[ the feed clicks on, showing a very consternated young woman. and then off. and then on! off! on! off! betty has no idea what she's doing, but there's a switch and she's flipping it back and forth angrily because she can't tell whether it's on or off and didn't pay as close attention to her welcome speech as she should have. ]

Stupid, bloody -- [ off. on. ] -- piece of -- [ off. on. ] -- even is this -- [ off. on, steadily now that she's taken the damn thing off and looked at what she was doing. that helps! but now she looks like she's about to cry and is trying very hard to be stiff upper lip about it. ]

What kind of prison gives you some comic book gadget, anyway? [ she takes some deep breaths now that the battle of the weird head thing is over. deep and calming, leading to an awkward pause as she realizes just what was on that list of crimes. now she's afraid and offended. ]

You know, that list of crimes is a bunch of bunk. If they think building bombs to stop Hitler is a crime then they're a bunch of Nazis!

[ probably (most assuredly) not the best first impression, but the feed clicks off again before she has a chance to fix it. ]

Doesn't much matter to me, as long as I can have a cuppa.

[ tea heals all wounds and calms all souls suddenly transported to madness. tea is good. the only way to make it better, in betty's opinion, is to combine it with beer and hockey. besides, while i may have been a while since she last ate, hunger is a hard thing to register on top of adrenaline and resignation. ]

I would imagine one of the restaurants would serve some -- I know one specializes in brunch-type dishes, so I would imagine that would be a good place to start -- or perhaps I could meet you at the convenience store in Sector 1 to find out if they have it. Sadly, I'm not perfectly familiar with this location yet, but it's never too late to find out more, is it?

[ she'd invite betty to her apartment, but that's a little out of the way and they don't know each other well enough for it. not yet. ]

[ and neither will betty if she's got the "newbie outfit" still on. they could take care of that, too, while they were walking around. ]

[ once she's dealt with the ai of the day, she'll be waiting near the center of sector 0, her eyes scanning everywhere as she can see, occasionally moving to get a better look around. ]

[ there's a lot of wandering once betty takes the headset off. the layout isn't as quick to navigate as she'd figured, but she manages by just walking forward toward the center and not stopping. the focus was refreshing, but without the constant distraction of people talking right in her ear, she's gotten a chance to settle into the reality of being in prison.

it was not a fun settling, but she's keeping her chin up while she looks for helen in her bright orange overalls. those, at least, are clothes she's used to thanks to work. ]

[ for her part, helen is wearing a long-sleeve dress suit, but the bandages around her wrists are easy enough to see. the large gashes she'd come in with had yet to fully heal and she doesn't want to take any chances with them. however, when she spots the bright orange coking closer, she steps over with a smile to meet betty. ]

That would be correct. You must be Miss McRae. It's a pleasure to meet you in person. [ helen will use a title of sorts unless betty tells her she'd prefer something else. ] I thought we could try Sector 2 first for our tea. [ later they could go with something less orange and prison-like for clothes. ]

Yes, ma'am.

[ head up, chin out, smiling more out of relief and a stubborn need to look upbeat than excitement or actual happiness. she's doing her best to not be just whelmed enough instead of up to her neck and bobbing around in it. she barely even registers the bandages because there are pants, and that is more reassuring than much anything else helen could possibly do. ] I'm looking forward to it.

I don't think it's really sunk in yet. Kinda hard to believe when they give you everything at once.

[ the words come out sounding more sheepish than she'd intended them to be, but there's no changing that now. and there's no explaining that her other crimes are a little worse than going to work every day. best to just follow helen, for now, and cling to whatever familiarity there is to find. ]

And most of it doesn't exactly seem accurate, if those crime lists of theirs are anything to go by.

[ some of it, she'll agree with, but not all. she does offer a bit of a soft and brief chuckle at betty's question. she isn't laughing at the question itself, but at the memory of that day. ]

Oh considering I spent the better part of that day threatening to blow the whole place up, I'd say it certainly could have gone worse.

[ she may sound teasing, but she's really not kidding about that. ]

	The wardens seem to take a rather hands-off approach, from what I've seen so far, but the reactions from my fellows were rather mixed. Honestly, I was quite entertained by a few of them. [ oh hey, look, it's the little brunch place. helen will just order them two mugs of tea, letting betty choose what she wants, and lead the way to a table out of the way. ] (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[ helen takes her time answering, sliding into a seat and sipping at her tea as she debates how best to answer that. in some ways, she could imagine the prison would start to feel "normal." but considering her stint in the other prison, she hadn't had the time to really settle in yet, which was both good and bad. ]

I suppose it would, given enough time. For those who have less pressing matters to return home to, I would imagine it might even become somewhat "normal" to them, a home away from home. Fortunately or unfortunately, as the case may be, I haven't been around long enough for that to happen.

[ the tea is a good distraction, and she sips while helen talks. she sounds so polished, all put together and... smart. betty doesn't know why she didn't notice it before, but it makes sense what with helen being a doctor and all. ]

Well, a place where you don't have to pay for your food or worry about keeping a roof over your head probably has a lot of appeal to some folks.

[ comes from living nearly three hundred years, after all. she's had experiences she doesn't talk about, experiences that have turned her into this person. but she remembers the year betty's come from and how difficult that must be, if that year for her is anything like it was for helen. ]

Indeed, but everything comes at a price. I wonder how they would feel about the rest of the rules and regulations.

They have booze, at least.

[ one can drown ones sorrows about regulations in gin, if they're so inclined. at least that's how betty figures it. ] Even with regulations they've got a leg up on most prisons.

[ it's an attempt at a joke, small and a little off color, but betty is genuinely relieved by the prospect of being able to drink beer while she serves her time. ]

[ helen nods at that. she hasn't met anyone who's been outwardly unpleasant. a few have been difficult, but none have tried to actually harm anyone in her line of sight, so she can deal with the unpleasantness. ]

Indeed. I had expected a lot worse when I heard this was a prison we wouldn't escape from. And if anyone else's list of crimes is anything like mine, I would have thought some would be interested in doing far worse deeds here than I've seen so far.
