day 210 | video
[ the art of disguise is not merely physical. it runs on many layers, and the ability to replicate and manipulate emotions is just as important as the way one looks. it all comes in handy, though, especially when you're a world-renowned criminal mastermind in a new place with new people and you need to get your bearings.

this is why the residents of marina will be finding themselves in the company of richard brook, the fretful out-of-work actor, rather than the criminal mastermind that is james moriarty. it's only practical, after all; it would be absolutely ridiculous for everyone to be aware of his capabilities right off the bat.

the rumpled-looking man showing on the video feed is rather obviously distressed. he seems more fearful than angry, however -- his voice wavers as he mutters to himself, very quietly.
]

...torture? Murder? Really, I can't --

[ he pauses, and takes a deep breath. ]

I thought we'd been through all this once already. I'm innocent. I didn't do any of those horrible things, not a single one -- all I did was look the part. I swear, I'm being honest, I'll tell you everything all over again if I need to.

[ that tremor isn't just in his voice, now. he's shaking. ]

You've got the wrong man. This is a mistake. Please, just let me go home.

If I'm going to take that claim as fact, then they're crimes you will commit in the future. The wardens don't bother making shit up; they have no reason to. Littering is just as heinous a crime to them as serial murder. If you weren't guilty of those crimes, they wouldn't be on your list.

In the future? I still don't have any reason for that.

[ frustrated neurotic baby sighs. ]

Why would they put littering on the same level as everything else? None of this makes much sense.

Because they're computer programs. Treating everything the same despite differing levels of severity or extenuating circumstances is more coldly logical than not.

Is there a chance you could have done these things and not remembered them? Amnesia, multiple personalities, etcetera?

[ rich scrubs a hand across his face. ]

Well, if it was due to amnesia, I wouldn't quite know. But it could be a possibility,

Charging someone with shit they don't even remember doing, that's just harsh.

If it makes you feel any better, hardly anyone here's gonna give a damn. We're in fuckin' Underwater Australia. No one here's innocent.

Now I'm going to be wondering how in the hell I could have done anything like that and not remembered.

...does help a bit, though. Thanks.

[ there's a pause as jim smugly contemplates how well this is panning out. it shows as rich trying to smooth out his hair and relax, finally unwinding enough for a tentative smile. ]

Mind if I ask your name? I'm Richard.

Bet you've learned a lot in that month, judging by the way you talk. Must not be too fun to have to learn the hard way, though.

Subtle.

Yeah, I've pieced shit together. What we really need is a prisonwide database of information we can just point the newbies at. [ He wonders what ever happened to that wiki Rebecca started. Note to self: Check into that. ]

Sounds like that'd be useful. Would it just be hosted on the network or would there be a better way to do it around here?

There's an intranet encyclopedia you can access via the computers in the educational center. It's been around for a couple weeks, but it hasn't really picked up.

Ah. Something I should probably check out, then. Not like I can contribute, though.

Not at the moment. Perhaps one day you'll be a tenured veteran too.

From the sounds of it, it's inevitable. [ shrug. ]
