Day 228 l Video l Open
[The old man on the screen looks dangerously calm for having just arrived in an undersea prison. Saetan has taken the time to find an elegant, old fashioned looking suit before switching on his communicator. Not only that but he has actually arranged himself in the library, and looks as at home and in control of the situation as if he were in his study. He does not look like a frightened new prisoner, which is entirely the point. He's not someone who is used to being powerless and being held captive is not about to make him change his attitude. When he does speak his voice is like thin ice, dark and cold with something deadly lurking underneath.]

I’d like to speak to someone in authority, immediately. I heard your clever little announcement, and you obviously know who I am. Prisoner or not you should respect me enough to speak to me face to face. I’m going to find where you’ve taken my Jewels eventually, and it would be in your best interest to resolve all of this before I do.

Please elaborate.

[ Annoyed mock-sigh. ] Alright, here's how it works: boy meets vampire. Vampire bites boy. Boy dies. The soul flies out into the great blue yonder, demon moves in, bing-baraboom, here I am.

Got that?

[He does not seem insulted by the tone. On the contrary, you can almost see his heart breaking over the story.] I'm so sorry, puppy.

[ The driest, most disbelieving look you can possibly imagine, followed by a burst of laughter. ]

Sorry? That was the best thing to ever happen to me!

[He smiles very sadly. Death, and the importance of keeping your soul and sense of self intact are all rather areas of expertise for him, and he never likes seeing someone else tear themselves apart.]

You sound like my son. And like someone who isn't going to listen to some well meant advice.

[ He bristles ever so slightly at the comparison — he's no one's son anymore — but keeps it mostly under wraps in favor for punked up bravado. ]

Why don't you try me..? What is this well meant advice you're so willin' to give out?

[Give some of the horrors Daemon had committed during his life it was probably not a particularly flattering comparison to make to anyone. Also he's taking that as permission to hand out advice any time and on any subject now, not that he particularly needs an excuse.]

Just that there is a difference between having done monstrous things and being a monster. I don't just look at actions when I judge the dead in Hell.

[ It's a shame that he prides himself on being a monster, then. Of course, even Spike has a line he wouldn't cross even if he doesn't admit to it. ]

And where would you draw that line? What makes a man into a monster?

Intention and circumstances, in my opinion. People often do horrible things because they have no control over the situation they are in. Its one of life's great tragedies.

[ An amused noise. ] Guess I know exactly on what side I am, if that's how you define it.

Let's just say I've had control over my situation.

Do you? I seem to recall you saying you were attacked and had a demon shoved down your throat. But perhaps they define things differently where you're from.

Attacked. [ He scoffs, but it's not that far from the truth. ] I wasn't attacked... so maybe I didn't go seek her out, but I knew what I was getting. Never regretted it.

Really? [Its a question that could be applied to either one of his statements. Maybe it's a bit odd for a conversation with a stranger to have turned so quickly to morality and free will, but for him its part of the job and something he always finds fascinating.]

[ Good thing questions of morality and free will are right up his alley, then. Usually he takes these regular releases of fresh meat as cheap entertainment, but once in a while... ]

Really. Why is that so hard to believe?

I spent decades considering my decision to become a Guardian before I made the change and even then sometimes I worry it was not enough. These aren't decisions that should be made rashly, for we rarely know what we are getting into.

Well... my type don't get decades. We get seconds if even that. I still haven't regretted it for a second, whether you believe me or not.

Oh yeah. We're all over the place. Actually... the kind that regrets is very rare indeed. Only one known specimen.

You remind me of him a bit, actually. All dark and brooding, ponderin' your immortal soul.

Ah, therein lies the difference I suppose. There are only 3 of us Guardians that I know of and it's a great deal more difficult to become one.

Quite the contrary; I don't give much thought to my own salvation beyond living each day as best I can. I've done a great deal too many unforgivable things to consider. I'm much more interested in the souls of those around me at this point in my life.

Tomatoes, tomahtoes. You both sound the bloody same. And if you're so busy worrying about the souls of those around you, you should be glad you got one less to concern yourself with. Must get awfully busy.

[Very amused.] I'm 50,000 year old, puppy. What else am I going to do with my time?

And that's precisely the reason I want to get back home. My children are nearly all more powerful than I am and also a great deal less emotionally stable. I'd like o contour doing what I can to keep them balanced and as many people alive as possible.

Look, since you bothered asking for my name, why don't you use it. [ Yeah okay, the puppy thing is getting on his nerves. ]

And if you're so keen on getting home, you best be off explaining the whole thing to the wardens. I'm sure they'll understand.

Ah yes, because Spike allows you to be taken so much more seriously.

I rather doubt they will, but my adopted daughter walked into Hell when she was seven years old because she thought I might be lonely. I wouldn't put it past her to find tho place eventually.
