237 | Avoidance Group* Therapy Mingle
(*Also known under the snappy alternative name "If I ignore my problems, maybe they'll go away" Group.)

[In the usually so quiet library where we lay our scene, things are a little less quiet and a little less library-like, given that today it's full of bots, a few tables with neat little trays full of assorted snacks, and - of course - therapy subjects in varying states of willingness.

The robots, true to form, don't bother anyone who doesn't try to leave. Those who do try will have their path brusquely cut off and their attention directed to a whiteboard at the far end of the room - it's mostly empty, with plenty of room for writing, except for one sentence in the middle of the board, written in red: "Admitting to one's problems opens doors." Is that an attempt at an inspirational message, or meant to be taken literally? We just don't know.

There's also a table just beneath the whiteboard with little stacks of cards with suggested discussion topics (with instructions to work in pairs or smaller groups, taking turns to answer the questions).]

• Share one of your ambitions. What are actions you have taken in order to fulfill it? Are there more things you could do? Give suggestions on more ways of working towards your goals.

• Share one of your fears. What are actions you have taken in order to stop it from coming through? Are there actions you have actively avoided taking? Does the group have any fears in common?

• Are there certain tasks, responsibilities or situations you often find yourself avoiding in everyday life? If yes, how do you get out of them? Is there an alternative approach? Give and compare examples, discuss reasons.

• Is there something currently worrying you? If so, what? If your fears were to be realised, what is the worst-case scenario for it? Is there a best-case scenario? Brainstorm possible ways of solving the situation.

• What is one difficult situation you have experienced recently? How did you deal with it?

• Share one achievement you feel proud of having accomplished.

[There are also a number of scenarios along the lines of "You have a work assignment due tomorrow, but a friend calls you inviting you to a night out. What do you do?" as well ask the questions that can be found scrolling down this site. Feel free to make up your own!]

Ew. [Korra hates dealing with drunk people.] I hope you beat some sense into him.

I'd think so. Mal taught me how to ride a horse the next day, so I'd say we're even. Mostly. ["Mostly" because Bart also really hates dealing with drunk people.]

Though I've gotta say, what was with that entrance? Were you trying to play hooky? [He's half-teasing, half completely concerned. He likes her too much to watch her go through those things.]

[Ick. Way to put a damper on her mood!] I wasn't trying to play hooky. I just thought they put me in the wrong group. And the bots disagreed.

Hey, the bots disagreed with me too. I tried to make a run for it myself, but they can move at the friggin' speed of light if they wanted to.

[Bart was so much better off not knowing that. Subject change!] What other sessions are you signed up for? Or do they not have names?

[Korra finishes off the last of her snack and starts heading out the door.]

"Self-Acceptance." [She snorts.] I'm pretty sure they just pick groups at random, because I accept myself just fine.

What about you?

Then you can help other people accept themselves. You know, encourage their self-esteem an' stuff.

Apparently, "Time-Space Compression." Not exactly sure what that means, but I'll figure it out when I get there. [Because really, the Wardens wouldn't call a therapy group "Shenanigans." Bart's actually a bit excited for this - it has to be better than Avoidance Issues! Right?]

Yeah, I guess. [Korra still feels like that's a weird choice for the wardens to make. But it wouldn't be the weirdest thing they've done.

Like.....]

Time. Space. Compression. Sounds confusing.

I don't think it'll be. [He hopes.] It sounds like something for people with powers like mine, so maybe they'll tell us how to better control them or something.

[Bart shrugs.] If it ends up being really weird, I'll tell you all about it tomorrow.

Exactly. My doc said it means I perceive time differently from everyone else, but it shouldn't be on the scale of whatever this therapy session is.

Why would being able to run really fast affect how you perceive time?

[If she thought about it, she'd get it. Korra's problem is she doesn't always think.]

It only looks fast to you. To me, it's like I'm running at a normal speed. [Running, talking, walking - all physical activities at a normal person's pace? They can all move at a snail's pace to him if he's not careful.]

Since my "normal speed" is in the blink of an eye, time moves differently for me sometimes.

[She takes a moment to think about it.] I guess that makes sense. [Kind of. Maybe? Honestly, "perception of time" is too abstract a concept in general for her to really grasp. Just thinking about it makes her a little dizzy.]

How's everything going with your nephew? [There. Much easier conversation topic. (For her, at least.)]

In a way, it does. [He shrugs. There's a lot of science behind it, but heck if he can understand the algorithms.

When she brings up Wally, Bart presses his lips together.]
Things're okay. We get along well - and he was here today, so I guess he's got avoidance problems of his own? - but it's... it is what it is.

[Wally's existence just brings a lot of Bart's life choices into question, and while he loves that kid unconditionally, Bart also can't help wondering why Wally admires him (or rather, the him in Wally's world) so much.]

[He snorts.] I know. He's a great kid - and so much smarter than I am - but when we're together, I can't help thinking of the Uncle Bart he knows.

How'm I supposed to live up to that?

You don't have to. [Korra gently bumps his shoulder with hers.] Trust me. My airbending master is the son of my previous life. My waterbending master was his wife. He saved the entire world when he was just 12 years old. There's no way I could ever live up to that.

[She's actually not as at peace with that as she sounds right now, but it's easier to have perspective on her own problems when talking about his.]

A different world needs a different Avatar. I have to assume the same applies to Barts. I think you're plenty cool, just the way you are.

[The whole reincarnation thing still bothers him, though Bart knows it has more to do with Korra's past life being a guy.

Still, her shedding some light on her problem makes him feel better about his own issues.]
You think so?

[He coughs.] I mean, yeah, you're right. I am pretty darn awesome when I want to be.

See? See? [He's practically preening at this point. It's kind of a shame that they're starting to get close to Sector 0, because he doesn't want to split off from her so soon.] I'm Mr. Humble.

[He laughs, unable to keep up the charade for long.] Though I guess you and most of my friends would clearly disagree.
