day 210 | video
[ the art of disguise is not merely physical. it runs on many layers, and the ability to replicate and manipulate emotions is just as important as the way one looks. it all comes in handy, though, especially when you're a world-renowned criminal mastermind in a new place with new people and you need to get your bearings.

this is why the residents of marina will be finding themselves in the company of richard brook, the fretful out-of-work actor, rather than the criminal mastermind that is james moriarty. it's only practical, after all; it would be absolutely ridiculous for everyone to be aware of his capabilities right off the bat.

the rumpled-looking man showing on the video feed is rather obviously distressed. he seems more fearful than angry, however -- his voice wavers as he mutters to himself, very quietly.
]

...torture? Murder? Really, I can't --

[ he pauses, and takes a deep breath. ]

I thought we'd been through all this once already. I'm innocent. I didn't do any of those horrible things, not a single one -- all I did was look the part. I swear, I'm being honest, I'll tell you everything all over again if I need to.

[ that tremor isn't just in his voice, now. he's shaking. ]

You've got the wrong man. This is a mistake. Please, just let me go home.

Pretty sure that just by phrasing it that way you're proving it's egotism.

[ he raises his eyebrows, now, expression just a bit challenging. ]

[ he mimics that expression, mockingly. ] I do suppose that this word will mean nothing to you, but perhaps a definition will provide some clarity. I am a Mentat: a human trained and conditioned to replace your thinking machines. I must function supra-logically at all times— it is a necessity that my mind be superior. We cannot all be Mentats.

[ conveniently, he leaves out the part about his twisting. it's habit, though, more than it is entirely conscious deception— "twisted Mentat" is, in some circles, synonymous with "animal," and he has never been keen on seeming like less of a mentat. in any case, he merely smiles back at rich. he thinks that he has risen to the challenge well enough. ]

"Thinking machine"? If you're using a ridiculous phrase like that, I think I have rights to doubt your claims of intellectual superiority.

[ there's something about this guy that rubs rich the wrong way. consequently, that means he's rubbing jim just the right way and definitely piquing his interest. ]

I have always found "human computer" too distasteful a term. I do apologize for not catering to your ancient slang.

"Ancient"? You're the one that sounds like a geezer.

[ absolutely not. snickering at piter's expense is not permitted. only piter may be mirthful at the expense of others! ]

Ah, maturity. [ that would be directed at rich's most distasteful actions. he gives him a rather petulant, challenging look. ] But I should think the word is quite apt— I hail from the year 10191. [ he might be hoping that this will freak rich out. he just kind of likes it when it freaks people out, okay. it's the whole "mirth at the expense of others" thing. ]

[ there's a bit of a pause, here. richard doesn't give the desired reaction, however, simply raises his eyebrows again. ]

So you're a bona-fide sci-fi trope, then.

You're a human computer from the far-off future. Come on, don't tell me you can't mentally google what "sci-fi" means if you don't know already.

[ something about this instruction to "googol" makes him recall being asked by PM if he could receive "eee-mail." he does not like it. ] A googol is the digit one followed by one hundred zeroes.

I've heard of your Sye Fye nonsense before, and I've no time for it. I am now merely trying to determine whether or not you're trying to insult me.

...and you can't even figure that out. Bravo!

[ again, there's a bit too much of jim in this right now, but it's still mostly rich. it's just fun to have someone to poke at like this. ]

[ not a wound to pick at, jim. mentats don't take kindly to criticism. his eyes narrow before he gives them a roll. ]

Oh, I've concluded long ago that you are quite eager to irritate me. It's merely a matter now of gauging your insolence, which I have indeed done. [ the implication being that rich is almost as insolent as they come. ]

Now, need I remind you that mere minutes ago you were shaking like a frightened child? You, my dear man, are in no place to harass me. [ there's a bit of a pause before "me" as he stifles the urge to segue into the third person, and then he gives rich a challenging look, as if daring him to misbehave further. ]

[ these "mentats" are apparently fun to poke at. or at least this one in particular is. ]

Being frightened after waking up in an unfamiliar place -- one that's underwater, no less - is a reasonable cause for panic, I'd say. [ an indifferent shrug. ] If you're going to fault me for a normal reaction, let me remind you that you're the one that chose to actually engage in conversation.

[ and here is a smile that does not seem to mesh with rich himself, the way he presents. something about it is just a smidgeon Off. ]

[ that smile prompts a smile from piter, as well. it is a toothy and subtly feral thing, jaunty and amicable and crazed all at once, a smile that encapsulates mockery and warning and utter sass. ]

I'm well aware of that. I suppose I had been operating under the faulty assumption that you wouldn't seek to bore and irritate me. [ a practiced roll of the eyes, as if to insinuate that most everyone in this damnable dome is boring and irritating. which, to piter, they certainly are. ]

[ what is this, some weird kind of horrible-person mating dance? apparently. he keeps that creepy little smile plastered on -- it might even grow a bit when piter mirrors it. ]

Assuming makes an ass out of you and me. Don't you know that phrase?

[ birds of a feather flock together, after all. creepy looking, sassy, sinister as hell birds. he notices the twitch of jim's smile, and it's all terribly interesting— what's more, there does indeed seem to be more to him than that shaking, fidgety fellow. that intrigue is enough to make piter much less inclined to react strongly to this smarmy behavior; in fact, that smarminess only further proves his little hypothesis. ]

I know that I was not just implied to be an ass.

[ the mentat handbook probably has a variant of that phrase, really, but expecting a twisted mentat to always hang onto every little word is a bit much. the fact of the matter is that piter is indeed a total ass. ]

Good for you, it means you know something.

[ he's beaming now, in an insolent, twisted way. all this back-and-forth has been the most satisfying thing to happen to jim since arriving. this is all driving it home that he really needs to be making note of this man, for one reason or another. ]

[ the fact that this fool thinks that he is any way permitted to mouth off to piter so flagrantly cements even further curiosity in him. a part of him is tempted to indulge in the thought of slapping him across the face to see how he'd react, to see whether it would shatter some facade or not.

instead, he goes on grinning back at jim— the way he bares his teeth adds the faintest element of danger and warning to the smile, so subtle that an ordinary man may not have caught it.
]

I know a great many things. Your name is not among them, however.

I am not "everyone else."
