Day 226 l Christmas Party Mingle
[Ianto has, predictably, gone a bit overboard for the Christmas party he and Jack are throwing. The entire apartment has been decorated; there's a tree with gold and silver ornaments and twinkling lights, garlands draped over doorways, candles in every window and festive nicknacks scattered about. It looks like something out of a magazine, and may make visitors a little afraid to actually touch anything. There's also a lot of mistletoe around (one of the side effects of living with Captain Jack Harkness) so it's probably a good idea to keep one eye on the ceiling at all times.

Of course he's made plenty of coffee and some appetizers, so he hopes people really do respond to the invitation Jack sent out, otherwise there are going to be a hell of a lot of leftovers.]

Oh. I'm sorry, I wouldn't have brought it up if I'd known.

At this point I'm not willing to rule out either. They did send some robotic Santas and attacking trees a few years back.

[ He gives a shrug and a smile, as if to say it's no big deal. It's not like it shows or anything. ]

Really? You must have the most surreal job in the world. [ A beat. ] Have you met Sam Winchester? I think you two would have a few things in common.

I often think that, usually right after lecturing coworkers on reasons not to store alien body parts in the refrigerator next to everyone's lunch. And we've spoken once or twice. I'll admit I don't know him too well.

Wow. I can't even imagine what your office parties must be like. [ Still cool, though. One of those jobs that make the FBI look mundane and boring. ]

Boring, and often interrupted. [The chaos that had been Gwen's wedding came to mind.] Honestly I think we're all a bit jealous of what you do for a living. Same amount of intelligence and adventure required, just not as much alien slime to clean up afterwards.

I take it you've never been to a crime scene three days after the fact. Not that we need to clean it up, but... go through one cannibals fridge and you're set for life.

You've done that, too? One of my absolute least favorite cases, for the record.

It's not the most common methodology, but it happens with alarming frequency.

Maybe our jobs aren't as different as you'd initially believe after all.

Really? We've only dealt with that sort of thing once, although to be fair we did assume aliens were responsible, not cannibals. It very nearly ended with me being eaten.

Exciting at first glance but in reality filled with much more paperwork than you'd imagine?

Yikes. [ Good reaction there, Reid. ] And yeah, it's exactly like that. Nothing like coming back from a case to 23 unfilled reports that are due in the morning.

Exactly. Followed by a round of talking your boss into finishing the paperwork he was supposed to have done last week.

That I don't need to do, at least... although I do have to keep my co-workers from slipping me their paper work on top of my own.

You've had that happen too?

Well to be honest I'm more of a secretary/butler than anything else, so I do tend to get stuck with most of the paperwork.

Ouch. Though I guess it's not so bad if it's already part of your work requirements. [ Smile. ] How did you get that kind of job, anyway?

I worked at Torchwood London, originally, but it was destroyed. I was one of the few survivors, and I didn't really know what to do. I had all that in my head, you know? Watching people die and I just, I don't know, I couldn't walk away. So I moved back to Cardiff and got Jack to give me a job. Had to capture a pterodactyl before he'd even consider it, for the record. [That's leaving out a lot, like only wanting that job to find a way to save his partially converted Cyberman girlfriend, or sleeping with Jack to stop him from getting suspicious or all the people Lisa had killed when she finally had lost control or watching Jack gun her down. That's private, and it's always going to be because she had been too important to him to be reduced to a horror story like that.]

How about you? I'm assuming your job had slightly more regulated hiring methods?

Wow... he drives a hard bargain, your boss. [ Some interview and although he won't pry, Reid suspects that this is just scratching the surface. Call it courtesy between two professionals who's livelihood could be considered at least adjacent to one another. He doesn't want anyone asking him about Tobias Hankel either. ]

Yeah, I guess you could say that... I got recruited at college and joined the BAU at 22. They had to, uhm... bend some rules. I was technically too young.

He didn't much like the London branch.

What sort of work do you actually do for them?

I'm a criminal profiler with the BAU — the Behavioral Analysis Unit. We work with local law enforcement when there's a suspected or confirmed case of a serial killer at large, though we also tend to get called in during child abductions or terrorist activity.

Basically we compile evidence, visit crime scenes, interview witnesses and process the data available to us so that we can put together a profile of the UnSub — Unknown Subject. [ And since so many seem to think this is a desk job, partially based on his physique... ] It's not uncommon that we're on the scene of the arrest either.
