day 219: voice | open
Well, that was unexpected.

[ the very confident and ultimately extremely british voice sounds rather less frightened than it likely should, considering the person attached to it just got told she's in prison for the rest of her life. helen's not really buying that. let them try to keep her here. ]

I have to say -- [ she raises her voice just slightly, as though speaking to the communicator isn't enough. she'd like to catch the attention of the "wardens," if possible. ] -- I usually favor face-to-face discussions, like civilized adults. None of this "enjoy your stay" from afar.

[ she supposes it could be worse. she could be stuck in a prison with addison. she pauses for a moment to internally shudder at that. dear god, if addison's here, she'll probably throw something.

at some point she'll drop the bite to her voice, but that point isn't right now. ]

I suppose the term "extenuating circumstances" means little to you. Allow me to let you in on a little secret: the last time someone tried to hold me hostage against my will, a friend and I blew them up. I'd rather not have the same happen here.

[ and with that, she cuts the communication. bait set. time to see who bites. ]

Gain points and they'll give you a bomb? [ yeah she sounds disbelieving. what kind of place is this? ]

No! No, no, no, don't ask for a bomb. They'd probably say no. [They might say yes.] That's silly. You could ask for a horse instead. That would be better. No one ever exploded from riding a horse.

I think I'll pass on both, if it's all the same to you. [ she would trust a bomb in her own hands. she wouldn't trust it in the hands of anyone else, especially not whoever is "in charge" out here. ]

Mm, sure. You could just ride the horses in the stables anyway. [He pauses, realizing he forgot something.] Oh, and I'm Yuuri. Hi.

[ she has so many feelings on this place right now and she hasn't even been here ten minutes. ]

...Dr. Helen Magnus. Don't suppose you could tell me the quickest way out of here? [ she's not expecting it. her life is never that easy. ]

Oh, wow, a doctor. That's great! We haven't had a doctor in awhile. Oh, unless you're a doctor of random things like poetry. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but we have one of those. I don't know what his is in though. It might not be poetry.

Uh...and so far we don't really have a way out.

[ she's reminded of charlotte and the "doctor of ass-kicking" comment and her voice softens slightly, losing a little of its bite. ]

I am a medical doctor, yes. Can't say I've ever delved into poetry, so you're safe from that. I would need another lifetime and a skillset change for it. [ it's a small attempt at a joke to lighten the tension a little bit, for them both. ]

For now. [ she's not taking that as a formal end-all answer. ]

Mm! For now. [He smiles. She can't see it because it's an audio feed, but it's there.] I've been here almost the longest—since Day 10, but I know we'll all get home again. It's important. [He doesn't have as much faith in his own optimism as he did when he arrived, but it's still strong. If there is something he has a lot of it's the belief that things can always get better.]

Until then I bet everyone will be really happy we have a medical doctor. It's kind of weird going into the hospital with only robots. Of course some of us can heal people too, but that's different.

It's been a while, I see. [ well, better for someone to have that optimism. helen's known for the determination to make it happen. ]

Robots in the hospital? Oh that won't do at all. I'll have to see about that. [ well, if she's here, she may as well put herself to good use. ]

Yeah, I mean, there are robots everywhere. They cook too! [He likes that part. He was rather used to his Mom cooking or the maids in the castle.]

I'm not so certain I would trust a robot to do my cooking.

[ she'd rather have a sasquatch do it, apparently. ]

But that's good to know, regardless. [ she offers a soft sigh. well, if the way out isn't immediately apparent, she'll just have to go looking for it. ] Your help is most appreciated.

They haven't poisoned me yet. [He smiles and again it is wasted!] My Mom used to be here though, so I didn't eat things the robots made all the time and Zero cooks some now. [Are you taking notes? You are learning so much right now.]

You're welcome though.

[There's a pause.]

The first day isn't the hardest, but it is one of the hardest. It gets better. [And then worse again. And then better again?]

Good to know. [ with this woman? note-taking is a given. ] And hopefully they won't. I would hate to find my first day here full of patients suffering from food poisoning. [ and that? that is a teasing joke, a sign that she's relaxing. ]

I suppose I have a lot to learn. [ she won't be admitting that again. normally she's the one doing the teaching. ] Can't hurt to start early, can it? [ her voice has dropped almost all of its earlier bite, and she's working on at least giving him the benefit of the doubt. ]

[Another laugh without the nerves from before.] That would be bad, but it would be good timing for us I guess. I don't think I could help everyone. [Yes, help. It's a thing he does.]

This is a really good place to learn stuff though, and I don't mean because we have a school, but we do have a school. [So there's that.] There's just a lot of different kinds of people to meet and a lot of strange things happening. [Which is his favorite learning experience. He'll take adventure and making friends over books and tutoring any day.]

[ she likes people who help others, so he just won himself a couple of points in her book. ] What do you do to help? [ is he a nurse or a healer or what? ]

Ah, gaining experience with a lot of different backgrounds is certainly a learning opportunity I won't turn down.

Oh, well, I use magic. Demon magic. [Which probably makes it sound better and more believable, right?] I'm not sure how it works exactly. It just does.

[ she's just... going to smile and nod at that. magic is not a word she believes in. ]

Healing abilities of any kind are useful. I should hope it's put to good use.

I should probably let you do new things like find a place to live and meet everyone else.

[ she's actually just putting on a face here and sticking with it. she doesn't tend to blow things up unless she really needs to. and it's usually to save someone or protect something. ]

I suppose so. It's been a pleasure speaking with you. [ and quite informative. he's given her a lot to think about. ]
