day 226 video; / action;
I was thinking back to the handful of days I've spent here and how I've been spending them. It got me to wondering. I've been keeping track of the days, how long I've spent here and I wanted to know if there's anyone else here who keeps track of the day it would be back home. This is, of course, assuming that the way the wardens keep track of time is the exact same as in your home worlds.

[ She looks thoughtful. ] This place seems to operate on exactly the same number of hours and minutes, though the days don't seem to be much different. No weekends off, for instance. [ That's a joke, people. ] I was simply curious if anyone else had thought about it or if I was simply the odd man out. Today would be November 5 for me. Rather odd, having Christmas in November, though I suppose it could always be worse. We could be moved to a new location on Halloween.

[ For the record, that totally happened. They were moved to Squall on the day that would have been Halloween in her world. The irony was not lost on her.

Action: Today she'll be spending time in various places. The clinic will see her the most, but she will also take a little time to wander around the snow-covered lanes to see if she can find a handful of people among the drifts. Everyone she's met in-person will receive a small card with various good wishes written on the inside in her neat, precise handwriting. For some, she has more:

Euphemia li Britannia - "I do hope the holiday, whatever it means to you, is a good one. Perhaps in the future, you and I can become better acquainted. Until then, I should hope you remain well. Yours, as ever, Helen Magnus"

Jean-Luc Picard - "I've enjoyed our conversations so far. Perhaps the future will hold more. Helen"

Martha Jones - "Take the day off, if you weren't already planning to. Dr. Magnus"

Rebekah - A light blue scarf that will go well with her hair and a note: "I hope all is well with you. Helen"

Rose (TVD) - "The answer to your question is, 'It's a genetic mutation: longevity.' Any other questions?"

It occurs to her that she doesn't know where most of them are, but that's never deterred her before. ]

Yeah, that works. I will meet you there as soon as possible, Helen.

[ her smile is warm and genuine. ]

I look forward to it.

[ it won't take her too long to get there, as she's been out and about today, but at some point soon, she'll make her way over to the kiosk area to wait for rose. ]

[instead of just zipping her way to the kiosk, Rose walks at a normal pace, taking it easy. she does spot Helen at a distance though because of her enhanced sight. it came in handy sometimes.

when Rose reaches her, she gives her a smile and a nod of greeting.
]

Hello, Helen. It's good to see you again.

Good to see you as well.

[ and it really is. her warm smile says as much. she's very glad to see rose. despite her desire to keep herself contained and as off-limits to potential relationships (friendships or otherwise), she couldn't help herself. some people simply drew her to them and she was a social creature to boot. walling herself away was both an instinct and the opposite of what she wanted. ]

If you'd like to ask me other questions, I'd rather do it over tea. [ but she doesn't mind being questioned. now that others are learning a few of her secrets, she's slightly more comfortable with giving them out. ]

I have always preferred a chat over tea. [Well coffee, but details.] It can wait until we get back to my place. Hope you don't mind the smell of smoke by the way. My housemate is fond of cigarettes.

[Said housemate was off somewhere for a while for some reason and Rose missed him. By housemate she meant boyfriend but she was still deciding on whom to tell about her relationship; Helen wasn't the only person with secrets.]

It shouldn't take us too long to get there.

[A little female company wouldn't go amiss and Rose was genuinely curious about the other woman, especially after the note she received earlier. Perhaps she would be inclined to share with Helen what she was and what she had experienced throughout her five hundred plus year existence.]

Not my favorite smell, but certainly not the worst. As long as I have tea, I'll be fine.

[ she appreciates the concern, however. it doesn't go amiss and were she someone with slightly more issue than that, it would be more trouble. she's dealt with worse and honestly as long as no one's trying to blow her or anyone else up or shove coffee down her throat, she can tolerate it. ]

I can manage a walk and talk until we get there. I've spent years hiking before.

[ in a manner of speaking. grave-robbing might be a better term, but it still involved a good deal of walking. ]

Don't worry, I have tea.

[ she acquired it specifically for this kind of meeting because she knew how much Helen liked tea and well, Rose wouldn't be a very good hostess if she didn't cater to her guest's needs; not that she had ever had any guests before but details. ]

Hiking? I'm more of a runner myself.

[ because it was for her own survival, not a hobby she enjoyed. ]

[ the comment about tea gets a smile from her, though. ]

Never was much of a runner unless it involved running to someone, either to stop them or to save them.

[ and usually involved getting beaten up in the process. she's rarely come out of these things without being scraped up in some regard. ]

But... there's a first time for everything, as they say. I only ask for warning before we take up our jog or I might be inclined to protest.

Would never have guessed that.

[Now Helen has given Rose more to ask about whenever they get back to her apartment. She decided before that there was a lot more to Helen than what was on the surface and the other woman's words pretty much cemented that.]

Don't worry, I'd give you plenty of warning beforehand. We won't need to run in this case, considering how close the apartment is from here.

[Sector four to be exact. Rose looks around for a moment to see where they were: sector two now.]

[ there's a lot about herself that she knows is difficult to guess. it's nice to still be somewhat of a mystery in a strange place. ]

That's very good to know.

[ she just smiles in response. running in a place like this wouldn't bode well. something would be wrong and she would rather not have anything seriously wrong to deal with. ]

I'm not particularly fast unless I need to be.

[rose offers a small smile in return, trying not to think about a really bad situation cropping up here. sure, she's in prison but it's a better life than she had back home.]

I get that. Rush around too much and you'll miss a lot. Slowing down can be a good thing.

[ the last thing helen wants is to see another bad situation here. or a worse one. it could always get worse and she was in the mindset to deal with what they had and not expect better or worse. ]

I prefer a good balance. If my life is too slow, I tend to grow bored.

[ she's a problem child. she can't help it. ]

My job doesn't normally allow me much time to be idle, nor do I tend to take that time if I have it.

I made the mistake of never really taking the time for things back home. But I would argue that I had no choice.

[ rose is opening up a little. kind of a big thing since she didn't really do it a lot. ]

Whatever makes you happy, right? Just keep doing what you like doing, Helen.

[ a yes, the issue of choice. ]

I'm assuming this isn't a simple matter of preference. [ aka this is one of those life or death things, isn't it? ]

Seems to be a common theme here at least. No one to talk you out of doing things you like unless it involves harming someone else.

You'd be right in that assumption. [ she liked how perceptive Helen was. Rose will elaborate on it later. ]

That's true. The only ones who seem to take issue with that are the wardens. Perhaps not everything but I suppose they like to run a tight ship.

[ she'd had more than enough time to learn to be that perceptive. it was a skill that had saved her life on more than one occasion. ]

It would seem that way. Deviations that might seem minor to us might be a bigger deal to them. [ not that harming another is "minor" or "trivial" to her, but details. ]

That doesn't surprise me. Even with that in mind, I am going to play by the rules and not risk earning myself a punishment.

[They're stepping into section four now and it won't be long until they've reached the apartment she shared with Spike.]

I certainly can't blame you for that. I wouldn't want to risk a punishment these wardens seem happy to dole out for the smallest things.

[ like littering, for example. ]

The punishments appear to be quite strange sometimes and random. I got one once and I didn't even hurt anyone. Still, they said I broke the rules.

Their rules do seem rather... strict, as though they have nothing better to do than to ensure we "cooperate."

[ there's little need to figure out how she feels about that. the slight scorn in her eyes and tone suggests that she's none too pleased about any of this. ]

I'm not entirely certain how effective their methods are.

[info]justexisting

Neither am I, Helen. What I do know is that I don't want any more punishments if I can help it.

[rose can understand the other woman's frustration because she feels the same way as her. a part of her doesn't want to say it out loud in case the wardens were listening in.]

All these negatives. Is there anything that you like about this place, Helen?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lifelines
2013-07-23 08:30 pm UTC (link)
Understandable. [ she doesn't know anyone who would like that.

the question catches her off-guard for a moment and she takes a moment to think. there's a lot to dislike about being here -- being transported against one's will, taken from their lives and friends without warning, being told they're criminals with a lifetime sentence, among other things. but there's also a lot to be happy about, perhaps even grateful for. ]

I'm not one who forges lasting friendships easily, but I have to say... I've made a few of them I would be very sad to let go of. [ she gives rose a gentle smile, indicating that this is one of those. ]

Yeah, the friendships are definitely one positive. [rose returns the smile easily, understanding what helen meant. she felt the same about her and she hopes that helen realises that.]

I was lucky enough to have a few people I know from home here already but making new connections with other people has been incredibly rewarding.

[she leads them right up to where she lives and rose takes her key out from her jacket so that she can open the door, standing to one side to allow helen to go in first.]

So far I've only seen one person from my world, but he's been enough. He and I have known each other for a very long time.

[ she wouldn't wish this place on anyone else -- even if she really wants will or her old friend or henry or kate to be here with here. she offers another smile as she moves inside the apartment, standing aside once inside and waiting to be shown where to go next. ]

Oh? That's good. Maybe I have spoken to him before; what is his name?

[ Rose says as she leads Helen into a rather spartan looking living room; she didn't have a lot of furniture but it was comfortable and suited her just fine. Even throughout her long life, Rose had never really acquired a lot of personal belongings. ]
