day 219: voice | open
Well, that was unexpected.

[ the very confident and ultimately extremely british voice sounds rather less frightened than it likely should, considering the person attached to it just got told she's in prison for the rest of her life. helen's not really buying that. let them try to keep her here. ]

I have to say -- [ she raises her voice just slightly, as though speaking to the communicator isn't enough. she'd like to catch the attention of the "wardens," if possible. ] -- I usually favor face-to-face discussions, like civilized adults. None of this "enjoy your stay" from afar.

[ she supposes it could be worse. she could be stuck in a prison with addison. she pauses for a moment to internally shudder at that. dear god, if addison's here, she'll probably throw something.

at some point she'll drop the bite to her voice, but that point isn't right now. ]

I suppose the term "extenuating circumstances" means little to you. Allow me to let you in on a little secret: the last time someone tried to hold me hostage against my will, a friend and I blew them up. I'd rather not have the same happen here.

[ and with that, she cuts the communication. bait set. time to see who bites. ]

They do seem a bit stringent. Black and white rules, if you will.

[ it's okay, data. she's not someone who will take out lives unless she absolutely has to. there's a reason she's going around saying she's a conservationist. ]

I might be interested in joining their ranks. I'd like to know as much about this new place as I can. [ for various reasons she won't share yet. ]

[ He nods understandingly and agreeably at her desire to investigate - as far as he's concerned, everyone should be curious to know as much as they can about everything. Ever. ]

It is wisest to develop a thorough understanding of one's situation prior to acting upon it - particularly when placed in a position in which survival is dependent upon those one must confront.

[ Again he pauses momentarily, clearly more to maintain his conversational tone than because he has to. ]

You may wish to speak with those who manage recruitment for the Defense Force; Kitty Pryde and Dr. Spencer Reid. There is a division thereof, the Investigative Team, which is focused on cooperative efforts to further our collective knowledge. I am myself a member of this team.

[ And his tone shifts, polite and introductory. You can basically hear the small nod that accompanies his name. ]

Lieutenant Commander Data.

[ that she can understand and, despite her threat to the wardens, she isn't the type to arbitrarily blow something up just to see what would happen or out of revenge. she won't jeopardize innocent lives. ]

Indeed. I prefer to know as much about any place and situation I find myself in. It's much easier to make educated guesses that way.

[ she pauses to take in what he's saying. ]

Once I have settled in a little more, I believe I shall. It seems like a good way to spend one's time.

[ she hears it, offering a smile and a nod in return, ones that can be easily heard in her voice. ]

Dr. Helen Magnus. It's an absolute pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Commander. [ she'll thank him for his help in a minute. ]

Likewise, Doctor; and you may simply call me Data. I do not believe my rank carries particular weight outside of my dimension of origin.

I tend to call people by the name or title they're most comfortable with. [ comes with having been born in an age where titles were quite important. ]

You may use my first or last name, whichever you prefer.
