230 - [ action ] - open
[Oz is sitting at the beach in Sector One. It’s one of the first times he’s ventured out and about since that class about werewolves and how to kill them. Right now he’s sitting in the sand close to where the surf is coming in, his pants are rolled up so that the water just hits his feet and ankles before receding again. He’s leaning back on his palms, eyes closed, face turned up in spite of the overcast sky. He looks very calm, as always – very peaceful, as always. But also, as per usual, what’s on the outside doesn't always match what’s on the inside with Oz.

He’s enjoying the quiet and his solitude. But he won’t turn away anyone who might come across him.

[Don't be too freaked out, Helen. But he smells you before he sees you. He also senses the indecision in whether to interrupt or not. But knowing it's a friendly sort of person, he's glad when she decides to speak up.

He partially squints over to her. It isn't sunshine but opening his eyes in the daytime is still letting the bright in.
] Oh I'm a burner. [Pale skin and red hair will do that. But having been a hermit for several days, he's still enjoying the day out.] I promise not to enjoy the irony for a burning amount of time though.

[ that actually makes her laugh as she approaches. good one. she needed that. ] I wouldn't blame you if you did.

May I? [ she indicates a space close by but not so close as to be in his personal bubble. ]

Shared irony is definitely better. [He nods, a sign that yes it's okay for her to join him. After she's comfortably seated, he speaks again.] This is one of the best thinking spots.

I always thought so myself. [ she takes a seat carefully, turning her attention to the water, even though she speaks to her companion. ]

It's been a long time since I've been near an ocean without having been stranded or taken hostage. [ she says it casually, but it's definitely something on her mind lately. ] Perhaps I should change that.

[He might smirk here if he were prone to smirking. Her life seems as interesting as his in that maybe it's too interesting.]

You should. There's a lot less dangerous beach time to be had. There's contemplation, introspection, meditation. And don't get m started on those tricky sand castles.

[ always, but she would much prefer that to being idle. ]

I haven't meditated in decades. [ not entirely true, but close enough. she hasn't properly meditated anyway. it's just not her thing. she can't keep her mind from wandering and dragging up things she needs to get done or worries about other occurrences or that shipment she needs for the enclosures or what abnormals are being transferred or the latest disturbance in old city or london or somewhere else. she's always going a mile a second and meditating just never quite... worked for her.

but good for oz if that's his sort of thing. ]

Ah sand castles, forever changing on the tides of fate. I should think that would count as dangerous enough.

The ultimate danger. The home insurance is sky high.

[ He turns to look at her, his eyes sparking with a hint of an amused smile in them. ]

So you've been okay?

I would imagine so. Nasty habit of destruction and flooding.

[ his brand of humor has never failed to make her laugh and after her thoughts about titanic and 1912, she's definitely needed a good laugh. ]

As well as can be expected in prison. Certainly not the worst few days I've ever had. [ not the best, either, but that's neither here nor there. ] What of yourself? I hope the last few days have been good for you.

[ The amusement in his eyes fades away, a hint of the turmoil inside shining through. It's the only hint too. Oz isn't much on emoting most of the time. ]

I've had worse days. Mostly I've been pretending to be a hermit. [ He pauses. ] Hermits are much cooler than you'd think.

[ oddly enough, she can read the slightest variation and while she might not know what's causing it, she understands what it is. in some respects, he reminds her of her old friend, except more human and less sasquatch. she's certainly known people who have said less than oz and spoken more in what they haven't said. ]

They are. But I often find that even hermits need people they can trust.

[ it's an opening if he wants it, an opening for him to tell her anything if he wants to. she won't judge.

she tilts her head back to drink in the air around them, as much to wait patiently for him to answer as to give him a reason not to share more than he's comfortable with. ]

They do. [ He agrees, thinking of the trust that was recently broken, a broken trust that had sent him into hiding. ] Sometimes hermits trust the wrong people. Bad character judgement is a thing.

[ she understands that one, far too well. perhaps not in the same sense, but she's more than understanding of this sort of thing. ]

I think that's unfortunately true of everyone at one point or another. Time can patch up the crumbling sand, but it's up to us if we leave it or help rebuild.

[ it's a buried offer, one that suggests she's one of the "us" involved, trying to decide if she's going to rebuild her own castle or not. ]

Hard to leave when you're in a cage. Fewer options. [ Because while he'd initially been very glad there were no cages here, he's come to realize that this entire place is a cage with nowhere to run. ]

[ she glances at him at that, sensing that there's more to this than she knows. she wants to help him, treat him as any member of her sanctuary, anyone who would ask for her help. so she falls silent for a moment, turning her head back so she's not looking at him again. she does, however, reach up with one hand to rest it against his shoulder. it's brief, but she hopes it will help reassure him. ]

Sometimes... living your own life can be a cage. A lot of life is dealing with cages. Cages and the people in them. We're all in this one together, though some seem more complacent about it than others. We are what we make of this, we are who we choose to be.

[ she drops her hand back to the sand, shifting it up to a pile. ]

If you'd like. I'll help you rebuild this sandcastle. I think it could use a little work.

[ whether that's a metaphorical sandcastle or the real one she's proposing is up to him. they could simply play around in the sand, but if it helps distract him, all the better. ]
