Day 221 | Voice
[ Closed to Jane Crocker, Jake English, and whichever cherub is awake at the moment ]

Where are you?

[ Open ]

Who wants to start some hardcore prison barter system? Give me your candy bar for my piece of cabbage or I'll shank you with my toothbrush, etc.

Actually, are we even still calling it "prison"? This place has a more backwater feel to it than MarinaNova, so I feel some slang is in order. "The slammer", maybe? "The clink" implies metal cell bars, so I don't think that's appropriate. "The big house". I don't know, I'm still relatively new to this life of crime shit. Thoughts?

I was considering it.

A shiv's, like, a makeshift knife. You use them to shank people. It's an Earth prison thing -- or at least an Earth prison movie thing.

Understandable.

—but I don't want to "shank" anyone!

We aren't actually gonna shank anyone. It's atmospheric.

[Flatly.] Oh.

...

[And then, with renewed enthusiasm.] I don't see why not, then! Let's make shivs.

Sweet.

Roxy and I are in a cell in the... Zephyr quadrant. She's not up to moving right now, so do you think you could come find us?

I think so!

[Don't mind the soft patter of the headset bumping the floor a few times as she rolls out from under her bed.]

... is she okay?

[ Calliope what are you doing ]

She's going through withdrawals.

[hiding omg]

[But now she is on her feet and on her way.]

Withdrawals? What do you mean?

[ Poor baby. ]

Alcohol withdrawals. Once you've gotten yourself addicted to a drug, taking it away results in some not-so-pretty symptoms.

... do you mean that she's hungover?

Those are basically the same thing in my book.

[ Dirk, you really need to get over this bias you have. ]

Oh! [And the alien completely misunderstands thanks to said bias.]

In that case, it's rather unfortunate, but we can take good care of her!

[ She's drunk so often that he doesn't really see a reason to differentiate. ]

Exactly. And maybe by the time we get out of this joint she'll be a changed woman. [ Dirk stop plotting about your friends' health. ]

"Changed"?

[It's just such a weird wording for a condition she assumed followed without saying: no booze means no drunkenness, and more time means no hangover.]

I don't understand.

Doesn't she just drink it to feel happy?

Alcohol doesn't make you happy. It distracts you from what's making you sad.

I knew she felt bad about a few things, but...

[Calliope pauses to try and get her thoughts in order.]

Can you explain what's wrong with her distracting herself? I mean, I'm sure you agree that she deserves to at least feel okay.

Minor, temporary distractions are fine. You can't wallow in your own shit 24/7. The problem comes when you refuse to ever face your problems. They're still there no matter how much you pretend they aren't.

Because otherwise she'll permanently be in a state of denial. Drinking won't make her problems go away. All it'll do is fuck over her brain and her kidneys.

Sustained, excessive alcohol consumption works wonders on one's health, and I mean that in the worst possible sense. People used to die from it.
