[ day 234 ] action :: open
It’s late in the day and Jean-Luc is just leaving the hospital. Aside from the fact that it takes something of great magnitude to get him into any kind of sick bay, an abnormal experience had been made even more surreal by the cold sterility of the bots. Nevertheless, something had happened that made him feel that a medical exam was necessary. It had just been several ticks in his chest, right where his artificial heart implant was. It usually ran without fail, almost unnoticeable to the point that he forgot that he had an artificial heart at all. Given the unknowns of the medical advancements and knowledge of the prison, he had thought it best to reassure himself that all was well without drawing too much attention to the issue or himself. He knew how concerned both Data and Geordi, and possibly even Seven, might be were they to know that he felt... unwell.

It's his distrust of the bots as a whole which had him heading toward the clinic that Helen runs. He might run into anyone along the way, but he opens the voice function to Helen as he moved through the dome.

[ Voice locked to Helen ]

Doctor Magnus, [ He clears his throat, realizing his error. ] Helen, perhaps you might find the time to meet me at your clinic as soon as you’re able.

ooc: Picard is on a trek from sector 5 to sector 3. Anyone can run into him between point A and point B. Or afterward. Technology fail!

[ Coincidentally, sector 5 is the one that Data patrols for the Defense Force - a task he is in the midst of attending when he comes across Captain Picard. It's not right by the hospital that he finds him, so there's no immediate connection the what the Captain's activity at the moment entails. Certainly, though, he would never fail to acknowledge his superior officer, so he approaches with a nod. ]

Captain.

[ Jean-Luc is surprised to run into Data, almost as surprised as he had been to run into Seven and Geordi. Much like living on a Starship, the prison is such a confined space that it's difficult to do anything without everyone knowing some aspect of it. But he pauses in his trek, more than comfortable with greeting Data. ]

Lieutenant Commander. Out for an evening stroll?

Presently, I am patrolling the sector under my assignment from the Defense Force.

[ There's no inkling, at least, of what the Captain is up to at the moment; he tilts his head and arches a brow, considering the query. ]

And you, sir - are you out for an "evening stroll"?

Oh, somewhat. You've caught in the middle of point A and point B, so to speak.

[ He pauses, considering what to say next and how to word it. ] Data, when you... [ He pauses. ] On the rare occasion that you have malfunctioned, would you describe to me what it feels like?

[ The response gets a small nod.

The question demands a response that is far more challenging to phrase, however. He has frequently questioned humans on how various things feel - he even has some limited understanding of how it is for humans to feel in a tactile sense now, thanks of course to the Borg. But an internal feeling - a malfunction - that is a far more complex issue to attempt to explain. ]

I am not certain that I can explain it in a manner to which you would be able to relate, sir. However - it would depend upon the way in which I were malfunctioning. I may experience an involuntary action, a loss of control over a portion of my functionality. Most often, my diagnostic systems recognize the issue and alert me to the situation.

[ He pauses, and ticks his head to one side, frowning. ]

But as for a question of feeling - if my diagnostics do not detect and inform me of the issue, I must rely on my awareness of how I typically feel. I may notice that a particular task is more challenging than it should be, that I am having difficulty with certain neural processes, or that one or more of my servos are not responding as readily as they should. In such events, I am simply aware that my systems are no longer in line with their intended level of functionality. I suppose that, in a way, I sense that something is "off" - that some of my components are not functioning to my typical specifications.

[ And there, a small shake of his head. ]

I am not certain if that is helpful.

[ He's going to ask why the Captain asked, of course - but he'll wait to see if there are further inquiries first. ]

[ It is most definitely a complicated question, especially to Data. But what Data says makes sense. And he has yet to feel anything happen that's out of his control. Nor has he found anything more challenging than normal. It was just a few ticks that weren't normally there. This makes him breathe a small sigh of relief.

He nods his understanding.
] Oh no, Data. Consider my curiosity sated. Thank you.

Certainly, sir.

[ Which leaves the matter of his own questioning. ]

May I inquire as to the reason for your curiosity?

I felt a tick.

[ It was really the best way to explain it. And he knew if he gave Data a direct order he would follow it unless he felt it put people in danger. ] And I expect you to keep that information to yourself.

[ He tilts his head the slightest bit, a rapid motion that indicates the surprise and concern that strike him immediately. ]

Of course, sir. This tick - you are referring to your heart?

No, the heart is more of a hum. This... tick... it was something else.

[ He pauses, considering the connotations of what he had just admitted. ] Perhaps I imagined it.

[ Something else. That sticks with Data - everything does, of course, but this gets a special denotation. But he simply gives a small nod. ]

Perhaps.

[ But he doubts that. ]
