Day 211 [action/voice]
[ action/open ]

[ From long before the morning message -- since around midnight, actually -- until around noon, Dirk can be found working in the gardens in Sector Four. When it begins to rain, he scowls, but keeps his work up. He has a date to go on tonight; and he's fairly sure that if he skips out, that troll that is his pre-scratch self will further attempt to fuck things up with Jake. He can't allow that.

Do feel free to bother him. ]

[ voice/open/around 11AM ]

What a great day for rain.

Got a few things I wanted to mention before I'm too preoccupied. First: That wiki Crane was working on? Last night I added a page to answer a bunch of recurring newbie questions. Hopefully, it'll cut down on some of the repetitiveness of New Inmates Day.

Second: My friend Roxy and I have a project we're working on. You know, bettering ourselves for rehab and shit? Anyone who's good with computers is welcome to come help us out. Tony Stark, Penelope Garcia? You two might be interested. We're thinking of meeting in the computer lab tomorrow, around one PM. Who all's game?

Third: Just so everyone knows, I'm taking Jake English to the Sadie Hawkins dance tonight. This is not up for debate. [ He's just a smidgen defensive. Things have been getting under his skin lately. ]

[ action/closed to flatmates ]

[ Around noon, Dirk drags himself home, takes a surprisingly quick shower to clean the mud from himself, and collapses face-first into bed.

You really don't want to bother him. Or do you? ]

...

[ Wow. ]

They're two separate things that you've somehow managed to combine into one.

Well, you did put them right next to each other. Anyone could have made that mistake. Anyone! Okay, maybe just him. Shut up.] So Crane is a person? What is a wiki? [This one is less his tech badness although that is still part of it and more his timeline. It wasn't that long ago he had no idea what google was.]

It's an online encyclopedia that leaves its editing open to the public. Guessing you don't have Wikipedia where you're from.

If we do, Willow would know about it. Willow being my more tech-minded friend. I usually just go to books when there are encyclopedic needs since I am usually in a library or bookstore.

Wait, the public edits it? How is that even a real thing then?

Well, it's true that you get the occasional vandal who goes around inserting uncreative vulgarities into pages, or replacing pictures of prominent politicians with genitalia. But the collective weight of the people who actually care about the finished product is enough to cancel out this effect. Plus, there are admins. In the case of the MarinaNova wiki, that admin is Rebecca Crane.

[And now all he can do is think about replacing pictures. Give him a second. It's pretty funny in his head. Okay, he's good. No, no wait. Okay, now.] So, we have one of these? Where...is it?

On the computers in the computer lab. It's basically the only internet-like thing they have. Shouldn't be hard to find.

Right. I can do that. [He can probably do that. Just don't look over his shoulder because it will take much longer than it has any right to.] And then I can write anything I want into it? [It's not a threat. Why would you think it's a threat? Clearly you don't. Good.]

Yeah, basically. [ He should try harder to stress that it's not for fucking around with. But Xander needs to ~learn that on his own~. ]

[Such concern!] So, how is that going to help cut down on newbie explanation time? Are we just supposed to point them to the computer lab?

Yeah. Pretty much everyone asks the same shit when they come in -- who's running this joint, how do I get home, et cetera. We collect all the answers in one place, we cut down on confusion.

Okay, but that place isn't a place they are unless they just happen to land there and they'll probably want answers before they start following mysterious directions from fellow criminals. [Look at him throwing up walls. Well, he was a carpenter.]

It's not a perfect solution. Maybe we can talk the wardens into allowing access to it on the headsets?

We in general. We, the inmates. The latter, I guess? It's not really my project, I just wrote a bunch of words on it.

So what did you tell them anyway? Or I guess I could do that thing where I go read it. [Sounds like work though.] Maybe you should do a dramatic reading of it and then just replay that on the network every time they arrive.

You could use an accent. [Accents are exciting, okay?] Maybe knock some coconut shells together for horse hoof sounds.
