217 // Criminology Class // Open to all!
[ There's a sense of calm professionalism over the young Doctor today. Sure, there's tentacles in the sky and he's not sure where he's standing with his BAU family just yet but that's what work is for. To be a refuge when everything else is unsure. Needless to say he's happy to be here and will most likely linger extra-long after the lecture. ]

HISTORICAL SERIAL KILLER – The Black Dahlia murder

Instead of talking about a serial killer this time, we'll cover a specific case that has some relevance to today's topic: the murder of Elizabeth Short or The Black Dahlia as the press nicknamed her.

The body of Elizabeth Short was found in the Leimert Park district of Los Angeles on January 15, 1947. Her remains had been left on a vacant lot on the west side of South Norton Avenue midway between Coliseum Street and West 39th Street. The body was discovered by local resident Betty Bersinger, who was walking with her three-year-old daughter around 10 a.m. Bersinger initially mistook the body for a discarded store mannequin. Upon realizing it was a corpse, Bersinger rushed to a nearby house where she phoned the police.

Short's severely mutilated body was severed at the waist and completely drained of blood. Her face had been slashed from the corners of her mouth toward her ears, creating an effect called the Glasgow smile. Short also had multiple cuts on her thigh and breasts, where entire portions of flesh had been removed. The body had been washed and cleaned and had been "posed" with her hands over her head, her elbows bent at right angles, and her legs spread.Near the body detectives found a cement sack which contained droplets of watery blood, as well as a heel print on the ground amidst tire tracks.

The autopsy stated that Short was 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 115 pounds, and had light blue eyes, brown hair, and badly decayed teeth. There were ligature marks on her ankles, wrists, and neck. Although the skull was not fractured, Short had bruising on the front and right side of her scalp with a small amount of bleeding in the subarachnoid space on the right side, consistent with blows to the head. The cause of death was hemorrhage from the lacerations to the face and shock due to blows on the head and face.

PSYCHOLOGY — Geographic profiling

Geographic profiling is a criminal investigative methodology that analyzes the locations of a connected series of crimes to determine the most probable area of offender residence. By incorporating both qualitative and quantitative methods, it assists in understanding spatial behaviour of an offender and focusing the investigation to a smaller area of the community. Typically used in cases of serial murder or rape — but also arson, bombing, robbery, and other crimes — the technique helps police detectives prioritize information in large-scale major crime investigations that often involve hundreds or thousands of suspects and tips.

In addition to determining the offender's most likely area of residence, an understanding of the spatial pattern of a crime series and the characteristics of the crime sites can tell investigators other useful information, such as whether the crime was opportunistic and the degree of offender familiarity with the crime location. This is based on the connection between an offender's hunting behavior and his or her non-criminal life.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Those of you who were here for the victimology lecture might remember the roleplaying we did then — this is something similar. I want you to pair up and discuss amongst yourself what a crime scene says about the perpetrator. You can either make one up like we did during victimology, or use one of the examples of serial killers that we've gone over in previous lectures.

Remember the central concepts of geographic profiling as you analyze your mental crime scenes — the journey to the crime, routine activity, rational choice and crime pattern. The best way to catch a killer is to be able to think as one, and that is what this class is for.

Good luck.

Dawn is here. She'd apologize to Reid for continuing to pester him in his classes, but really, she's not too sorry about it. She finds the criminology classes very interesting. In any case, here she is raising her hand again. And again, sorry. Only this time she doesn't wait for him to call on her to speak. This time she only waits for him to look in her direction and acknowledge she's there. She'd had several less than pleasant run-ins with his girlfriend so she only wants to clarify a few things and then get out of there.

"Hey. I saw this Ghost Hunters episode where they investigated the house where the Black Dahlia murder took place. It was kind of creep-tastic in lots of ways. And -- has nothing to do with my question. Anyway, I'm wondering what the percentage of cases are that are accurately geographically profiled are against the ones that aren't. Or... how often an offender is actually still found outside of the narrowed radius whoever comes up with. Cause it can't always be that accurate, right? So I guess I'm wondering exactly how accurate it can be."

There wouldn't be much of a class without any students willing to pester him and truth be told, Reid has grown kind of fond of Dawn's questions. It means she's listening and even more so, it gives him a professional workout that is hard to find in this underwater prison. He gives her a smile when she raises her hand, patiently waiting for her to get to the point.

"Just like with victimology or for that matter criminal profiling in general, accuracy is difficult to pinpoint with an exact number. They're more like tools used to eliminate suspects or narrow down where to look. That said, if we didn't have a good success rate we wouldn't be using these tools and just like victimology, geographic profiling is utilized in the majority of the cases we handle."

[ How many professors do you have, Artemis? ] It does make things a little more difficult, but geographic profiling can still be applicable.

I do so hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you may find it prudent to turn your attention beyond the walls of the classroom. It appears that our undersea company is making itself known. [ though he doesn't actually look terribly torn up about breaking such news. in fact, he rather hopes reid already knows. piter even seems quite nonchalant about the possibility of dome-damage and/or drowning-related death. reid being reid, however, will certainly sense the slight tenseness in his movements and his speech today; piter has never experienced such things before in his time here, and being so out of control of the situation is off-putting. ]

[ He looks up as Piter approaches, shifting his stance with slight unease. It's been a couple of days since that conversation with Kitty and he's still not entirely sure what to do. For now it's business as usual, though. Perhaps because he'd prefer it if they could continue as they have been. ]

So I noticed. [ He casts a glance domewards, despite there being a whole lot of ceiling in the way. ] I can't remember ever seeing anything that big outside... what do you think it means?

[Always in attendance. Maybe she'll get a perfect attendance certificate. She should needle Reid about making them. Elaborate borders are a must.

Also, totally up for chatting as she'll be sticking around to walk him home. Can't let him do things like that by himself.]

[They can get a perfect attendance record together. Derek shows up just as the lecture is starting, just as he did last time. He's here to support Reid if not actually talk to him. And he makes a bee-line for the door when it's over. But he does say a quick hello to Kitty first. Because she happens to be on his way out and it'd be rude not to.]

You know you should probably get one of those sexy schoolgirl outfits and come with an apple for the teacher next time. It'd go better with the ogling you've got goin' on when you watch him.

Wow, you are good at that profiling thing. [She reaches in her bag and pulls out a shiny red apple. Why, yes, she already had plans.] The outfit will have to wait though.

And I don't ogle. That's just how I look when I'm learning. Teach a class and you'll see.

Hello, my name is Peggy Carter. Shall we discuss the crime scene together? We both seem to be without a partner today.

[ for a moment, elena's eyes darted around the room for a partner of her own. but she straightens some in her seat at the introduction and offers peggy a smile as well. ] Sure. I'm Elena Gilbert. You wanna sit? [ she gestures to the desk next to her. ]

[ well, it's just another day for elena. still, when she glances over at who's sitting next to her and spots damon, she stops and blinks.

what is he doing-? no, nope, not touching it; she knows the answer to that.
] I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to drink in class. Or anywhere. [ since that's what got him solitary in the first place. ]

[What Yakumo hadn't realized when he picked this particular classroom to fall asleep in was that there would actually be a class in it.

He manages to sleep through the arrival of the other students, and only wakes up when Reid starts speaking.

Tch. He should leave. Except...the topic is kind of interesting. Keeping his eyes closed and doing his best impression of somebody you Do Not Want To Talk To, he sticks around and listens to the lecture.]

[ If he'd noticed that someone was sleeping in his classroom, he might've done something about it. As it is, it isn't brought to his attention until after the lecture has started and once you're going... well, it'd be awkward to stop.

He does however make his way over to the kid once they're done. An apology might be in order. ]

[In a gesture of almost-politeness, he shrugs as though to dismiss Reid's apology. (If anyone should be apologizing, it's Yakumo. But he's not going to.)]

I didn't know you taught a class, Dr. Reid.

[This comment might sound creepy if Reid didn't introduce himself at the beginning of class (Yakumo doesn't know; he was asleep for that part). The young man had deduced Reid's name based on the conversation he'd had with Lacus on his arrival, when she mentioned the criminal profilers who were in prison here.]
