Day 217 ✝ Action / Voice
[Earlier in the morning, Derek is running around the Defense Force headquarters. Mostly, he’s been acquainting himself with the updated roster for the Force, especially his Investigative Team. He sends out a quick message to said Investigative Team informing them that there will be a meeting that afternoon at three. It isn’t mandatory so if they miss it, it’s not a big deal. But they will be discussing a course of action to try to learn more about the prison.

As he also notes that his sector patrol team has changed, he decides to touch base with the new people as well. He’s not a huge fan of changes, but he handles it better if he gets the upper hand on it. So during his lunch break (street food stands in sector 0), he tosses them a private message.
]

[ private voice to Terry McGinnis and Zero Kiryuu ]
Hey, name’s Derek Morgan. I see we work Sector One together and thought we should touch base so we know who we’re workin’ with.

ooc: The Investigative team meeting is a mingle. Derek will intro and let them know what it’s about, but feel free to thread with anyone in attendance. Also, anyone is free to run into Derek at HQ or when he breaks for lunch.

Investigative Team ✝ Talk to Derek
[info]bloodcakedarmor
2013-05-01 03:06 pm UTC (link)
At three, Derek gets the attention of everyone in the conference room at the Defense Force headquarters where he’s holding the meeting. He waits for the room to quiet down to a murmur before speaking. “Hey, first and foremost this is a way for us to all get acquainted with who we’re working with. So make sure you familiarize yourself with the faces in this room and maybe shake a few hands and get to know each other. I’m Derek Morgan, which most of you know.”

He pauses, looking around the room and kind of wishing Hotch were still here. But then, his absence is the catalyst for what he says next. “I have two main avenues I wanna focus on for awhile. First, sector six. I’ve spoken with Kitty and we agree that sector six is worth looking into. We’re planning a grid search where we can comb the sector with a fine tooth comb. There has to be a reason those creatures are in there, or even in this prison with us. We have a theory that they might be hiding or guarding something. So what we need to do today, is come up with any anomalies that we might need to look for and make a list. Anomalies such as where the creatures congregate, where the vegetation might not look quite right… things like that. Any input, any ideas… we welcome them all regarding sector six.

The second avenue I want us to focus on is the dimensional stabilizer. This is supposedly the place where people who leave the dome end up. Is anyone familiar with this kind of technology? What do we know about it? Any ideas where it might be located within the prison?” His eyes are maybe a little darker, more emotional when talking about the dimensional stabilizer. But he can’t help that. This is personal. And he’s decided to focus on it rather than on other things.

“These are the things we’re here to discuss in open forum as a team. Otherwise, thanks for taking the time out of your day for this and I’d like to get to know all of you. Thanks for coming.”

Rose, almost sheepishly, raises her hand. She knows the Doctor would be much better at this sort of thing. However, once she gets started, the confidence she learned working with UNIT and being the lead on the dimensional cannon project comes back.

"Sorta. Back home, me and a buncha military blokes built a dimensional cannon. We were just sorta...rippin' through dimensions, but anytime you make a hole you gotta shore up the edges with somethin' or it'll collapse on itself eventually and destroy both dimensions. Part of the cannon included a stabilizer to help...slow down the rippin'. Didn't stop it." She wants that made clear as one of her crimes here is destroying dimensions. "Just put a plaster on it."

As Derek knows little to nothing about this kind of technology, he's so thankful that someone speaks up on the topic. He knows that a grid search of sector six is the safer, easier topic at hand. And really was grasping at straws where the dimensional stabilizer was concerned. So he nods his understanding (or his attempt at understanding) as he listens to Rose, who sounds like she knows what she's talking about to him.

"So the dimensional stabilizer could be the in-between of here and where they pull us from, like a limbo that holds that in-between open." He reasons. "Would that mean there's a different stabilizer for each person or would they be able to put more than one in one... limbo room?" He obviously is new to this sort of tech speak.

"I'm guessin' here 'cause I've only had experience with the one and I mentioned we were just sorta...imagine firin' a cannon at a wall. Leaves behind a gaping hole, yeah? That's sorta what we were doin' with dimensions. Anyway, I'm guessin' this set up is more sophisticated. I'd think at most there'd be two? Assumin' we're in a pocket dimension here, there's prolly a stabilizer for the dome. Like a door or a plug. If they're bringin' people in through it, s'prolly more a door than a plug. Let's assume the limbo room is another pocket dimension steada warehouse sorta room within this dimension. Limbo rooms for every person'd take too much energy and it'd be pokin' too many holes in this dimension it's hooked to. It'd make this dimension weak and vulnerable. They've got another stabilizer for the limbo room." She hesitates, considering her words a moment. "Prolly anyhow. I mean...that'd make sense. When we're thinkin' 'bout escape, we've gotta consider what sorta dimension is on the other side of this one. It's...sorta like the tube, except you've got to get off at every stop. You jump from dimension to dimension 'til you get to the right one, 'cept you've gotta deal with navigatin' each dimension."

Derek nods, considering that for a moment. Honestly, hearing it explained to him like that, spelled out for him, is helping him get a better picture of it and of what they might accomplish were they ever to find this 'door' to get into it. Honestly, at this point, he'd volunteer himself as the sacrificial lamb to go through to the other side and see what dimension is lined up with this one.

"Would we be able to distinguish one of these 'doors' from the rest of the dome if we came across it? What do they look like?"

Rose shakes her head at his question. "It's gonna be invisible, probably." Her brow furrows as she considers this. "Might be able to make some good guesses though. If they're like the dimensional rips back home, we can get some of those old 3D glasses, with the red and blue lenses," she pauses to make certain he knows what she's talking about.

"They let you see...void stuff. When you travel through dimensions, you collect it. I'm covered in it. Theoretically, a rip, even one with a door, ought to have void stuff 'round it."

She hesitates because she doesn't want to burst anyone's bubble. "Our biggest problem's gonna be openin' it. We need time lord technology and...we're missin' one time lord. The wardens ought to have somethin' equivalent, but they aren't goin' to give it to us."

((OOC: Not sure if we're supposed to all talk together here or separately, but this seemed like a point where Jack would interect! I'll move this to a separate thread if preferred, though.))

"We may not have a Time Lord, but we have an ex-Time Agent," Jack announces, from not far away. He holds out his left wrist with the wide leather strap around it, buckle undone to show the inner workings of the vortex manipulator. "Most of this isn't working right now, but at least we have the tech here and if we got someone here with the right knowledge, they might be able to use it to help with dimension jumping. It's definitely got a lot of the right parts."

The old 3D glasses were a surprise to him. He wasn't sure what they would accomplish but he was also pretty sure they could find some somewhere, or request the materials to make them without the Warden's realizing what they were going to use the materials for. "Maybe we can find some of those here in the dome somewhere. Maybe at the movie theater. If everyone went in to see a 3D movie it'd probably be harder to track that we're taking the glasses in bulk."

He's glad when Jack pipes up too. More people with knowledge that would help them out. And more knowledge always meant more power in his book. They had some tech that they might could use to get past whatever safeguards the bots had set up, that is if they could get it to work. Honestly, he's getting a lot more out of exploring this topic than he'd even hoped for.

"Jack that's perfect." He nods at the leather strap on his wrist. "Maybe you could work with..." Just a second, he's looking over the roster again. He'd looked over files earlier. "Data? And Picard? They have knowledge of futuristic tech too. If we could just get that tech jump started no matter how brief, it'd be something. What exactly does it do usually?"

Jack nods. "The 3D glasses would definitely be worth a shot," he agrees, smiling across at Rose.

He notes the names Derek gives and nods again. "Sure, we'll have a chat, see if any of this means anything to them! It's a vortex manipulator, among other things like scanners and so on. It's the time-travel function that might be useful here, though hell, I'd settle for getting the teleport working!"

((OOC: Sneaking in a quick reply before bed so you guys can carry on without me! Will have Jack talk to Picard & Data in the morning.))

Rose breaks into a smile when Jack chimes in. She looks back at him with a fond look. "That's brilliant. We ought to be able to work with that. Just gotta figger out how to get it workin' again."

She looks back to Derek. "The movie's a good idea if they've got it. Might even be able to request one of the old 3D movies to be played."

She bites her bottom lip, pulling it through her teeth. "I'll do some thinkin' too, 'bout how we can get it workin' again."

She'd sweet talked the TARDIS into booting up again. She didn't think that would work with Jack's vortext manipulator.

"Also, once we have the glasses, we'll need a description of what the team should be looking for. Like what... void stuff looks like." He sounds incredibly out of his comfort zone even saying the words void stuff. But he's a trooper, okay? This is all information that he didn't think they would have. It's a chance to learn more about the prison, about how it works and maybe how to get out. So he'll take being out of his comfort zone.

He pauses. "I've recently... had some trouble with the Wardens. So it might be best if we're requesting a 3D film for it to come from someone else." He looks back and forth between Jack and Rose. For all he knows, they may have had some trouble with the Wardens recently as well.

Yeah, sweet-talking only tends to work with telepathic machines, unfortunately. Jack's wriststrap might fulfil a similar function to the TARDIS, but it works completely differently.

He grins at Derek's obvious unease with the terminology for 'void stuff'. "There are technical terms for these things, of course, but 'void stuff' is fairly accurate. When you look through the right thing – like the 3D glasses – it just looks like all these particles floating around whatever the breach is. Or the person who's travelled through it."

Like Derek, he pauses then. "Regarding the Wardens – uh – I'm not exactly their favourite person either. I'm not in any actual trouble at the moment, but… Rose? You're probably a far better bet for requests than I am!"

"I don't even know the technical terms. Doctor just always called it void stuff. That's how I referred to it with UNIT." And they'd been too busy trying to figure out who she was and what she was trying to do to fill her in on anything technical. "Jack's right 'bout how it looks though. Black particles just...floatin' 'round a person. It accumulates with each trip, like invisible badges on your passport. Oh! Or like stickers you used to get stamped on your luggage."

She realizes after a moment that bit isn't important, but it's something she and the Doctor would have rambled on about for several minutes before refocusing.

"All right. 'm not in any sorta trouble. I can ask 'em 'bout a 3D movie. Probably ought to come up with somethin' specific, yeah? Like Jaws 3D or Attack of the Killer Tomatoes."

Talk to Derek

Although it's not strange for Reid to keep to the outskirts of conversation, he's surprisingly quiet throughout the meeting. Sure, he gave an opinion or suggestion where necessary but most of the time he remained silent, standing towards the back of the room, observing more than participating. Tired and subdued and most of all worried. He doesn't know where they stand and he hates it. It makes him feel like the ground under his feet is coming loose, even more so here than back home.

Once the meeting draws to a close, he approaches. Cautiously. Waits for a sign to tell him that it's alright or perhaps that it definitely isn't. Either way, Morgan may have to speak up first.

Derek is in pretend everything is fine and focus his entire self on something else mode. It didn't escape his notice that Reid hadn't spoken up during the meeting as much as he normally would have. And Derek knows that that is in part his own fault for being so distant from Reid, Garcia and Prentiss since her arrival. He still feels the need to do so, but he can also put on a good show when he has a case to work on, and this meeting is giving him that.

So when he sees Reid approaching, he offers him a small grin and meets him halfway. "So what do you think about all this?"

There's a small amount of relief to the fact that Morgan is willing to talk to him at all, but it's not enough to completely wash away the uneasiness. Talking about work is a good place to start though, perhaps even a good place to stay and although he remains somewhat stiff he falls into it with ease.

"Sector 6 is a good place to start. I get the feeling we've exhausted the rest of the dome as far as data goes."

"Yeah, I'm just not sure what exactly we'd be looking for in there." He continues, knowing that this is what's easiest right now. Maybe the more they say to each other, the easier other things might come. Talking with Garcia at lunch had helped a little bit. "Hidden doors, protected areas?"

"Anything out of the ordinary, I'd guess. Maybe we need to map the area first, gather as much data as we can before looking for discrepancies." Like any case, really. Know what you're dealing with so you can spot the things that fit the profile or, in this case, stick out from the established pattern.

"At least, that's what I'd do."

He tenses some at the question. Just a tad, barely noticeable unless you happen to either know him well or be an experienced profiler. So much have been going on lately — always — and between Hotch and Emily and some other things that he hasn't even allowed himself to process yet, there's only one answer he can give.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just fine."

Derek knows Reid very well, too well, maybe. He isn't sure he needs to be an experienced profiler to read him, but he supposes it doesn't hurt. "About as fine as me. We can be just fine together."

He looks up to Reid, draws a deep breath and slowly exhales. "I'm sorry I lost my temper with you. It wasn't about you. You know that, right?"

"I know." It's short and tense and close to dismissive. He approached Morgan with some desire to patch things up but now that they're here, he can't really handle it. Never could.

"I probably shouldn't have told you in the first place. It can't be good, knowing things about your future."

"No, I'm pretty sure that's something I needed to know." Derek answers decisively. He'd rather be in the know than to have things hidden from him. By his way of thinking, that made Reid the most trust-worthy person he knew aside from Garcia.

"I get it. I'm glad she's alive. I just..." He shakes his head. "Anyway, the grid search. Maybe you could help me organize it."

"Sure, I can do that. Do you want to set it up like a search party?" Pretty happy to leave that subject behind now, he gratefully latches on to work. "I've heard that the communicators don't work as well in there though... so maybe we need to establish some other system of communication."

"Yeah, we can set up teams, no one goes in alone. Give everyone ribbons to section off where they've searched to make sure every inch is searched. And we might even do it twice, switching sections just to keep everyone honest." Because Derek doesn't trust this kind of work to anyone but his BAU team. So a double check on each section of the sector would make him feel better.

"I might go through there and map it out to begin with just so we can grid-line it off for each team." He adds. "A crappy map is better than no map. What do you suggest for communication?"
