose was to smooth over tensions between humans and vampires.

[ He gives her his most charming smile. ] I was their poster boy for a good while.

[ He nods, surprised that Liz phrases things that way. Most humans don't understand vampire phrases such as mine, and her use of the word 'yours' seems to suggest that she does. However, maybe he's reading too much into that. ] She is an extraordinary person.

[ he'll have to excuse her. she's still trying to understand things and how vampires work in other worlds. she might not understand everything about the wording he gives, or even her own, but she's trying and she understands there's more to it than she knows. ]

We had the Founder's Council. Our job was to protect the town from vampires. At any cost. I can't count the number we've lost over the years, especially the last two. [ not counting the ones who died in that fire on the farm, it's pretty much down to just liz now. and the salvatores, for what they count as. so, really, it says a lot that liz trusts eric at all, considering he's what she once protected the town from. caroline being what she is helped that. ]

If your politics are anywhere near as complex as ours, I bet it was a lot of fun to deal with.

[ He's reasonably patient with people when it comes to the vampire authority and understanding it. He's learned that his world is very different where vampires are concerned. He's willing to explain because while the system has it's flaws, it's worked beautifully in allowing vampires and humans to coexist. He nods as he listens to her. ]

I've told Mr. Reid, and I'll repeat for anyone who cares to listen, it is not a human's job to police a vampire. Yes, they have to come to an agreement about how the coexistence is going to work, but there has to be a vampire council to enforce that. Humans are incapable of doing so. [ For once, it's not superiority, simply fact. ]

Fun is one way to deal with it. I chose to avoid the authority as much as possible, while my sister has made it her life's goal to be in charge of the authority. She's part of it now. [ Pride is obvious in Eric's voice. Nora has worked hard and even if he doesn't understand her goals and desires, he is proud of what she's accomplished. ]

[ she nods along with the explanation, taking it for what it is and not being offended by what could be considered superiority. his world is very different from his, but she's starting to think that had the founding families been less hostile towards vampires, they could have avoided a lot more bloodshed. ]

We've never had a vampire council in my world. Just the Founder's Council, set up by the Founding Families back in the 1860's. All we've ever had was the belief that vampires were out to kill us all. It's what we've lived with for a hundred years, part of what Mystic Falls was founded on. [ and liz was part of that for a very long time, most of her life, in fact. ] It took me being faced with the fact that my own daughter had become one to realize how wrong I was. [ and it means a lot that she's admitting this at all. ] Some people never accept that they still have humanity, the capability of being more than just a mindless killer. Those people can't understand that the vampire and the person aren't two different parts of the whole being. They're one and the same. You can't separate them no matter how hard you try.

[ if she sounds like she's known someone who's tried that method...? it's because she does. and for once, it wasn't her. ]

[ Eric listens, fingers steepled in front of him as she speaks. He's aware that she's baring her soul to him. ] I think the problem lies in the fact that by the very nature of the word, most people think you need to be human in order to have humanity, which is ridiculous. If that there the case, humans would have no reason to use the word. As for vampires being mindless killers, yes, some of them are, but then the same can be said for some humans as well. We're an evolution, so to speak, of humans. Something that was once human and now is human plus. You're right though, they can't be separated. Perhaps it's different in your world, but most often the vampire reflects the human they were.

[ He pauses a moment. ] Or they're a very old bag of dicks.

[ she nods, taking in what he's saying and turning it over seriously. this is definitely not a conversation she would ever have imagined herself having, but it's a good one. she's learning a lot and it's making her wish something like what his world has could have happened in hers. maybe then they wouldn't have had so many problems. ]

It's the same in mine. They sometimes talk about a switch you can flip to turn off your humanity. I don't think it really works, but I've never really asked any of them. The ones I tend to converse with are actually decent people. [ this includes damon and you now, eric.

she wasn't expecting his bag of dicks comment and it actually makes her laugh. good going, eric. a laugh and a slight blush of embarrassment. it's been a long time since anyone's managed that. ]
Should I take it to mean you've met a few of those? I know I have. [ THANKS, KLAUS. ]

I think see what you mean, though. We were brought up to believe that one a human turned into a vampire, they were no longer... [ she searches for the right word and then shrugs helplessly. ] They weren't worth saving. But Caroline's taught me so much, about vampires and what they can do and who they really are. She's a stronger person now, more confident, and as much as I wish she'd never had to go through that...

[ she pauses to purse her lips, trying to hold back the flood of emotions the topic of her daughter is bringing up. she misses knowing that caroline was human, misses knowing that she was safe and alive, but the person caroline is now is so much better off. despite liz's feeling that she failed in her role as protector of both the town and her own child, there's a part of her that knows caroline is a better person for what she's been through. ]

I could never change her and I'd never ask her to go back. She is who she is and I'm so proud of the person she's become.

[ in spite of the tears she's holding back and the way her voice sticks in her throat, there is genuine pride in her tone. she is proud of her daughter and she always will be now. they've come to an understanding and while they might not always get along, it's a lot better than what it used to be. ]

[ Eric listens because it's clearly what Liz needs. He would assume that she's been bottling this up, probably since before Caroline was turned. Occasionally, all one really needs is to get it out to someone who hears them. Eric is happy enough to be that person. He likes Caroline, is curious about her world and listening to Liz satisfies both the emotional and informational sides of him. ]

Some humans are meant for more--[ he was going to end that sentence there. really, and he realized it made him sound like an ass, which he's quite comfortable having most people believe, but he'd rather Liz not believe it of him. He'd rather Caroline not believe it of him. ] more than a short human life span can give them. [ that's marginally better, right? ]

[ He can hear the pride in her voice as well as the tears. Of course, when it comes to tears, Eric is awkward. He's never sure how to comfort someone. If he's close enough to them, he'll embrace them, or if they're younger than him and he feels comfortable playing the dad role. With Liz, he doesn't know her well enough and she definitely gives off a more maternal vibe than the vibe fo someone who wants and needs to be protected. ]

You have raised an extraordinary young woman.
