[Here is the self-proclaimed King of the Planet of Sadists, looking extremely tired. Dark circles and bags under his eyes.]

31 hours later, I beat the game... I am the master.

[He holds up his DS proudly. Then he sets it down and holds up a finger.]

This wasn't how I was gonna spend my day, but I decided to be a nice guy and give everyone a day off from living in fear from my torture and sadist ways.

[As ever, Sougo puts together quite the hodgepodge of items -- though Lacus is surprised. None of them involve what she considers to be frivolous or off-topic things.]

[She continues rubbing the middle of his back as she leans her chin on his shoulder.] You can sleep as long as you like, and I'll be waiting with breakfast. I'll rub your back as often as you like. And thanks to you, I will be okay.

[As for that last matter... she pauses before addressing it.] I'm relatively sure that Tyki did hunt him down and did something. Something I'm not sure I want to know about. [For him, she keeps herself steady, but she's obviously feeling guilty about it. She never meant for anyone to get hurt, even if Spike perhaps deserved it.]

[As much as his protectiveness is touching, Lacus doesn't know that she likes it. Kira had similar intentions with her, and Neil, and it never sat well. She much prefers to take care of herself. But then, she hasn't been doing a very good job of it. In any sense of the word.]

[Lacus pauses his backrub for a brief moment before folding her arms gently around him.] Neither do I. [That's the only true thing she knows just now. Her getting hurt isn't just a matter of her own well-being, it's the people who care for her that suffer most.]

[She doesn't want Sougo to be after Spike, both because she doesn't want him hurt and because she doesn't think it would be right. Tyki going after him wasn't right. Sougo, though, probably is feeling just as helpless as she is. Maybe his going after Spike wouldn't be smart, but maybe it would give him some sense of peace. Maybe. And if nothing else, it would let Sougo know that she trusts him. Completely.]

[If he gets hurt she won't forgive herself. That's also going through her mind... but what if that very same thing is going through his?]

[Lacus closes her eyes and leans her cheek against the back of his shoulder. Deep breath.]

Do you want me to tell you who did this?

[Lacus nods against his shoulder and steadies herself. It will be fine. Somehow.]

His name is Spike. He comes by Merlotte's quite regularly, and I believe he works at the Blood Shack.

[There's more she would say, if she thought it would make a difference. Instead she just slides away from the embrace and resumes rubbing his shoulders and hopes she won't be cleaning up his blood in the near future.]

[It's different than it is with him, though. Because her guilt is very much based in reality. She knew Spike was dangerous, that he's a friend of Tyki's. She knew all that and still let her guard down.] I didn't plan it, but I wasn't thinking as I should have.

There's a great many things I could have done differently, to prevent this. I keep trying to believe this is like home and that things will work out. I studied self-defense but I never wanted to arm myself because I wanted never to have to use a weapon.

I should have stayed far away from Spike once I knew what he was. And I should never have let my association with Tyki go on this long. But now I don't know how to get out of it.

It's not only my well-being I'm risking, it's yours too. All because I want to try and change things that maybe can't be changed. Maybe it's selfish of me put my ideals above the people I care about. I just never thought I'd have to make that choice.

[It's not just this incident. She's losing herself and she can feel it happening and she can't seem to stop it.]

[What would Lacus do in a situation like this? There's been a number of times where he had poured his heart out, and she was there to comfort him. It was up to him to do the same in return. Perhaps it was all true -- no, he knows it is, because she doesn't tell him lies. He gets up from his chair and quietly pulls her in for a big hug.]

This was the same kind of problem that Kondo-san had, I think.You're too nice. You want to believe the best of everyone. Even if you know someone is dangerous, you don't let that stop you. You don't want to hurt anyone, even if they would hurt you. You want the world to be the way you think would be best.

[He pats her back very gently.]

I could be wrong. Really wrong. I don't know much about anything, anyway. I'm not good at this stuff like you are. But... I still don't think you did anything wrong, in any case.

[The embrace and the words are more meaningful than he could know. It's not easy to have faith in yourself in a place like this, that keeps beating you down. Just hearing that Sougo believes in her is enough to make her think that maybe she doesn't have to go down that road. That this place doesn't have to change her.]

[She hugs him back, exhaling slowly. Pushing those frightening thoughts as far away as she can.] I think you're very good at it.

I'm not very used to doubting myself. So I'm glad you're here to help me. [It doesn't make everything better, only she can do that. It helps, though.]

[She hangs on for another moment, so she can be certain she's smiling instead of crying when she finally pulls back. Being attacked has dredged up far too many feelings.] You've done just as much for me.

Most of me knows things will be fine, somehow. I'm not so used to there being a part that wonders, even a small part. [She puts her hand on his cheek, that same pose they always come back to when one of them needs comfort.] If you need to talk to Spike, or... something else... I'll worry a little, but I trust you. Just promise me you'll come home to me and I won't let myself feel guilty anymore.

What if we watch some TV on the sofa? If we happen to fall asleep, you'll be right there if I need you. We could even have Pink guard the door and raise an alarm if anything happens.

[When he asks like that, no way could she say no. But fortunately there'd be no need to, she always has energy to sing.]

[Lacus turns and reclines so he'll be more comfortable, still able to rest his head on her without hurting his neck.] All I need to sing is a reason and a happy feeling. You've given me both.

[So she sends Pink to watch the door and begins gently singing. Its the song she sang to her orphans when the remains of Junius 7 crashed down, something to let them know that everything would be alright. It seems fitting now.]
