day 219: voice | open
Well, that was unexpected.

[ the very confident and ultimately extremely british voice sounds rather less frightened than it likely should, considering the person attached to it just got told she's in prison for the rest of her life. helen's not really buying that. let them try to keep her here. ]

I have to say -- [ she raises her voice just slightly, as though speaking to the communicator isn't enough. she'd like to catch the attention of the "wardens," if possible. ] -- I usually favor face-to-face discussions, like civilized adults. None of this "enjoy your stay" from afar.

[ she supposes it could be worse. she could be stuck in a prison with addison. she pauses for a moment to internally shudder at that. dear god, if addison's here, she'll probably throw something.

at some point she'll drop the bite to her voice, but that point isn't right now. ]

I suppose the term "extenuating circumstances" means little to you. Allow me to let you in on a little secret: the last time someone tried to hold me hostage against my will, a friend and I blew them up. I'd rather not have the same happen here.

[ and with that, she cuts the communication. bait set. time to see who bites. ]

[ on her side, she's studying him and his reaction to see if she can figure anything out. ]

They're only a few cuts, Nikola, nothing to worry over.

[ if she only knew where he was, she'd go to him and stop him. as it is, she might make it a little more difficult for him by moving to a different and less-likely-to-be-crowded location on the beach. ]

"When I said stay, I meant stay. Not decide to go for a swim and make me play bloodhound."

He hadn't been too happy when he arrived at her presumed location and had found hide nor hair of her. Infuriating woman. The fact that she was injured and had been bleeding made it easier to track her down, but he hadn't enjoyed having to follow the smell of her blood across the dome to her.

"Sit," he commanded, pointing at a boulder half buried in the sand.

"At least I know you still can," she responded cheekily. The command earned him a stubborn refusal to comply for a minute, but then she obeyed, glaring up at him as she settled on the boulder.

"Are you enjoying this?"

What she was actually asking was if he was enjoying ordering her around like a child, but it could also mean that she was asking if he was enjoying his stay in the dome, playing medic to a doctor, or something else entirely. Really, it was up to him to interpret her words.

Nikola knelt beside her, a wad of gauze held in one hand as he gently pushed aside her hair with the other so he could dab at one of the scrapes on her cheek.

"You interrupted my vacation," was the answer he provided her with.

Helen flinched at the touch, not because she didn't trust him, but because it stung. There were likely shards of glass or metal buried in her skin from the plane and the window.

"However shall I make it up to you?" she asked, voice dripping with sarcasm as she resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

"Shh," he urged, attempting to silence her. His magnetic mind had picked up on those metallic fragments, and he held her chin steady in one hand while he slowly—gently—pulled a tiny sliver that had embedded itself near her cheekbone out without so much as having to dig at it with a scalpel.

Blood trickled down the side of her face, and he swiped his thumb across it, sticking it in his mouth before he turned and reached for the first aid kit again.

Fragments from the plane that had exploded. Her plane that the people holding the island hostage had hit with an EM pulse to get it to stop shooting at them. So instead of getting a very powerful plane, they'd gotten a face full of fire as it blew up and took them with it. Idiots.

Helen barely managed to avoid flinching this time as he pulled the fragment out and she would have made a comment about his bedside manner if she hadn't noticed how he licked the blood off his finger. "Please tell me you've had a dose of your serum recently." Not that she thought he might be on the verge of losing control, but she would much prefer not having to worry about how he was doing.

Nikola shrugged, tilting her head to the side so he could fish out a piece of glass as gently as he could with a pair of tweezers he'd fished out of the kit. He didn't have a surgeon's touch, per say, but his hands were as steady as one's, given his line of work—drop in too much of the wrong chemical, have two wires brush that were never meant to touch and it was all over.

"Can't say that I have," he answered cooly, setting the tweezers aside once the glass was all the way out. (Another drip, another swipe, another taste.)

He seemed to be making her bleed more than hew as cleaning her up, but she knew as well as he did that those glass shards and slivers of metal would have to come out before healing could begin. Nikola was intending to tend to the areas she couldn't easily take care of herself. Once her face was done and he'd examined her neck, shoulders, and what she'd let him see of her back, he'd hand the kit over to her and let her finish the job.

Helen waited patiently for him to respond, allowing him to move her head so he could pull out the shards of glass. They both knew the pieces would have to come out sooner or later and seeing as she couldn't do it herself, he was the only other option and that meant relinquishing control, something she didn't do easily. Her jaw tensed at both his words and the second taste of her blood, fingers curling around themselves as she resisted the urge to smack his hand away.

"Nikola," was all she said in response, a not-so-friendly warning that if he got too carried away, she was more than willing to hit him for it. Once he'd finished with what she couldn't reach herself and examined her back -- which had fortunately been protected by her dress and the small duster she'd been wearing -- she took the med kit from him. Resting it on her lap and opening it up, she shot him a look that clearly asked if he was all right to be near her and if he'd done anything about his blood lust recently. As usual, she was amazed at his control, wondering vaguely how long he'd been off the serum and how badly he was doing without it. From what she could see, he was doing all right, better than she would have expected. Good. The last thing either of them needed was for his blood lust to get the better of him.

Nikola allowed her to take the kit, holding up his hands in a traditional sign of surrender. He stood, crossing his arms over his chest, looking down at her in a mixture of annoyance and disappointment. "Relax. If you're wondering whether you're going to have to kick me and run, you're not. I'm fine. I've been feeding on what's on tap, and am in complete control of myself, serum or no serum."

Though he'd be lying if he said he was comfortable being off of it. He spent the majority of his first vampiric run on the stuff and being off it was strange. Of course, being a revamped ex-vampire was strange in and of itself, and he'd had time to learn how to keep himself in check—though she would be the first to know if he felt any sort of inkling to go flying off the rails, so to speak.

"Frankly, I'm insulted you'd ask."

That told her all she needed to know without saying anything about his vampirism in case someone was near enough to hear. This place had a blood supply and he could use it in place of the serum, for better or worse. She let her hardened gaze drop to her work as she cleaned her arms and wrapped bandages around the worst of the gashes.

"You're insulted that I would care enough to check on you? It's been quite a while since I've seen you." Years. Decades. This is the first time she's spoken to him as Helen Magnus in over a century and it's a bit strange to get used to.

It not only had a blood supply, but a steady vampire population to go along with it. Nikola had befriended one of them—as much as he were capable of befriending anyone, that is—and had gotten away with obtaining blood without needing to make an appearance at the afore mentioned bar by having Rose bring it to him. He likely wouldn't supply Helen with this trivial little detail unless pressed to give it up.

"Yes, though I am flattered you consider a handful of weeks a while. Miss me that much?"

If she ever did find out, she would want to meet this Rose who had befriended the very difficult Nikola Tesla. As it was for the moment, his words made her pause and she looked up at him in confusion. He wouldn't have known about her trip through time back to 1898 London, as she hadn't told him yet, but it had been more than a handful of weeks. What was he going on about?

"More like months," she corrected, making the conscious decision to keep him in the dark for a little longer as she returned her attention to wrapping her arms.

He may not know about that particular trip of hers, but he was well aware of the temporal phenomenons happening underneath this dome. Though he wasn't particularly fond of the notion, he wouldn't be surprised if Helen were from a point in time before or after him—though given her lack of threats and the fact that she didn't seem surprised that he was a vampire again, he'd bet on later.

"You did," Nikola said with a grin, pointing at her. "You missed me. Helen Magnus, what have you been getting yourself into?"

She couldn't help the roll of her eyes at his accusation, finishing the last wrap and closing the med kit. The concept of missing Nikola was practically foreign to her and she refused to entertain the notion that she might actually have done just that. Even if it were true, she had a Sanctuary to return to. She didn't have time to consider something like that.

"If you're through debating the merits of what I've been up to while you've been gallivanting around god knows where, can you at least tell me what you know of this place?"

And how long he'd been there went unspoken for the moment as she finally stood, offering the med kit back to him as she picked up her communicator and the bag that held her watch in it.

"Ask nicely."

Why? Because he's Nikola Tesla and difficult might as well be his middle name. (Now, at least anyway. He wasn't always like this. Of course, only she and history books are left around to tell that tale. John never counts.)

She gave him a look as she stood up. "Will you please tell me something useful about this place? At least where to get something to wear that isn't bright orange." And is more comfortable because she'd really prefer to not stick out like a sore thumb.

"Already done," he said, bending down to pick up the bag that had been left in the sand beside the boulder while he'd been tending to her. Nikola held it out to her.

Inside, she would find the means to this outfit. Don't look so surprised by his accurate size estimation.

Which wasn't telling her anything useful about this place. Yet.

She glanced at him warily for a moment before taking it and looking through the contents. A part of her is touched that he thought to get that for her, even though she knows he probably partially got it for the eye candy, and part of her is amazed that he got the size right. And then there's the part that's well aware of just how not useful he's being.

"Just as infuriating as you are helpful."

Which was her way of telling him she knew he wasn't telling her anything remotely useful.

"Took a visit to Sector 3 before you came to get me?" Yep, someone told her about that place, though she wouldn't put it past that informant to have given her something false. Either way, Nikola might feel useful enough to give her information she could work with for that tidbit.

"Hard not to do when they give you an open line of communication," she replied, taking his answer for what it was. By now she knew him well enough to be able to read what he meant by that. Her assumption had been correct. "Not quite. Just that we're well below sea level and there's not much to do here."

"No-one told you about the tentacles then. Hmm."

Informative, wasn't he? In his own way. Nikola had been quite intrigued by the sight of ginormous tentacles lingering just beyond the dome's walls, which lead to questions such as—

"Can I even be drowned?" It was a legitimate, though perhaps a little disjointed, thing to ask.

"The what?" That'd be a no. She'd been oblivious to those and wasn't really sure she wanted to know.

"I should hope we never need to find out the answer to that," she replied, fixing him with a pointed look. Despite her annoyance -- both with him and her last few hours -- she really didn't want to find out the answer to that question, particularly not if it was a "yes."

"Tentacles. Like that vampire squid of you're so fond of that was so aptly named." Clearly, he doesn't think very high of the name it received, given how little it actually has in common with actual vampires. "There were some near the outside of the dome the other day. Couldn't see much of them beyond their shadows, but it was quite the sight, if I do say so myself. Makes you wonder what else is lingering down here with us, two thousand leagues under some alien sea."

She ignored the quip about the vampire squid's name, knowing full well that he would never like it. There wasn't much she could do about it. She hadn't named it, after all. "A lot, most likely. I'd like to see if they're still around." Perhaps she could identify them and if not, she'd certainly like a look at them. "The tentacles and whatever is attached to them. I don't think they would be there accidentally. Have they been around for long?" He might not be able to tell her much, but she had to try. Curiosity and all that.
