218 - [ voice ] - open
[Oz has been hiding away since the loss of control over emotions for everyone in the dome. He’d lost control of the wolf and ultimately hurt people. Badly. That doesn’t sit well with Oz. But having locked himself away for awhile was all he could do before he had to accept his punishment. He doesn’t open a video post. It’s just a voice. The fewer people who see him locked away in a cage, the better.]

Hey. It’s Oz. So… chores. I have to help with three of them. Any takers?

[Martha rolls her eyes. There's so many.]

Well, that resistance I told you about? It's hard to tell your fiance that the first time you met him he died to protect you. Or the nightmares you suffer are from watching billions of people die in a timeline that doesn't exist.

[She pulls out the book about coming back from break-ups from behind her back.]

He left me...

[Martha looks lost for a moment and then looks back at him, swallowing back her tears.]

And... what about you? You seem as though... as though secrets aren't new to you.

Some people can't handle the weird. [Oz agrees. He knows that all too well, given his travels, his search for control over the wolf inside of him.] I'm sorry. [And he genuinely is. He knows how hard it can be to lose people no matter how they're lost.

He nods, slowly. Trying to come up with the best way of saying what his secret is.
] Speaking of weird...

[He pauses again, staring intently at his hand as his palm moves back and forth over the tops of the blades of grass. As always he's completely calm on the outside, barely even emoting. That's just the way Oz is.] I'm a werewolf.

[Martha shrugs away his apology. It's not that she doesn't accept it, it's just she's putting up armor to make the pain stay away. But then Oz continues with his secret. For a moment Martha is absolutely still as what he says sinks in. The whole idea of werewolves still seems like fiction even though she's fairly certain she encountered one. But then it does sink in and she's fully aware her back is to a tree and Oz is blocking her only way out, so now she's stuck and maybe he's not the one who harmed her but she's nervous. But she blinks instead and focuses on his chin rather than his eyes because isn't that what your supposed to do when a dog is staring at you? But he's not a dog he's a human and now she's confused so her gaze flits back up to his eyes where the alarm is obvious though the rest of her seems calm.]

A werewolf. As in... you turn into a wolf at the full moon and then... and then do things...

[Involuntarily she starts fingering the stitches of her arm as she starts working through when he changed last and do they even have a moon cycle here for her to worry about. But she's still sitting.]

[The movement causes Oz to look over to where her fingers touch the stitches. For a brief moment the entire attack flashes in his mind until he looks away again and nods.]

I'm usually in control. Worked hard for it. It's been... a long time since I lost it like that. [He's pretty sure she's putting two and two together.] I'm sorry.

[Martha had been figuring it out, and listening to the subtext he was giving her, it was clear Oz was the one who attacked her. So many questions run through her head as well as accusations and the like. Forcefully keeping herself sitting, she figures out what to say.]

In control through meditation. Focusing the anger yeah? And can you change at will or out of moon phase?

[Because that is very, very important. Her only weapons are a few books and maybe a stick if she's quick enough.]

[Yeah, this is why he tries so hard to keep it a secret except for those he trusts. He tends to lose friends because they're afraid of him. And he can tell Martha is having to work to not pull back right now. His guilt weighs heavily on his shoulders even though none of it was really his fault. His voice is calm and smooth when he speaks.]

The moon always pulls us. But I had mastered a way to control the wolf, to keep from changing unless wanted or needed. It makes the wolf... responsive to negative emotions and adrenaline more so than the lunar cycle. I had control. That day... whatever was released into the dome...

[He trails off and shakes his head.] I lost control. I hurt people.

[Martha will come around eventually. Remember those billions of deaths she just told you about Oz? Yeah, she's responsible for them. It's why she was the one who had to walk the earth and fix it. But right now she's more focused on what he's saying. And really, he is human and he's shown no sign of attack. She doesn't relax per se, but Martha stops looking for an escape and really works on listening to what he's telling her. Plus, Oz wasn't the only one who seemed to have issues that day if the records on the communicators was anything to go by.]

The mastery... that's the bit the Tibetan monks helped you with. And what you use to help others right? So that other people don't lose control.

Yeah. I have a pack at home. We're peaceful. Try to control the wolf instead of letting it control us.

[He shows her some of the tattoos on his arms and trinkets on his wrists, a necklace.] Tattoos and charms and... meditation.

[Another nod. Martha's still afraid. In fact, her pulse is still beating faster than it should. And Oz will definitely hear it. But she wouldn't be a top member in UNIT if she gave into that all the time. Nor would she have stopped the Master. She looks him in the eye before uncurling from the ball she's currently in so she can lean forward and take a closer look. She keeps herself ready to run just in case. But Martha is curious, and it is all so fascinating. Provided he doesn't wolf out on her now.]

The tattoos. I haven't seen any like that before. What do they mean?

[He won't wolf out on her. His control might be shaken because of what happened. But even though he worries he isn't, he's back in complete control.]

It's a mix of mystical symbols; protection, control, entrapment, calming... Together they make for one big cage in the form of... me. Weirdness, right?

[She reached a hand out as though about to trace one of them before remembering her proper British upbringing and the fact that he had tried to kill her a few days ago.]

Weirdness. But fascinating weirdness. And they are usually infallible? Provided no one tampers with... things.

I wouldn't say infallible. They usually help a lot. But I still have to work to keep the wolf in. There are different kinds of wolves. Mine is one of the most destructive. I got bit when I was younger and... it just happened.

[It wasn't something he had chosen, although he had met some people along the way who chose it for whatever warped reason they had to do so. If Oz had his way, he would never hurt another human being for the rest of his life.]

Not all wolves are created equal?

[Well, that wasn't something the mentioned in the legends. And if his wolf was one of the most destructive...]

Is... is the wolf struggling to get out now?

Oh, no. There are quadrupeds and bipeds. Some retain coherent human thought while in wolf form and some don't. Some can shift at any time and some only shift on a full moon. I have several different versions in my pack back home.

[He pauses as if checking past that wall he always has to work to keep up between him and the monster inside.] No. He's quiet. Tired.

[She does visibly calm as Oz confirms the wolf is quiet at the moment.]

And what about yours. What type of wolf is he aside from... destructive?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]taciturnbeast
2013-06-15 10:42 pm UTC (link)
He's destructive, violent, hungry... My mind is barely working when I'm the wolf. It's like I'm awake and can see everything happen but can barely control the wolf's body. Sometimes it's easier to control him when I'm around someone familiar. I can make him see that this person is ours or... we know this person and we don't want to hurt them... The wolf and I... have a very complicated relationship. My wolf is a monster.

[And he sounds very sad about that, because Oz himself is anything but.]

[Martha takes it all in along with a deep breath. But she's watching. And Oz looks nothing like a monster. It doesn't matter how scared she is of him at that moment. He looks vulnerable, and she can't help but to reach out and lightly bush her hand against his.]

[That gesture surprises him. It isn't often that people react that way to all this explanation. So he eventually turns his palm up and holds her hand, a silent gesture of thanks.]

It's why I left home, my life, everything behind... to find a way to control it. And I eventually did. This place keeps messing it up though.

[She stiffens momentarily, not quite ready for him to hold her hand captive. It feels too much like he's keeping hold of her, but he's not gripping or pulling and she does finally let him hold her hand. For the moment.]

I'm sorry they took you away from your life. I don't understand why they would bring someone here and place them in a position that makes them more prone to the behavior that landed them here in the first place.

[He gives her hand a light squeeze before letting go before it gets too awkward or she gets to uncomfortable.]

I don't get it either. Feels very counterproductive.

[Martha carefully tucks her hand back in her lap]

Almost like they're trying to prove to us we really are as awful as they want to make us believe. That we deserve to be here.

[And that right there made her uncomfortable. Because most of the reasons she was here? They involved lots of death for innocent people. She frowned and decided it was time to excuse herself.]

If you'll excuse me Oz, I have a bit of a headache and would like to go lie down.

[She reached behind her for her books and bundled them to her chest as she stood. Martha wasn't sure if she wanted to see Oz again or not. He scared her too much.]

I'll... see you around?
