Day 209 ✝ Action
✝ Action with Spencer Reid
Derek smiled brightly when he saw Reid walk into the athletic complex almost right on time to when they’d agreed to meet. He’d almost expected him to find an excuse not to show since this wasn’t really Reid’s thing, so he was really more than happy that he did. He’d wanted some time with his friend to see how he was really doing and this was as good excuse as any without being overly obvious that he was checking up on him. Reid could really just be happy that Derek wasn’t busting down his door again and pushing his way in. Improvement? Yes. Never let it be said that Derek couldn’t grow and change… kind of.

He stood up from the chair he’d been sitting in and picked up his bag. He’d already claimed a room to work in, like he usually did. One hand clapped down on Reid’s shoulder and squeezed. “Hey pretty boy. Almost thought you might not show.”

✝ Action with Rogue
For weeks now Derek and Rogue had been working privately with each other. It was actually working with her that had made him think about giving more lessons in self-defense… maybe even starting a class. But it was still just an idea he was toying with more than one he was actually putting into motion. Not that he would turn down anyone who wanted to learn or spar. He just wasn’t advertising it yet.

He was in his normal room that he occupied with a nice mat on a part of the floor. When Rogue came in, he smiled in her direction. “Hey, pretty girl. Doin’ alright? You get caught up in that mess yesterday?”

✝ Open Action for anyone and everyone
For the better part of the morning Derek will be at the Athletic Complex in Sector one. He’ll probably break for lunch and then head into the Defense Force Headquarters in Sector Two for a bit to do some work. Anyone is free to run into him in either place or in the in-between.

This is... something isn't right here and for once he's not trying to stall when he doesn't follow Morgan's directions. Brows furrowed in confusion he gives Morgan a long look and when he speaks it's with great uncertainty — this is something they should've talked about weeks ago, Kitty was surprised when he told her they hadn't... and maybe he didn't want to bring it up for this very reason.

"Ian Doyle..?" He shifts his weight. "Ian Doyle is dead."

Derek stops what he's doing, looking over to Reid. He holds the punching bag in both hands, shaking his head. "What are you talkin' about? I'm still huntin' his ass down back home."

"But we-"

We saw him die. We were there. That's what he wants to say but the realization of what's going on here is already creeping up on him.

"Morgan... what's the last thing you remember from home?"

Derek dipped his head, stepping back away from the punching bag to grab his towel and wipe it over the back of his neck. He exhaled a deep breath as he did so, turning away from Reid. "Emily's funeral a few weeks ago."

Of course, it only takes him a few seconds to add two and two and reach four. His head snaps up and he looks back to Reid. "You're from a different timeline? We got Doyle?"

"Emily's..." He stops himself there to take a steadying breath. Oh boy. This is going to be tough, even more so since he's barely recovered from the shock himself. After all that time being furious with JJ, he now finds himself in exactly the same position — revealing a truth that brings betrayal.

"That was seven months ago. A lot happened since then, but... there's something you should know before I get into all that." Softly, full of hesitation and he pauses to shift his weight, eyes stubbornly kept on Morgan even if he'd much rather have them focused on anything but that.

"Emily didn't die."

The shock of that statement was evident on Derek's face as his brows lifted, eyes wide and his jaw dropped just slightly. He just stood there, staring at Reid as he waited for the punch line, waited for more. If he could look pale, he would. He could literally feel the blood drain from his face, his heartbeat suddenly beating up in his ears as he remembered holding onto Emily in those last moments before the ambulance had come, sitting in a waiting room at the hospital, Hotch and J.J. telling them about her death.

"Reid..." It was the only word he could get out. Because if this was a joke, he wanted Reid to get it over with now. And then he wanted to hit him for even trying it... or hit something. Reid was probably lucky there was a punching bag right here.

No joke, but the sharp change in atmosphere is enough to leave him nervous in any case. This is by no means better than how he found out — maybe it's even worse because so few of them are here. Maybe that's why he hasn't brought it up, hasn't figured out if they're separated by time at all, because he doesn't want to know what lies in the future and he definitely doesn't want to be the one explaining a past the others have yet to experience.

"Morgan... they didn't tell us." He swallows, shifting his weight uncomfortably. "Hotch and JJ... they knew all along and never told us. They needed us to believe that she really had died and one day she just... walked into the briefing room. Just like that."

Another pause to let it sink in and when he speaks up again his voice is frailer than he'd like. It wasn't that long ago that it happened. Not for him.

"I'm sorry."

For another few moments he just stares. Hotch and JJ had lied. In those few seconds it felt like everything in Derek zeroed in on that one fact. And then... are those tears that settle in his eyes? The whites turning a tale-tell pink. It's probably hard to tell unless Reid was paying attention that closely because then Derek turns away, his right fist colliding with a sickening crack against the wall by the punching bag because the wall would hurt more.

One. Two. Three. Four punches. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine punches. And ten.

The wall is smeared with a pinkish tint with the cracks he'd left in the skin on his knuckles. He draws a few, deep and heavy breaths. Then he turns to walk past Reid, grabbing his gym bag on the way out without saying a word.

He notices all too well, perhaps because he expected it and perhaps because the tension in the room is forcing him to be hyper-aware, practically holding his breath as he waits for it to break. Each punch against the wall makes him flinch but he doesn't say anything, just waits for it to pass, waits for the right moment to pick this up despite knowing fully well that it'll never come.

"Morgan-!" A small attempt to stop the other Agent, but he cuts it short. It won't do any good. Not now, so instead he falls silent, bottom lip pinched near the point of bleeding between his teeth.
