[ day 234 ] action :: open
It’s late in the day and Jean-Luc is just leaving the hospital. Aside from the fact that it takes something of great magnitude to get him into any kind of sick bay, an abnormal experience had been made even more surreal by the cold sterility of the bots. Nevertheless, something had happened that made him feel that a medical exam was necessary. It had just been several ticks in his chest, right where his artificial heart implant was. It usually ran without fail, almost unnoticeable to the point that he forgot that he had an artificial heart at all. Given the unknowns of the medical advancements and knowledge of the prison, he had thought it best to reassure himself that all was well without drawing too much attention to the issue or himself. He knew how concerned both Data and Geordi, and possibly even Seven, might be were they to know that he felt... unwell.

It's his distrust of the bots as a whole which had him heading toward the clinic that Helen runs. He might run into anyone along the way, but he opens the voice function to Helen as he moved through the dome.

[ Voice locked to Helen ]

Doctor Magnus, [ He clears his throat, realizing his error. ] Helen, perhaps you might find the time to meet me at your clinic as soon as you’re able.

ooc: Picard is on a trek from sector 5 to sector 3. Anyone can run into him between point A and point B. Or afterward. Technology fail!

[ it's a little worrisome that he's asking this sort of thing of her. she'd gotten the impression that he was like her: a terrible patient. but even so, there is no trace of that apprehension when she responds. ]

Absolutely. I haven't yet left, despite the hour. [ she keeps the worst hours, really. ] I can meet you now, if you'd like.

[ He is the worst patient. But he also wasn't one to take unnecessary risks with his own life. In his world, he knew the tech was there to repair anything gone wrong so that he could put things off to the last minute. Here, he wasn't so certain of that. ]

I'll arrive shortly.

[ His voice sounds a little tight and stiff because of his discomfort over admitting to any physical weaknesses. ] And thank you for making the time.

[ he can't be worse than she is. she's the one who worked straight through nearly dying of radiation poisoning, after all. and she doesn't have the excuse of superior medical capabilities. either way, she pauses for a split second to study the sound of his voice before answering. ]

Of course. [ she could do no less than make time for him.

and she's waiting in the front room for him, however long it takes him to make his way over. her apprehension aside, it will be very good to see him again. ]

[ He arrives only seconds later, making it even more obvious that he'd been on his way before he'd even contacted her, or at the very least close by. Stepping into the clinic, he sees her waiting for him and he offers her a small, closed-mouthed grin and a curt nod. Somehow, even just seeing her seemed to make things better. ]

Helen. [ His voice is softened with her name now that he sees her face to face. He steps further into the front room of the clinic, closer to her. His eyes seem to take her in without being too overtly obvious about studying her. ]

You look well. I hadn't imagined you might be working at such a late hour.

[ it's all the more worrisome and she takes the time to look him over with a critical doctor's eye to be absolutely certain he doesn't look ill or in anything other than perfect health. he appears fine to her, which is both comforting and not at the same time.

even more worrisome is how the simple act of seeing him brings back her conversation with rebekah, the things they spoke about with regard to her feelings towards this one person. she had promised to at least ask him about certain things, but given the circumstances, she doesn't think now is the best time for that.

she takes a deep breath, noticing how close he is, and fights the flush she knows will creep up on her if she isn't careful. ]

Some nights I find it difficult to sleep. I don't idle well, never have. [ it's a quiet admission as her eyes take him in for a second pass, a second opinion of his state of being, before she motions him into one of the back rooms so she can check him over. ]

What can I do for you? Is something wrong?

We're alike in that regard.

[ Not sleeping well and being ill-equipped for downtime? Yes, the list of similarities just keeps growing and growing. And each time it strikes him as more and more notable between the two of them.

Her question gives him pause. Because he so loathes to admit to such things as medical problems.
] I uh... well, I'm afraid it's more than a social visit. [ Stalling... stalling... terrible patient... stalling... ]

Remind me to send you a list of things to do the next time neither of us can sleep.

[ and she is ignoring any ways that could be taken other than strict professionalism.

the list of similarities is indeed growing and she finds it interesting -- for lack of a better term that she doesn't want to draw out yet -- that they are so alike, so drawn to each other. it makes her conversation with rebekah all the more relevant. soon. with luck, it will be soon.

she watches him with a practiced eye as she turns back towards him once inside the room, her professionalism warring with a deep-seated personal concern. it isn't the first time she's felt this, but it's certainly the first time in a long time since it's been quite this level of personal concern.

she does give him a pointed look he has yet to see from her as he stalls. she's known plenty of patients to try this tactic. it likely won't work any better now than it has in the past. ]

I'll sit you down and take your vitals to find out if you'd rather.

[ her voice is firm, both sides of her internal war agreeing that it's best to check on him by force if she has to. something is obviously not quite right if he's come to her for medical attention of any sort and she is determined to find out what.

welcome to your new doctor, picard. she's a fiery one. ]

Seven imagines that, much like herself, Captain Picard undergoes weekly check ups with Doctor Crusher to monitor both his biological systems and how they are interacting with his artificial heart and the remnants of Borg technology that are still present throughout his body. His implants are less noticeable, given that he was assimilated for a relatively short period of time when compared to the eighteen years she spent as a drone, but they're there. Just because someone can't see them like they can hers doesn't mean they aren't there. Someone who was once assimilated by the Borg never stops being Borg. It's one of the harsh realities of being liberated from the Collective, and one of the reasons why she's doesn't necessarily enjoy the prospect of returning to Earth.

With her implants as visible as they are, she can't hide what she is and once was. She'd be a walking reminder of the Battle of Wolf 359, of what was almost accomplished during the Battle of Sector 001. The Borg might be indirectly responsible for the creation of the Federation, but they very nearly prevented it from coming into being in the first place.

"Captain?"

Hearing his title as he left the hospital, Jean-Luc turned and spotted Seven. He hadn’t necessarily wanted to get caught leaving the medical facility, but he supposed if it were anyone, he would prefer it to be her. She wouldn’t immediately jump to conclusions or get overtly concerned, or so he thought. He clasped his hands behind his back and offered a curt nod and a tight, closed mouthed smile to her. “Seven. I trust you’re well?”

He was correct; she wouldn't. Seven assumed that Picard was merely undergoing routine monitoring, something that is the norm for ex-drones like themselves. Borg technology was complex and temperamental when it was one with the Collective, outside of it, a simple chemical imbalance could set off nanoprobe production or cause something to fail. It made the fact that the components they were left with after being liberated from the Borg couldn't work with their bodies at time as much as their bodies could no longer function without them ironic.

Perhaps there was deliberate strategy in that in the hope that wayward drones would find their way back to the Collective. It would be just like them.

Just like her. (Seven despised the Queen more than she thought possible, especially from POV of a being who considered contempt and hatred to be an irrational emotional response that often clouded one's judgement.)

"Yes. And you?" She wasn't prying, merely making conversation. She's been working on her conversational skills, taking advantage of the setting in order to broaden them.

"Yes, according to the bots in the hospital, I am the picture of health." Said with a bit of irony, of course. He shouldn't have expected the bots to understand his particular physiology in the first place, which is why he was headed to see Helen. If she said that all seemed well, he would trust it more than he would technology diagnosing technology.

That implant over her eye raises slightly upwards, pulled by the remaining muscles in her forehead as high as the skin attached to the circuitry the outer casting of her implant hides will allow. Members of Voyager's crew have likened her tendency to do just that to the way Vulcans lift a brow in curiosity, interest, and so on. She supposed that if she were to take anything they said about her as a compliment, it would be something that compared her to a logical being. Vulcans were still irrational at their cores, far from the perfection the Borg sought to obtain, but they were considerably more Borg-like than the majority of the races the Collective encountered.

"I am pleased. I wish for you to remain in good health, Captain."

It's still awkward — talking to him, that is. Seven regarded him as the only person truly capable of understanding what it was like to be her, to be liberated from the Collective and still be Borg. He had an easier time of it than she, it was true, but he'd been through it. He'd been assimilated, lived as a drone, and had to figure out how to live again without those whispers in his ear, without their song. No one else, no matter how much they compare and claim, can understand what that's like. She appreciated that perspective as much as she was sorry he had possessed it at all.

Even a simple comment such as that, coming from Seven, was very telling and much appreciated. He understood her in a way that no one else could. Both in their shared experience with the Borg, and in his insight over the years of Data's exploration of humanity. She was very much like Data, learning and exploring what she might wish to be rather than remaining stagnate in the parameters that might be expected of her.

"Thank you, Seven." He paused, deciding he could ask without getting too deep into it. "May I ask you a personal question?"

[Geordi happens to be out and about, taking a stroll to the grocery store for supplies. Not having replicators is taking some getting used to. He happens upon the Captain a distance away from any medical facilities, so his greeting is lacking any overt concern.]

Hey, Captain. I went and restocked our coffee and tea supplies, since we were running low. I guess we'll have to remember to stay on top of that now, huh? [He rifles a little in his bag.] Earl Grey, right?

[ He honestly doesn't mind the distraction from his current train of thought, especially when it involves the mundane, such as tea or coffee. ]

Really? Maybe it's because I was raised more on starships than on Earth, but it's going to be a while before I get used to the idea of cooking all the time.

...Come to think of it, I wonder if they use replicator technology for the food and restaurants they have here. [He's still trying to figure this place out, both because it's what he always does and because maybe it can help them find out how to get home.]

It's an interesting quandary, indeed. Perhaps they've similar technology to our own and we're currently none the wiser for it.

[ Which would give him hope should his heart be malfunctioning as he's worried that it might be. But on the subject of food. ] Perhaps some evening soon I'll rustle up my mother's ratatouille recipe. It's been some years since I made it with her, of course. But I believe I remember enough to pull it off with some manner of success for us all to sit down to dinner together.

[Even though he knows it's not intended to make a point, or at least not the point Geordi takes from it, he feels a little guilty. Not enough to dampen his smile, but enough to encourage himself to get into a higher gear when it comes to figuring this place out.] It's just a matter of time until we figure out what's going on here, and how to reverse it.

In the meantime, dinner sounds great. It's kind of strange having so much free time all of a sudden, but we should take advantage of at least a little of it.

[ His intention was not to pressure Geordi into anything. But he knew that between Data and Geordi if there was a way out they had both the willpower and the knowledge to find it. He would always bet on his crew against any foe. ]

Agreed. Have you thought to join the Investigative team of the Defense Force? It isn't necessary as anything Data or myself learn will surely be passed along to you. But it might give you further insight toward the how and why of this place nonetheless.

[ Coincidentally, sector 5 is the one that Data patrols for the Defense Force - a task he is in the midst of attending when he comes across Captain Picard. [ The response gets a small nod.

The question demands a response that is far more challenging to phrase, however. He has frequently questioned humans on how various things feel - he even has some limited understanding of how it is for humans to feel in a tactile sense now, thanks of course to the Borg. But an internal feeling - a malfunction - that is a far more complex issue to attempt to explain. ]

I am not certain that I can explain it in a manner to which you would be able to relate, sir. However - it would depend upon the way in which I were malfunctioning. I may experience an involuntary action, a loss of control over a portion of my functionality. Most often, my diagnostic systems recognize the issue and alert me to the situation.

[ He pauses, and ticks his head to one side, frowning. ]

But as for a question of feeling - if my diagnostics do not detect and inform me of the issue, I must rely on my awareness of how I typically feel. I may notice that a particular task is more challenging than it should be, that I am having difficulty with certain neural processes, or that one or more of my servos are not responding as readily as they should. In such events, I am simply aware that my systems are no longer in line with their intended level of functionality. I suppose that, in a way, I sense that something is "off" - that some of my components are not functioning to my typical specifications.

[ And there, a small shake of his head. ]

I am not certain if that is helpful.

[ He's going to ask why the Captain asked, of course - but he'll wait to see if there are further inquiries first. ]

[ It is most definitely a complicated question, especially to Data. But what Data says makes sense. And he has yet to feel anything happen that's out of his control. Nor has he found anything more challenging than normal. It was just a few ticks that weren't normally there. This makes him breathe a small sigh of relief.

He nods his understanding.
] Oh no, Data. Consider my curiosity sated. Thank you.
