Day 217 ✝ Action / Voice
[Earlier in the morning, Derek is running around the Defense Force headquarters. Mostly, he’s been acquainting himself with the updated roster for the Force, especially his Investigative Team. He sends out a quick message to said Investigative Team informing them that there will be a meeting that afternoon at three. It isn’t mandatory so if they miss it, it’s not a big deal. But they will be discussing a course of action to try to learn more about the prison.

As he also notes that his sector patrol team has changed, he decides to touch base with the new people as well. He’s not a huge fan of changes, but he handles it better if he gets the upper hand on it. So during his lunch break (street food stands in sector 0), he tosses them a private message.
]

[ private voice to Terry McGinnis and Zero Kiryuu ]
Hey, name’s Derek Morgan. I see we work Sector One together and thought we should touch base so we know who we’re workin’ with.

ooc: The Investigative team meeting is a mingle. Derek will intro and let them know what it’s about, but feel free to thread with anyone in attendance. Also, anyone is free to run into Derek at HQ or when he breaks for lunch.

[Jean-Luc is at the Investigative Team meeting. Their leader poses some good questions and he’d like to discuss the dimensional stabilizer with Data and Seven at the others’ earliest convenience. However, anyone is free to approach the Captain in the meantime.]

[Rose catches sight of Jean-Luc during one of their breaks. She knew he was here, but hadn't had a chance to do more than wave at him until now. She approaches him with a smile, in a better frame of mind than she had been the last time she saw him. She's not over the Doctor by any means and she still wears the blue band on her wrist that has no mate now, but she is doing better. This meeting helps. It gives her something productive to work toward.]

Hullo, shoulda expected seein' you here.

[At her earlier wave, he had grinned and nodded a greeting. And he'd paid close attention to the things she had mentioned of the dimensional stabilizer with Mr. Morgan. He was most impressed at her knowledge. Now, as she approached, he actually smiled and nodded again, clasping his hands together behind his back.]

Ms. Tyler. I consider this meeting a coo both in that I now know that we're colleagues on the same team and in that your insight into the inner workings of dimensional travel is most impressive.

[She ducks her head, grinning at his compliment.]

I wouldn't say that. Didn't even finish my A levels, but I sorta...had to learn on the fly.

Such knowledge without any formal training is even more impressive. And I would add that all of my own training in Starfleet still did not prepare me for the insight and wisdom that comes with experience.

May I ask what circumstances forced you to learn in such haaste?

[She didn't mean to make herself more impressive. She just meant to explain that she really didn't have any formal training the way he probably did.]

Oh...Accidentally got lost in a parallel dimension. Doctor was in another dimension. I knew he wouldn't look for me 'cause he thought I was better off where I was. Safer, y'know? I had to go lookin' for him. Besides, the stars started dyin' out in my dimension. All of 'em. I knew somethin' was comin' and we'd need the Doctor to fix it. [The way she words her reasons for learning so quickly are very telling. Saving the universe was a side effect of finding the Doctor for Rose.]

We sorta got lucky. UNIT found the TARDIS in one dimension. She was half broken and the Doctor was nowhere to be found. I had a key though. Only one in alla the dimensions who could open it without the Doctor."

It had been her bargaining chip when she'd insisted that she be on the project. The fact that she had experience jumping dimensions and repertoire with the TARDIS helped.

[He looks at her with a hint of amusement. And this is a statement, not a question.] My, aren't you tenacious. A quality of which I'm certain will one day reunite you with this Doctor of yours, that is if you have anything to say about it.

[Rose smirks a little, popping up on her toes and then back down.]

Guess I know what I want and I don't stop 'til I get it? [Which is sort of the definition of tenacious. She did say she didn't have her A levels.]

Rose, then. [It's something he'll have to get used to. Jean-Luc is more of one who thrives on some kind of decorum. Although occasionally he does let himself relax, given time.]

If you will call me Jean-Luc in return.

[ Naturally, checking in with Picard is the first thing Data does after the group discussion - it isn't hard for him to pick up on when the Captain may want to discuss something in further detail, or to determine a course of action. So he walks over and, with a small, precise nod - ]

Mr. Data. [Having heard Agent Morgan's discussion with Rose and this man he'd called Jack, Jean-Luc looks around the room and offers a small smile when he sees the man in question approaching them.]

Ah. Here we are. Introductions seem to be an order. I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard and this is Lieutenant Commander Data.

[Jack's seen them both around, but has never got around to speaking to either of them. Now, he's realising he probably should have done. He nods to both of them, returning the smile.]

Captain. Lieutenant Commander. Captain Jack Harkness, at your service!

[He looks between the two of them.]

I take it you're both from some point later than most of those here?

[Data definitely is; the Captain isn't so obvious but if they already knew each other back home...]

[ Data offers a friendly nod back, with a small but polite upward quirk to the corner of his mouth.]

A pleasure, Captain Harkness.

[ And one small quirk of a single brow, with a subtle angling of his head. ]

That is correct. We are from Earth's twenty-fourth century.

Yes, we're with Starfleet, the deep-space exploratory and defense service of the United Federation of planets.

[Obviously militant given Data's and his own uniforms. Jean-Luc is curious about Jack's own origins as well. But he does also know that the title 'Captain' is not always assigned through a rank in a military.

He glances down to the band around Jack's wrist.
] Captain, your technology seems to surpass many of those within the dome. I take it that your time is from what many would consider the future as well?

[The name Starfleet sounds vaguely familiar but he can't quite place it right now.]

Twenty-fourth, huh. [He gives Data a once-over, and yes, that might be a faint leer there. Sorry.] Very impressive engineering for that era, if I might say so!

[Then he grins at Picard, unbuckling the wriststrap so they can examine it.] Yeah, I'm a little bit ahead of you, originally. This is fifty-first century tech.

((OOC: Heh, sorry, for some reason I assumed they wouldn't still be wearing uniform. Let's just pretend the uniforms were incorporated into Jack's reasoning there!

Also, I can never decide whether the ST universe would be a part of the DW universe and thus whether Jack would know the actual Starfleet or would have watched ST on tv, so I'll leave it as 'vaguely familiar' for now! *g*))

[ That leer gets an arched brow, which deepens slightly into a furrow on the comment about engineering, glancing down at himself with a light, puzzled frown. Not that he's particularly offended, just... determining if it is in fact him that Jack is referring to.

His brow is still furrowed when he glances back up, but his attention is quickly refocused onto the wriststrap, craning his neck just a bit as he looks at it. ]

That would make you a greater statistical outlier than ourselves. The majority of individuals present in the facility appear to be from the late twentieth to twenty-first centuries. Though it is, of course, possible for varying timelines to have progressed at differing paces. Any given era from one timeline may not necessarily be comparable to that same era in another timeline.

[ This is when he realizes that he's rambling and diverts himself back to the matter at hand. ]

Regardless, there is a reasonable likelihood that, given the opportunity for proper analysis of your technology, it would be possible to reverse-engineer it.

[ooc: so sorry for slow and fail, work is... work]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

omg sorry so slow. life!
[info]tea_earlgreyhot
2013-05-12 04:45 pm UTC (link)
[Jean-Luc notices that leer as well, and files it away for the moment rather than reacting to it. He knows that Data has seen his fair share of critique and knows how to handle such things with a certain amount of grace, ironic perhaps.

But he's also impressed by the mere idea of the fifty-first century in his own timeline, the possibilities for advancement were endless given where they were in their own time. But that is neither here nor there given the matter at hand.

He holds his hands together behind his back, listening intently to both men and nodding curtly.
] Reverse engineer it to the point that it might be equitable to the technology within the prison, so that the two might work alongside each other rather than against each other.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

No worries – I'm not at my fastest either!

[Jack watches Data’s reactions to him with warm amusement.]

Yeah, I’m originally from the fifty-first century, but I came here from the early twenty-first, which I guess makes me a better bet statistically for being here.

I have to admit, I’ve not been able to find out much about the underlying technology here. I know how my tech works, obviously, but I don’t have much idea how to make it compatible with the Dome’s tech. Is that something you think you might be able to do, either of you?

Since our arrival, we have been making ongoing efforts to develop an understanding of the technology employed by the dome.

[ Frustration. That's an emotion Data is becoming acquainted with. Fortunately, he has more than enough tenacity to keep it from interfering in his efforts. He doesn't share that Annika may contribute her own unique approach to this endeavour - given that it concerns her unique nature, he doesn't consider himself to have the right to disclose that information. ]

There are, of course, numerous and advanced security measures in place; it would be unwise to risk a breech that could be detected by the wardens, or by other unknown entities, until we are certain of how to approach such an undertaking.
