[ there's a walk of shame and then there is a walk of shame. there's no way caroline can get away with it, not that she thinks she should, but her clothes are rumbled and her hair (usually curly perfection) is a wet tussled mess. yeah, she had the decency to take a shower after... well, yeah. she's not ashamed of what happened, she... had a great time but she is ashamed that she didn't really clear that with elena first.

and now came the hard part. the telling elena part. and when she comes into the apartment, she's not sure if elena will be in her room or around the apartment. but she's got take out as if that will somehow soften the whole 'i slept with your ex-boyfriend' blow. but it's the right thing to do, to tell her, especially considering caroline knows it'll be announced to the whole network tomorrow, much to her embarrassment. ]

Elena?

[ caroline looks surprised, honestly, forgive her. but instead of exploding with anger or looking angry, she sort just laughs and shakes her head.] We're kinda a mess, huh? [ it stings but she imagines as much as her confession had stung elena.

but in a way, caroline's realized that you can't help who makes you happy, she's proof of that. so she just smiles softly,] So I guess this means I have to stop trying to get you and Sam together, huh?

[ anger wouldn't have been out of place. elena cares - so much - about how this affects caroline. always has. her eyes search caroline's expression, waiting -

and now elena looks surprised, so forgive her. (she knows this probably stings caroline too. of course it would. and still...) elena lets out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. manages a soft smile too. ] Yeah, I'm not sure it would really work out.

[ she pauses, feels a surge of emotions rising and overflowing, bringing tears to her eyes. it seems natural and inevitable to close the distance between them and wrap her arms around caroline. ] I'm kind of glad we're a mess.

[ caroline's not surprised by the hug, honestly she probably would've pulled elena into a hug too. so she hugs back, letting out a breath. honestly, they've been through too much to not settle things, to let boys be something that comes between them, no matter the circumstances.] Me too. [she lets the hug linger for a moment before she does speak again.]

Except now-- [ caroline pulls back a little to look at elena.] We have to figure out what Matt's hiding. Because the whole thing is hinky and I don't like it. [ time to tag team, elena.] Because he's a mess too.

[ they have. way too much for way too long. and she's just glad they can work with it, past it, however and whatever works for both of them. elena closes her eyes a moment; lingers too.

it's not that she doesn't agree about matt. about this is all very hinky and she doesn't like it either. but... elena pulls in a breath. (matt is a mess. maybe she wouldn't put it like that, but something is eating away at him. something or some things bad.)

she's about to protest, but - she's right. ] I'm worried. [ she pauses. what really hurts is... ] He won't talk to me. I told him I wouldn't push, but I...

I don't want to make this worse. I don't know if I can let it go either. [ because it means letting go of home, of her life there... it means not being prepared to exist here either, when at any moment klaus or something worse could show up. ]

Trust me, pushing won't help anyways. [ because caroline has. oh, she has. she's done every thing she can, guilt trips, begging, fighting with him. ] I don't want to give it up either, it has to be something bad. And I'd rather hear it from him then, like, Rebekah when she throws a hissy fit or Klaus if he comes back and rubs it in our faces. [ and honestly, caroline doesn't like what it's doing to matt, the way it's making him act.]

I don't like him not being on our side and it feels like he's not.

I know he's hurting, Elena. [ she knows matt too, although to elena's credit, caroline has always been the less perceptive one of them both.] But think about it. He's keeping secrets and buddying up with Rebekah? It's her fault you become a vampire, she almost killed him. I'm sorry but she had to have saved a whole burning orphanage of kids and cure cancer to be worth trusting again.

	I don't know either. [ it seems helpless. it can't be. whatever matt's keeping inside... he can't forever. she squeezes caroline tighter, slowly moves back and tucks hair behind her ear. ] I guess we should just... be there for him.
