[voice] ⛎ DAY 210
[A voice breaks the peace and quiet. It’s rather androgynous, rather rough from disuse, but loud and abrupt and demanding and bratty all the same.]

Whoa. This “crimes list” is fantastic. An outline of my accomplishments. Great and terrible. And I haven’t even done most of it yet?

But. “Cheating”? You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. I don’t cheat. Fix it. Put it right immediately. Maybe I’ll forget about your little “mistake.” And let you die quickly. Instead of slowly and painfully.

[And then Caliborn brushes it off, at least for now, because he has more important matters to attend to.]

Now. Where’s all my shit? Bring it to me.

I’m waiting.

It's a strong possibility.

Take the fact that we come from different points in time. If we're from the same timeline, then those of us who are from later spent at least some time interacting with the "clones" the wardens deposited to replace us. That possibility falls apart, though, when you consider that those "clones" still committed the crimes we were arrested for in the first place.

Another possibility is that upon our eventual escape, we return to the exact point in time we were taken from. The problem there is, those who came from later in the timeline didn't experience anyone from earlier on mentioning this place. That doesn't apply so much in our case, considering how little time has passed for each of us and how much we've had going on in the meantime, but people from other universes have reported the same phenomenon. It might be in our best interests to avoid spoiling each other on what's to come, but I doubt everyone is going to be that conscientious. Still, there's the additional possibility that we'll all have our memories erased. Which I don't like.

[ Blah blah blah. Stop him, please. ]

[You've come to the wrong cherub for having your babbling stifled.]

[In fact, she listens in rapt attention.]

I don't like that possibility, either, but it definitely can't be ruled out.

Of course, if we are from different timelines, that means that most of us, if not all of us, are doomed. [Calliope pauses as she is caught on the fact that she's likely going to die no matter what. The hope remained for a brief moment that maybe she is from a timeline where she succeeds and wins, but... no. She would still die, in the end.]

[It's only a brief moment before she continues.]

On second thought, I think I prefer the memory loss.

--yes. No doubt at all about that.

[She finishes off her sundae and gently pushes the container aside.]

[It's a bit weird and scary to think that her social world has been expanded beyond her four human friends, her brother, and the people of Prospit, but she knows that she has to push the point.]

Is that all we have to go off of? By that, I mean, are there any alternate theories floating about, no matter how peculiar, from um- other people?

I haven't heard any. But I've considered the possibility that we're actually clones, and this isn't a prison at all but some wacky social experiment.

That's... strange... but if that's the case, then at least we wouldn't have to worry about events going amiss.

Yeah. There still ain't really any way to know with the limited information we have available, though.

That's a pity.

[She looks at the empty ice cream container, absently, and then returns her gaze back to Dirk.]

I need to ask you to refrain from saying my name around him from now on.

... Not unless it's an emergency.

[She smiles a little.]

I'm just sorry to pull all of you into this mess.

Yes- well-...

[She idly drums her claws on the table.]

On that note, I think it's time that you escorted me "home," if you don't mind? I need my rest, and he needs to throw his tantrum.

Sure thing.

[ He stands up to clear the table. ] Hope you don't mind my reticence to reciprocate in showing you my place. If it was just you I'd probably invite you to stay with us.

Ah- no, I understand completely!

[The fact that he actually came out and said it, much less in that way, hurts her rather badly. But she fully understands.]

[Calliope hurries to help him.]

I'd rather see the four of you safe and sound.

[ He should probably be a little more tactful, but... what is Dirk being tactful, really.

Once the table is clean, he starts out the door. ]

We'll just have to hang out at your place.

Umm... I don't really know about that.

[Calliope tucks her hands behind her back, cringing self-consciously as they leave. Hopefully, no one sees her.]

[Being Calliope is definitely suffering.]

In public, then. There's plenty of places we can go. Man, you've never seen a movie at an actual theater before, have you? It's mind-blowing.

[The thought does cheer her up.] I can't even begin to imagine! And I'm glad that I won't have to.

Frankly, I've never done much of anything. Just being here is "mind-blowing" on its own.

[And she does! It turns out that Caliborn is really lazy, because she starts leading him to the apartment complex right in the sector. After she calls up her map to double-check that she's going the right way, anyway.]

I do hope so.

What are the other people around here like? I haven't had a chance to speak with anyone new, given all the fussing I've had to do over my brother.

[ Well, that's easy enough. ]

Surprisingly cordial, considering everyone here's a convicted criminal. Bunch of murderers, but they're pretty nice. They like throwing parties and teaching classes, which, let's face it, there ain't a lot else to do around here.

Maybe it's because I've only just arrived, but I can't imagine being bored by that.

[She stretches a bit as they walk. Calliope is finding it hard to fully wrap her mind around the idea of "other people" being a thing, and she finds herself continuously framing everything in terms of either her friends, or the idea of troll culture, and she knows she needs to try and broaden her horizons.]

[But it's also really hard to do.]

Have you picked up any new hobbies, dear?

[ Over the past month or so, Dirk's learned to not be skittish in public. But that doesn't mean he really likes it. His eyes keep darting to and fro. ]

I've been trying painting, actually? It's a lot more difficult than drawing on a tablet, but I've been getting the hang of it. You should try it if you get the chance.

Most definitely! I can't wait to see what sorts of supplies there are to work with.

May I see your paintings, sometime?

[ He walks slightly behind her, glancing down sheepishly. Out of all the people he knows, she's the only one he feels awkward showing his art to. ]

I... guess? I don't really have a choice in the matter, they're being displayed publicly.
