Day 223 [video | open]
Oh no! I'm innocent! I didn't have a trial! I was in the middle of something really important, and most of all I hate orange!

[She manages to look adequately distressed, but there is a note of insincerity in the voice.]

I don't know what to do. Tell me how you've been coping.

I'm listening.

My mistake. I'll remember for next time. So, is it true we're underwater?

If the word of our esteemed Wardens and the recent giant narwhal scare are to be believed, we're very much in the deep, so to speak. Amazing what you can do with a little pressure-resistant glass and a couple of force fields, isn't it?

[And by "giant narwhal scare" he means the recent octopus attack. Yes Puck, you've read Jules Verne, good to know.]

Giant narwhal, hmm? Sounds fascinating. [She tries not to seem bored as she says so.]

Tell me more about these force fields. What do you know about them?

Doesn't it just? I'm afraid it's one of those times where the monster attack is the least interesting part of the story. [Ie, fortunately for Smith Puck doesn't find that part fascinating enough to elaborate on, or he would regardless of her level of interest.]

These force fields specifically? Not a thing. [He's done his fair share of setting up force fields outside of this world, but well.] Unfortunate side effect of the wardens' need-to-know basis policy and not being able to take a look at the outside yourself-- or the machinery that keeps this bubble of ours floating, for that matter.

How terribly unfair. You'd think they'd be more transparent in their prison-running.

[He smiles.] Whatever for? Their playground, their rules.

[She can't help but smile at that even though she is reminding herself not to.] That doesn't bother you?

The principle of the thing? Goodness no - power makes the world go round. [It's not much different from how the Third Race functions.] Obviously I don't need to ask you the same question.

[Because she's smiling (and smiling is never insincere, am I right).]

Obviously.

Doesn't it bother you not to be the one in power?

I like to find things to enjoy regardless of what step in the hieararchy [to call it something silly] I'm on.

[It bothers him, but he thinks it's legit that since the Engineers/Wardens are the most powerful, they can do whatever they please.]

You've never thought about taking a walk up to the top step yourself?

As it happens I find positions of power terribly dull; I'm more of a freelance type. [Because for top positions you usually want a more tangible ambition than "having fun".] That's not to say things couldn't be interesting here, given the specific circumstances.

Easier said than done, however, alas.

And who would you freelance yourself to? Someone in power or someone without?

What a question! New ideas, ambitious projects, no hamsterwheels. I'm flexible.

And since it's a favourite subject of mine and I'm always interested in broadening my horizons - let's hear your idea of fun? Do we match? [Not that he thinks many people can teach him anything about having fun.]

I suppose you could say I like learning about different types of people and what makes them tick and maybe figuring out how to make them tock.

[Teehee. His smile just widens. Good thing he's never minded people knowing stuff about him.]

Not a bad answer at all - ties in nicely with your initial question, too. Why, if this place isn't just tailor-made for you, then.

I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone talking to you right now when I say "happy to be of service"~ [He certainly has no qualms with that idea of fun. Or with people who seem not to care at all that they've been imprisoned, for that matter.]

I'm certain you do. Perhaps we'll speak again, Puck. [Did you tell her your name? No matter really. She cut the connection for now.]

[Yeah, he doesn't even have to go over the conversation to know he didn't tell her. Well, that's some more interest points in her direction.]
