When I said I wanted to get out of Mystic Falls for a while, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Ruins of some ancient prison in Italy or China, maybe, but not underwater and in some alien dimension, or however the hell that's supposed to work. [ if he's getting the gist of this right. he's going by video game logic here. ]

And what happened to a trial by a jury of your peers? Is that not a thing on Planet X? Too human a concept for you? Is throwing eighteen-year-olds in prison for skipping a couple of classes back in high school [ and eradicating an entire vampire bloodline via staking finn mikaelson, but shhhh ] just something you do for fun around here?

[ just when things had calmed down and the world was returning to normal (or as normal as the world was capable of getting after everything that happened back home), this happens. it's just his luck, too. nothing ever stayed good for matt donovan. his life sucked, and it looks like graduating from high school meant it was only going to get suckier from here on out. ]

So much for the world tour.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Now aren't you lucky this is a video conversation? [ Good thing Damon's busy cleaning his apartment to want to go and snap a finger or two. ]

Tell me you were planning on leaving Mystic Falls on account of you being bored with the lack of anything interesting happening in town. [ Because that's really what he'd like to hear as opposed to: ooh. there's a big bad in town bent on ruining lives. ]

You graduated? [ Okay. This time? Not an insult to Matt's intelligence (or lack of in Damon's opinion). He hadn't expected the kid to be from so far off into the future compared to -- well, him. And Elena. Then again, Stefan knows more. A whole lot more. And so does Rebekah apparently.

I don't know if anyone's told you yet, but we weren't all taken and brought here from the same time back home.

There are going to be things that Elena hasn't found out about, so... [ He's not about to tell Matt not to reveal anything. He's not about to threaten him either. He's just -- giving busboy here a heads up. ] The last thing we dealt with back home was sending Jeremy off to Denver.

Try to keep that in mind.

[ there's a nod, and then — a look that's hard to decipher as he tries to keep his grief under control. sending jeremy off to denver. matt remembers jeremy as a rotting corpse, and the smell of his decomposing body floods his nostrils in accompaniment to the memory, his stomach churning in protest. he hadn't had the chance to see jeremy while the veil was down, too busy with dodging death by vampire hunter and graduating. which was fine; jeremy spent his time with elena as far as he knew, and that's the way it should have been. he wouldn't have wanted to rob her of any time she had with her brother.

or be the one to tell her that jeremy was dead at her doppelgänger's hands.

he does his best to remain composed, focusing on damon's words and the fact that damon salvatore is being serious. of course, he knows the only reason he's being given this heads up is because elena's involved, but he appreciates it all th same.

numbly, he nods and swallows the rise of bile in the back of his throat. those memories on top of the confusion of being here is a little too much to digest (no pun intended) all at once. ]

Yeah. I'll— I'll do that. [ another nod. ] Thanks.
