[Day 234] [Voice|Open|Backdated to Pre-Morning Announcement]
[So it's just after four in the morning and a certain someone has been skipping sleep for a few days now, working on different projects. It's harder to get things to work when you don't have that much in materials to build with, but Richie keeps at it. Even if he can't build, he can at least design. It's not like the days of little distraction give him less time to come up with ideas for new inventions. He just finished drawing the schematics for a solar-powered motorbike.

He takes another sip of his coffee only to realize it's chilled and grimace at the cold. And then another idea hits him and it's awesome but he doesn't have anyone to tell just how awesome it is. So he makes a call, which he completely thinks is privated to Zatanna, but he's running on two hours of sleep in the last three days, so.]

Yo, Zee...what do you think about a solar powered motorbike with--get this. A self-regulating drink holder! It would be amazing right? It would go great with the helmet with the built-in voice-command wifi and satellite radio. I'd just need to design to add-in an sensor for controlling the temperatures between coffee, iced tea, and warm milk.

[His tone is a bit manic, but energetic. He's past the point of fatigue to the kind of crazed euphoria that is a sign of a bad crash to come.]

[...what?]

[No, really, what?]

[SHe picked up the phone and heard words. She was even sure they were English. But it all went in one ear and out the other. Mainly because it was four in the morning.]

[Sleepily, Zatanna pulled her communicator away from her ear long enough to stare at it blankly before quietly hanging up, and almost immediately faceplanted back into her pillow.]

[Richie is still babbling because he hasn't really noticed she hasn't answered. When he does finally realize no one is responding back he wonders what happened.]

Zee? Hey, Zee, did this work?

[So of course he calls her back.]

Sorry, Zee I think my communicator cut us off. Man, I don't know I think I may need to adjust my communicator again. Maybe the last time I calibrated it to test different frequencies I forgot to reset it. It's always something you forget.

[Richie. Richie, please.]

[No, really, please.]

Do you have any idea what time it is?

It's...[He checks his watch before answering her.]...four-oh-nine and thirty-six, thirty-seven...thirty-eight seconds.

Great time for thinking, right?

No, Richie. No, it's not.

Some of still need our beauty sleep, you know--come to think of it, when was the last time you slept?

[Speaking of belated realizations, she sat up a little further in bed when it dawned on her that the boy was acting exactly like someone who was sleep deprived and hung up on way too much caffine than should be legal.]

[Yuuri didn't actually sleep with the communicator on his head, but he didn't actually turn the sound off either and it didn't make it any further than the pillow next to him, so when it clicks on during a very vivid dream, he awakes suddenly.]

No fire balls! I didn't take your dress, Wolfram!

Huh? [Richie is confused by that.] I pretty sure I don't have a dress to take, man. Sure you weren't hypnotized by an alien invader?

[It's okay. Yuuri's pretty confused by it all too. He moves the headset closer, putting it on fully.] Richie? No, it's just what Wolfram wears to bed. Wait, what? Are there aliens on motorbikes?

[If Richie was more coherent, he probably would not be as cool with that statement.] He should wear fireproof clothes.

And who said anything about aliens on motorbikes? Unless they're cool aliens. Aliens riding on space rocket motorbikes would be awesome.

[Pause] Space rocket motorcycles! Why didn't I think of that before?

I think I should. Except he isn't actually here to set me on fire. [If it weren't so late...early? that statement would make him sadder.]

Didn't you talk about the aliens and motorbikes? Space rocket... What time is it? [Yawn. He's not sure which of them is forgetting to make sense.]

My kind of night! I mean, who wouldn't get awesome ideas for making a memory enhancing stimulator helmet after working with a warp core?

...You know, if they know what a warp core is. [Which Richie does not.]

[Geordi grins, both because this kid's fun and because he loves explaining things.]

A warp core is the propulsion system we use for space travel over lightyears. It uses matter and antimatter reactions to let us travel through the systems without it taking lifetimes to get there. And it's my pride and joy... back home, anyway.

You can make just about any machine solar-powered with enough know-how and the right kind of equipment. Now whether or not it'll have the power to be of any use--hey, that's what test phases are for.

Not yet. They don't have those kind of parts just lying around. It takes time to build things around here. [Scavenging for parts is not easy.]

[ there's a moment of utter spazzing on his end before he clambers for the network device, fumbling at the controls because it's 4 in the morning and he hasn't had much sleep either.

Different labs, different times, same concept. ]

Would it be portable?

[ because that would be awesome to have in the lab for when he forgot the tea in lieu of laboring over an act of love. It could be hours before he remembered and the vaunted thermos did not deliver! ]

[Hey, more people! Really he should probably wonder why he didn't do a better job of filtering this, but oh well.]

The prototype will have to be. Don't want to attach it to the bike and then find out it doesn't work, right?

[ he's nodding along thoughtfully, already jotting ideas and concerns in the margin of a notebook. ]

You'll need a decent sized power source. It may be more useful to incorporate it into the cup itself.

[ less danger that way of running out of warm coffee trying to fix a tire. ]

2013-08-31 08:37 pm UTC (link)
Nah, it doesn't take a lot of power to heat something. Anything with a battery gives off heat, so you just need to control how much heat will affect cup. Maybe a thermometer on the bottom of the cup holder. [So maybe he thinks about this too much.] The trick is figure out how to chill it if you want iced tea.
