Seems like we've got a few sports teams going here. Which is awesome, don't get me wrong. But I'm wondering if anybody around here knows how to play hockey? Real hockey, not the retro version.

[Terry's got his routine pretty settled. Catch him on his morning building scaling, patrol in the afternoon, or any time in between wandering around and people-watching.]

All the girls, or just one in particular?

[She has basically no leg to stand on here, but never let it be said Zatanna let an opportunity for teasing go to waste.]

Now just who would that be? [Fine then, Zee, be that way.]

I don't know. You tell me.

I'm not the one trying to impress her with gravity-defying feats.

Whatever. [He waves a hand dismissively.] My girlfriend's at home.

[Oh. Well....um...that's...yeah.]

So...practicing for when you get back, then?

Sure.

Can't be too impressive back home, though. My secret identity is actually supposed to stay secret there.

Of course it is.

This is why secret identities seem like so much more trouble than they're worth, honestly. I mean, sure, you get to hide from the bad guys...but you're also hiding from everyone else in your life, too.

It's everyone else that I'm worried about.

You don't think any of them could take care of themselves?

I don't think it's fair to give everyone I know every enemy I've ever made.

I think you've got it a little backwards there.

We're talking about telling your friends about your enemies, not the other way around. I've known about what my dad did practically my whole life, and not once did any of the bad guys come after me. [Not until she started going after them first.] So, unless they have some weird telepathy that only works on people who aren't you...I think you'd be okay.

Doesn't have to be telepathy. I already got somebody in trouble that way, I'm not doing it again.

...Wait. What do mean what your dad did? [To Terry's knowledge, Zatanna's the first crime fighting magician in her her family.]

What do you mean, what do I mean?

He was one of the founding members of the Justice League. In the public eye twice over, if you count that and his work as a stage magician. Without a mask.

Not in my timeline he wasn't. I mean, he was a stage magician. [That he knows from Bruce's old stories.] But the first sorcerer on the League was Fate.

[A wince, and she somehow manages to maintain eye contact despite the fact that her voice noticeably lowers:]

Yeah. That's him.

I take it it was bad.

He sacrificed himself for me.

How? [Terry keeps his expression blank as he can. They've never talked much about their pasts, but he hopes Zatanna can guess his story isn't much happier. It's his own style of understanding, even if it's not terribly communicative.]

[She can suspect. Tragic Family Stories seemed to be a recurring theme with Batfamily and Associates.]

He...it was my fault. We were in the middle of losing the battle with Klarion, so I stupidly put on the Helmet myself. Only Doctor Fate wouldn't let me go. Not until Dad agreed to trade his soul for mine.

So now he's trapped. Eternally. And I'm the reason he's in there.

The Helmet is... [Okay, don't look freaked out here Terry. Stoic face. Act like you're Bruce. Nothing surprises you because you've seen it all before.] I knew it had a mind of its own, I just didn't know it would -- do something like that.

It's not the Helmet. It's the Spirit inside of it. Nabu.

Sort of.

Except the Helmet itself doesn't actually do anything. You have to willingly put it on.

Basically, yeah.

[It's my fault he's trapped. The thought replayed in her mind for the millionth time. If I hadn't put on the Helmet in the first place, he would never have had to offer himself in my place. He wouldn't be trapped inside.]
