230 - [ action ] - open
[Oz is sitting at the beach in Sector One. It’s one of the first times he’s ventured out and about since that class about werewolves and how to kill them. Right now he’s sitting in the sand close to where the surf is coming in, his pants are rolled up so that the water just hits his feet and ankles before receding again. He’s leaning back on his palms, eyes closed, face turned up in spite of the overcast sky. He looks very calm, as always – very peaceful, as always. But also, as per usual, what’s on the outside doesn't always match what’s on the inside with Oz.

He’s enjoying the quiet and his solitude. But he won’t turn away anyone who might come across him.

[While she's staring into the horizon, he looks over to her, trying to gauge whether she could actually kill that many people. But then he knows all too well how one single decision could shape the world. It didn't take weapons of mass destruction or a holocaust. It sometimes just took one decision.

He also gets that she's confiding in him. He's a good person to confide in because he keeps things very close to the chest.
] How was it your fault?

[She laughs bitterly.] I thought I was helping. I was wrong. There was this man at the end of the Universe. A professor. Real nice you know? Old and bumbling. Sweet. And he had this watch. But it wasn't a watch. It was a chameleon arch thing that held his alien conscious. It sounds mad. I wouldn't have believed it if it weren't for the fact I'd seen the thing work before. And so I showed the watch to him. I thought he'd want to know. I thought my friend would want to know he wasn't the last of his species. So I showed the professor the watch.

His alien conscious was a monster. He went back in time and through the use of some sort of mild hypnosis, managed to get himself elected Prime Minister. I was going to vote for him. Then he kidnapped my family.

[Martha finally looks back at Oz, sees him studying her, and steadies her voice. It's just a story. Like all the rest.]

We tried to stop him before the election results came in. But he captured us. We were pretty well beaten. His first act as PM was to kill the president of the United States. Then he decided to kill one tenth of the world population. I escaped and, when he wasn't busy enslaving the human population, he was busy killing everyone who helped me.

Japan was the worst. A whole country gone because of what I did.

Tom... the first time I met him, he ran in front of me to keep the Master from killing me. And I didn't even flinch.

I saved the world and we reversed time so it never happened.

[She looks confused as she says it.] But I remember it all. Every person I held who died. Every person who did what they could to help me on my way. Every person who stood between me and certain death. All because I showed a man a watch.

[He listens, trying to envision everything she's telling him. Strangely, with the things he's witnessed and been a part of throughout his life, her story doesn't seem so far-fetched or unbelievable. It just sounds like life, like something horrible that came from one choice.

Her own guilt over what happened weighs heavily in the air between them. And Oz can understand it all too well. She may not have committed many of those acts herself. But she feels that it was all her fault because it stemmed from a decision she made. He gets that.
]

It isn't often there's a do-over. And even less often that a do-over happens and someone remembers what no longer occurred. It explains the weight on your shoulders that I didn't understand before.

I give Atlas his meal breaks.

[The joke falls flat though as the sentiment rings true. The whole weight was made heavier by her failed engagement with Tom.]

Does your Atlas need any friends?

[Dry humor answered with dry humor. He'd like his Atlas to go on a meal break with her Atlas. That would be nice. He doesn't tell her that none of it was her fault, that she couldn't have helped it. She's probably heard all of that before. Just like he's heard that what the wolf does is out of his own control many times before. None of those platitudes make it any easier. Sometimes it's just nice for someone to know and not judge one way or the other, just be a friend about it all. And that's what he does here with Martha.]

Maybe that's why we're always holding up our respective worlds. They met and decided we were idiots to give them a break so they skipped out on us.

I started helping people because of a broken arm. Now it's to pay a debt. And because I don't know how to help myself.

Usually when I can't help myself, my friends step in. Then there's that vice versa thing. And you have me in the vice versa.

[Her smile is quiet when it comes. In fact, her head barely turns to look at him. But there's a lift of the corner of her mouth. Her hand reaches out to take his.]

It means a lot. Thank you. And if you need me in your own vice versa...

[His eyes smile again when she holds his hand. Oz wears his emotions in his eyes when he shows them. He holds her hand in return. And after a moment, he whispers some words very quietly.]

I'm a little bit scared. [It's an admission he wouldn't normally make, but a statement of fact nonetheless. He's very much shaken up. And just when he thinks he's not, it comes back.]

[Her hand squeezes his ever so slightly at his words.]

Of people finding out?

[It's the only thing she can really think he would be afraid of. And she was at the class Sam taught about werewolves.]

Oh I'm gonna be more careful of people finding out. [ Sam's class had burned him big time in the trusting people here department. ]

But back home, the world was big enough to find a place to live peacefully, big enough to run if things got bad. [ And they had gotten bad a few times. ] Here... there's nowhere to run if things get bad. I have no pack. My only choice is to fight back and I don't... the wolf will kill. And I don't wanna hurt anyone.

[Martha doesn't have a solution to that. In fact, she's not so sure she would do anything other than run away if he were to turn. As much as she's come to think of Oz as a friend, she can't help but be a little afraid of him.]

And there's no way to counter it when things get bad?

[Probably a stupid question. She was the brunt of one of those things gone bad...]

[ Oz shakes his head. He's back to thinking it might be best if the things Sam taught actually happened. As much as he despised the kill first ask questions later mentality, he was trapped in here with people who were food to the wolf. Of course they saw him as a threat. Of course they were scared. ]

[Martha remembers Buffy from one of Sam's classes. The woman had seemed capable of plenty last Martha had seen.]

And how much time do you have between awareness of things going bad and... the wolf? Or does that change?

It depends on the situation.

[ There were, of course, a lot of factors that went into it. And while now he felt absolute control over the wolf again, he was still playing it extra careful. It was best to play it safe in case something happened to sway the emotions of the population again. ]

But I'm playing it extra safe... since the emotions mess. You don't have to worry right now.

I was less worried for myself and more worried about if we could come up with a plan. LIke, you call Buffy the moment things feel weird.

[She actually turns her body to face him.]

And I don't mean that in any bad way. I mean it because I want to make sure you are alive at the end of whatever happens.

She's always on speed dial.

[ For a long time back home, that had been somewhat of a security blanket for him, knowing he could call and the rest of the scoobies would come running. That was until the wolf had started to take over everything that was him. He'd had to set out on his own, find answers, a way to control and keep the human parts of him in tact. Obviously that option had always been there though, and had eventually gone both ways since when he was pulled in here there had been a Slayer army on his doorstep, enlisting him and his pack into a war against some mysterious entity. ]

It means a lot that you care though. Most people just seem to be afraid.

Fear is allowed. If you allow the fear to overpower you and make you stupid, well, then it's not so useful anymore.
