My, my, this is quite the development. Get unlawfully incarcerated, get a free Skype account and a reject Xbox headset. Microsoft ditched this design for a reason, but it's good to know that access to social media isn't limited to the footloose and fancy free. They can cross being biased against the criminally charged off their would be lawsuits -- if any of these charges happened to be valid, that is. You seem to be lacking a proper judicial system. Get one. The Big Brother look isn't good a look on anyone, and I have zero interest in playing along with your little game of transdimensional authoritarian checkers, Stalin and Mussolini. [ that'd be you, conscienti and veridical. ]

As for the pocket placement itself, sans your little list o' crimes... [ a shrug of indifference. ] As a good friend of mine once said, "Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company."

[ not like he's got anything better to do -- at least, not at the moment. give it time, he'll grow bored and restless, and start rattling the bars on his underwater cage soon enough. neither will stop him from being difficult, though. ]

Anyone know if this thing happens to do Guitar Hero?

I'm - not sure that would convince me. [ particularly because she wouldn't understand it, and even if she did, that's not necessarily proof. ] How are you - here? Why would they take you? [ obviously people have been imprisoned for far less than jaywalking -- and jaywalking too -- but somehow 'famous well-known scientist' doesn't fit the idea in elena's head when she thinks of all the other inmates, from so many different worlds. ]

[ you'd be surprised. this innocent face isn't as innocent as it seems. the man who was once a peaceful futurist grew bitter and tainted in the years following his staged death. he's committed his fair of jail-able acts and even has blood on his hands, though he'd insist the cabal side of that was perfectly justifiable and needed to be done.

unwilling to give her the real answer, he holds up his hands and tells her what a british prime minister once told him. ]
"Illegal" use of electricity. Whatever that means. Also, they seem to frown upon faking your own death. Apparently getting world powers off your back is taboo.

No. I make a point not to mess with time. Too many variables, uncertainties, and possible paradoxes. As interesting as it is, it's not worth the trouble in the long run. [ another shrug -- he's full of those today. ] Let's just say I conducted a few blood experiments in the 1880s and presto, change-o, accidental longevity.

[ elena knows a thing or two about exploiting the convenience of partial truths. the way her life has went, the things she's had to say and do and keep to herself? let's just say more than ever she believes trust has to be earned; you can't just magically hand it over.

and that goes both ways.

in other words, she is sure whether this is the truth or a truth... there's probably more.

but for now, accidental longevity will suffice in muting her for a moment. her eyes grow wide and round; she blinks. she believes it's possible, because what isn't at this point?

after a moment of processing, she nods. (she's doubting how someone could "accidentally" find the key to immortality.)

To tell you the truth, my dear, [ and this was the truth ] we didn't know what we were looking for. What we did was ambitious, but also extremely reckless. It was, in hindsight, foolish of us to go into tampering with such things blind, but at least we had the sense to experiment on ourselves instead of willing or unwilling test subjects. [ or animals, god forbid. ] What we found varied somewhat from person to person.

she doesn't seem particularly taken aback by the implications of the key words there. her question is asking confirmation, not an expression of shock.

[ a chuckle, a shake of his head. ] No. [ no and yes. he's part vampire. pure bloods are extinct. ] I'm electromagnetic with a side of longevity. Varying results, none of them vampirism. [ that's a lie. ] Of course, we ran the risk of accidentally creating one, but we didn't have the full story at the time. The ancients were born, not bitten.

[ helen promised them. she swore up and down that vampires bred like any other being, and that blood transitions were nothing more than myth and legend. she said none of them would end up a vampire. of course, none of the accounted for the fact that the ancients had crossbred with humans and that one of them would have dormant vampire genetics there for the reawakening. ]

[ his no, the chuckle; she's not sure if she believes t. it's separate from believing him; it's just what she knows, and one thing that hasn't been different between worlds and folklore.

vampire blood changes you - changes you into one. but she can suspend her disbelief to believe in another possibility. and another, meaning he's electromagnetic. (that's never been connected to vampirism, as far and much as she recalls.)

ancients being born - that's information that interests her too. that they ran the risks of creating a vampire.

The Five. It's what we called ourselves -- not very creative, I know, but we were young. Reckless. Quite the group of scientific hoodlums, all things considered. Rebels in our day and fields of interest. Two of us went down in history, though only I achieved that in name and not notoriety. Another two served as the basis for literary characters, and the fifth... Well, she's managed to keep herself out of the limelight while continuing to tango with world powers. Don't ask me how she does it; woman's a miracle worker with the patience of a saint.

I'm certain you've at least heard of the other three out of four.

[ sherlock holmes gets a raised brow, the invisible man a furrowed one, and jack the ripper... elena is quiet, her lips parting, her expression mildly unsure about her feelings here. for the record, she's leaning towards 'this is not okay.' (but she realizes enough about herself to reserve judgement. and have it quietly.)

she pulls in a breath and then sets her mouth. this is a frown, but she leans forward, because curiosity wins out.

He was a student of science once, as eager as the rest of us to see what secrets were hidden in our own genetic structures. You realize the field was very young back then. It was 1886, only twenty years since Mendel published that study on plant hybridization, and Lamarck's theory of species transmutation was so radical, no-one took it seriously until Darwin was bold enough to tackle the issue. Even then, he was seen as a radical. They -- we were all radicals. But back then, if you so dared to push known science beyond it's accepted limitations, you were automatically a radical. Especially when you pushed the limits in the way we did. Teratology wasn't exactly one of the courses offered at Oxford, but those of us with an interest in it would meet and study it on our own, which led to experimentation with untainted sanguine vampiris blood and the serum we derived from it.

[ realizing he's gone off on a slight scientific tangent, he gets himself back on topic: johnny. ]

Like I said, we all experienced different results. DNA is a wonderful thing, my dear, and it holds many secrets. The Ripper's secret, his abnormality that was given life when exposed to the serum, made those murders possible after he went mad. Scotland Yard never could figure out how he was so easily able to get from one site to the next, with some speculating it was multiple killers and not just one. But, it was. And the reason he was able to get from Point A to Point B so effortlessly was thanks to his abnormality. His power.

He was a teleporter.

[ this is, perhaps, the most civilly he's ever spoken in regards to montague john druitt in well over a century. and it's to a curious teenage girl. go figure. ]

[ a nod. ] Vampire blood doesn't turn people into vampires, but it does encourage recessive genes to surface and abnormalities that would've otherwise remained dormant to be exposed. My electromagnetism, Johnny's teleportation, her longevity -- you get the picture.
