[Oz is sitting at the beach in Sector One. It’s one of the first times he’s ventured out and about since that class about werewolves and how to kill them. Right now he’s sitting in the sand close to where the surf is coming in, his pants are rolled up so that the water just hits his feet and ankles before receding again. He’s leaning back on his palms, eyes closed, face turned up in spite of the overcast sky. He looks very calm, as always – very peaceful, as always. But also, as per usual, what’s on the outside doesn't always match what’s on the inside with Oz.

He’s enjoying the quiet and his solitude. But he won’t turn away anyone who might come across him.

[ sookie takes a seat next to him, unannounced and without asking permission to do so. it's not an unkind gesture -- in fact, it's quite the opposite. there's turmoil boiling from him, and she was practically sideswiped by it as she was walking by. how could she not stop? she's found that although people don't always like her overhearing or picking up on things they're keeping to themselves, sometimes it does them a lot of good to talk about what they otherwise wouldn't. (not that she's pretending to know what's going on in oz's head, as she's staying out, not even trying to see if she can get in past the emotional whiplash from a moment ago.) ]

Something on your mind?

[It's been a good while since he's spoken with Sookie. So he isn't bothered by her sitting down next to him. And he will not be commenting on how similar she and Rogue look. But as he's such good friends with Rogue, it almost makes him feel too comfortable around Sookie.]

Loaded question. I wonder if anyone ever actually has nothing on their mind. Is anyone ever a mental blank slate? Cause... I bet they get a lot of sleep. [And sleep is not something he's been doing well since everyone got the 'how-to kill werewolves' from someone Oz had confided in, someone he had considered a friend.]

Vampires are. They've got thoughts, sure, but I can't hear any of them. They're just... blanks to me. Quiet. I get nothing. [ a shrug, because she no longer shies away from talking about this, from letting people know that she's got this extrasensory ability that clues her into things they may not want her to know should she choose to take a peek. ironic how being here has gifted her with a freedom she doesn't really have back home. ]

Kind of comforting, sometimes. Others... it's just plain weird. Especially when you're used to the noise.

[That actually makes him smirk. Because the vampires he knows have just as much on their minds as most people. But then it also makes him curious about why Sookie can't hear them. And wait a minute, she can hear people's thoughts? Does that mean he has to even say anything? Is she listening to him now? He can't hear her thoughts so there will be no thought conversations.

He casts her a sideways glance.
] You hear thoughts. Cool.

Cool's not the word most would use for it.

[ she could listen in easily, but she's not. sookie's developed quite the set of mental shields over the years, and can deflect thoughts being directed at her if she wants to. right now, she's respecting oz's privacy and not tapping into his head unless he wants her to. ]

General consensus back in Bon Temps is leaning more towards freak.

I'd go with less freak and more useful ability.

[Plus, Oz knows there are worse things. Although everyone has their own cross to bear. Sometimes he wishes he knew what other people were thinking. Except there was that one time with Buffy when she couldn't control it and got overwhelmed. That wasn't cool.] You're probably really good at poker.

Useful to the people who want to use it, but... it's who I am and it's easier to embrace it than live the rest of your life in fear or ashamed of what you are. I used to hate it, and kind of still do, but in a way, I guess, you could say that I'm proud? Not that I can mindhack someone, but that I'm different, that I'm a part of something that most people don't understand, whether it's because they can't or they don't want to. Ignorance is a problem, and it's always gonna be.

[ she pauses, wondering how much she should say based on that initial feeling of turmoil and discomfort. ]

So is misinformation, like the kind that has people thinking my people are six inches tall, jingle, and make shoes.

Ignorance is a problem.

[He knew so many peaceful wolves back home. His entire pack was just trying to exist in control of the wolf rather than the other way around. And he knew from experience that the same could be said of any supernatural species. There were those hell bent on... hell, and those that just wanted to live peacefully... just like humans. That's why he had a problem with arming the public with the knowledge of how to shoot and ask questions later, so to speak -- how to kill without knowing there were other options to explore first.

He agrees with her about embracing what you are. It was only after he had embraced the freak side of him that he'd learned to completely control it.
] Sweeping generalizations tend to make things that might be difficult to understand easier to deal with. Which people are your people?

[ and she knew peaceful faeries and bad ones. like claudine put up against mab. which... ]

The fae. I'm technically only part, but they're still my kind. I got my telepathy from them, and my light.

Fae. Coolness.

[He accepts it just like that. He's come across fae before but they looked nothing like Sookie. But also, they're from different worlds, so it makes sense that they would be different. And maybe just as there are different kinds of wolves, there are different kinds of fae.]

What does the light do? Self explanatory?

[ sookie holds out a hand, generating light in her palm. it's a bright yellow for the most part, though shades of pink, purple, blue, and even green flit in and out. ]

All sorts of things. It's a fae's greatest weapon.

Cool. [ His brows lift, watching the light that stays stationary in her palm. It's similar to something he's seen Willow do before. But this one has more functions than just light. His supernatural wolfy senses are on high alert suddenly. ]

Plus, weapon. What happens when it touches other people?

[ she knows what happens when it touches other faeries and vampires, but not people. ]

I don't know -- not when it comes to people, anyway. I wouldn't recommend it.

[ closing her hand around the light, she snuffs it and absorbs it back into herself. ]

Vampires do. We're like the ultimate blood delicacy to them.
