Day 223 | video - open
[ the feed clicks on, showing a very consternated young woman. and then off. and then on! off! on! off! betty has no idea what she's doing, but there's a switch and she's flipping it back and forth angrily because she can't tell whether it's on or off and didn't pay as close attention to her welcome speech as she should have. ]

Stupid, bloody -- [ off. on. ] -- piece of -- [ off. on. ] -- even is this -- [ off. on, steadily now that she's taken the damn thing off and looked at what she was doing. that helps! but now she looks like she's about to cry and is trying very hard to be stiff upper lip about it. ]

What kind of prison gives you some comic book gadget, anyway? [ she takes some deep breaths now that the battle of the weird head thing is over. deep and calming, leading to an awkward pause as she realizes just what was on that list of crimes. now she's afraid and offended. ]

You know, that list of crimes is a bunch of bunk. If they think building bombs to stop Hitler is a crime then they're a bunch of Nazis!

[ probably (most assuredly) not the best first impression, but the feed clicks off again before she has a chance to fix it. ]

[ helen nods at that. she hasn't met anyone who's been outwardly unpleasant. a few have been difficult, but none have tried to actually harm anyone in her line of sight, so she can deal with the unpleasantness. ]

Indeed. I had expected a lot worse when I heard this was a prison we wouldn't escape from. And if anyone else's list of crimes is anything like mine, I would have thought some would be interested in doing far worse deeds here than I've seen so far.

[ betty only nods her head a little, resigned. a little more resigned than is probably normal for someone whose only admitted crime is working in a bomb factory. ]

Can't say I mind not having to expect worse. Except maybe that giant squid someone told me about.

[ helen would understand. after all, she's got mass murder on her list. the odd thing is that she doesn't deny the truth of her list. most of those were legitimate; they just came with extenuating circumstances. ]

Yes. That wasn't the most pleasant experience, but neither was it the worst of my life. At least you should have a quieter first few days that I did.

[ what had happened was an accident, and self-defense at worst. but betty has the misfortune of being at the mercy of men who are more than willing to paint her as an obsessed deviant freak with a grudge against a man of god, and she'll take an otherworldly dome where she can live out the rest of her natural life over getting hung.

that there's some quiet sounds even nicer. ]

Nothing wrong with a quiet day, Doctor Magnus. Maybe I'll get a chance to find a job to do, start my 'rehabilitation' and all.

Absolutely. At least I haven't seen a shortage of things to do here to keep one's mind occupied. But... if you do find yourself at a loss, you're welcome to visit me once I've gotten my project up and running.

[ assuming she'll be able to really fix the place up. she's hoping anyway. it won't be perfect, but it'll be a start, something to do with her time. ]

Project? If there's any way I can help, you can count on me.

[ it's not a light offer, either. there's not a wide range in her skillset, but whatever she's got that can be useful is there for the using. ]

I'm working on starting a clinic. It wouldn't be much, not what I'm used to, but even a little that can be taken to a fellow prisoner rather than a warden would be ideal. If you know anything about medicine or would like to learn, you're absolutely welcome to join me.

I don't know much, just a little first-aid from back home, but I can roll bandages with the best of 'em.

Well, if you'd like something to do, consider yourself hired.

[ for various definitions of "hired," as there isn't any money that she's seen here. likely for the best, really. ]

[ betty smiles, wide and genuine. ]

Thank you, really. I won't let you down.
