[ VIDEO; LOCKED TO THE DEFENSE FORCE ]

Can I have your attention, please? I have a few announcements to make.

First of all, if you haven't already heard Derek Morgan is no longer with us. I'll be stepping in as temporary leader for the Investigative Team until a new leader can be elected — if you're interested in the position, come talk to me or Kitty.

Second, all of you who were assigned to the Investigative Team during our stay in Squall are highly encouraged to file out reports regarding our time there. Anything and everything you can think of, even the most insignificant of details can turn out to be of great use later on.

Data, it'd be great if you could come see me whenever it's convenient.

I'll be at the Defense Quarters HQ all afternoon if any of you need any help or have questions. That's all for now.

[ ACTION; OPEN TO ALL ]

[ True to his word, Reid will be at the Defense Force headquarters all afternoon, working away on his own Squall-related intel and pondering how to best report the rather startling discovery they might've stumbled upon.

Later in the evening he can be found in the education center music room, playing a rather familiar piece followed by the second movement of Beethoven No 8 sonata, Pathetique. A little slow and full of stumbles, but the boy tries. ]

Seems like they learned from past mistakes... you have to give them that much. Not that we really could've relied on Sentience's tactics anyway. [ Lacking the necessary keys. ]

What's your take on the wardens, anyway? Have you talked to both of them?

I hate saying this, but I kinda like 'em. [But she lifts her hand after a beat, clearly she doesn't like them enough.]

Tech standpoint, it's an amazing thing-- independent, responsive, self-thinking AI. Kinda had this conversation yesterday, actually. [With Smith, funnily enough.] They have distinct personalities but it's almost like their an experiment, really. Microsoft Sam and his snarky wife overlooking us, y'know?

[ Nodding. It's good to get this kind of input. He's tried to work out the patterns but he's not a techie. ] And compared to Acumen and Sentience?

... Different. [She cocks her head to the side.]

I don't know, I got the vibe back there that they were more warden-like, in construct. Versus now where they seem more defined, self-individualized. From what I grasped there was something special about Sentience though, possibly [fingerquotes] "bad" in the scheme of things-- from his creator's view, whoever they were. I mean, if you jail your own AI, something's up.

[Shrugging.] It's no coincidence that just as he gets back in the hot seat he's ejected again, maybe for being too... humanized? Listening to us too much? Makes you kind of steamed, if you think about it. He showed us too much. Maybe he would've, in time, thought about letting us go. Acumen on the other hand was just an asshole, default authority figure. Perhaps how Sentience was supposed to be, flawless in terms of identifying with people?

I'm not sure really how to compare 'em, I think we've sunk farther down from the possibility of having any say or power over our surroundings though. Unless we can somehow make Veri stop mocking half the inmates, they're not really going to gel. And Consci, by design, lacks even more... [gesture] y'know?

That's what I'm thinking too... the whole story about Sentience being "promoted" just doesn't make any sense, not with how close to the coup it happened or his standing with the Engineers before then. The new ones do seem more... uniform? If you look past their personalities, there doesn't seem to be any moral dissonance. They operate according to the same parameters and the same rules.

That said... I haven't talked to Conscienti yet, but sometimes Veridical seems almost deceptively human. I'm not saying she cares but... you know. It makes you wonder.

[...] You know, if you're polite to her, she doesn't snark you. She can be nice, actually. Or closer to it.

Exactly! So there has to be some kind of... emotion recognition system, right? Her responses are nuanced and eerily appropriate.

Seems like it. The limitations of AI are pretty nonexistent, I think it proves.

But just because she emulates emotions and recognizes them in us is only one half of the deal; AI actually having or feeling emotions is another ball park of debatable possibility. [She hums.] Of course, it's often seen as a flaw too.

[But she's thought about it. It'd be a handy tool, if ever it became possible to forcibly inflict it somehow.]

Like in Sentience... he did seem like he connected with us on a personal level rather than a... a theoretical, I guess. Like there was a level of genuine curiosity and emotion in there.

Asimov would have a field day with this place.

That sounds like a fancy name of someone I should know but don't, [she grins over her coffee cup.] but I'll nod anyway.

I know what'll be on my to-do list.

Speaking of my list-- I gotta invite you and Kitty over for eats sometime. Been meaning to for a while, but well... [She shrugs.]

If you guys don't mind delicious, vegetarian cooking, of course.

No, no... of course not. I'd like that a lot actually, it's been a while since the three of us did something together. [ Ages. Have they even gone out since Kitty's last drink in freedom after the arson? ]

[She sadly can't quite remember.] If three's a weird number I'm all for inviting Garcia too, 'course.

But it'd be nice to chill with you guys. [She misses company in the house, really.]

I don't think three's that weird... and we were friends before we were anything else. [ Although... ] If you're more comfortable with a fourth there, then by all means. I'm sure Garcia would appreciate it.

We'll see how it rolls out.

Anyway, I'm going to go loot the shops for more snacks. Kinda Twinkie'd out. So I'll see y'later, 'less you want me to nab you anything while I'm out?

I'm good, thanks. I should probably get back to work so I don't end up staying here all night. [ Smile. ] I'll see you later, Rebecca.

See y'later, Reid.

[Slight smile, leaving a friend to their work behind a desk looking tired is a familiar thing. She waves, taking her leave and trying to shake off the feeling of back home that erupted for just a second.]
