Day 209 ✝ Action
✝ Action with Spencer Reid
Derek smiled brightly when he saw Reid walk into the athletic complex almost right on time to when they’d agreed to meet. He’d almost expected him to find an excuse not to show since this wasn’t really Reid’s thing, so he was really more than happy that he did. He’d wanted some time with his friend to see how he was really doing and this was as good excuse as any without being overly obvious that he was checking up on him. Reid could really just be happy that Derek wasn’t busting down his door again and pushing his way in. Improvement? Yes. Never let it be said that Derek couldn’t grow and change… kind of.

He stood up from the chair he’d been sitting in and picked up his bag. He’d already claimed a room to work in, like he usually did. One hand clapped down on Reid’s shoulder and squeezed. “Hey pretty boy. Almost thought you might not show.”

✝ Action with Rogue
For weeks now Derek and Rogue had been working privately with each other. It was actually working with her that had made him think about giving more lessons in self-defense… maybe even starting a class. But it was still just an idea he was toying with more than one he was actually putting into motion. Not that he would turn down anyone who wanted to learn or spar. He just wasn’t advertising it yet.

He was in his normal room that he occupied with a nice mat on a part of the floor. When Rogue came in, he smiled in her direction. “Hey, pretty girl. Doin’ alright? You get caught up in that mess yesterday?”

✝ Open Action for anyone and everyone
For the better part of the morning Derek will be at the Athletic Complex in Sector one. He’ll probably break for lunch and then head into the Defense Force Headquarters in Sector Two for a bit to do some work. Anyone is free to run into him in either place or in the in-between.

Derek moved to sit down next to Reid, leaving enough space between them to give them both room. He put his legs straight out in front of him and leaned over to grab his toes. "Just copy me. Stretch the pose as far as you can go, back, torso, legs."

He paused, holding the pose for a few seconds before he brought a leg up and crossed it over the other. Then he turned his shoulders in the opposite direction. "Hotch reminds me of myself when I first got here. You get that same 'maybe I'm too resigned to this place' feelin' around him?"

Reid may not be all that keen on physical exercise but when he's agreed to it, he's at least smart enough to pay attention and that is exactly what he does, carefully copying Morgan's movements while being careful not to hurt himself. He's not nearly as flexible, but he's doing alright for a skinny nerd.

"I had that feeling when Garcia showed up." A tad strained, but the chit-chat is a nice distraction from the discomfort. "I think it's pretty unavoidable... maybe we're forced to adapt quicker here, but I don't think it's that different from being desensitized around a crime scene."

"Speaking of Garcia, you should know we're tryin' a thing. Relationship-wise." He wouldn't be surprised if Reid already knew this information. But he figured he should tell him anyway. Derek turned the other way, stretching the other leg out and crossing the other over, turning the other direction.

"But as far as Hotch is concerned, you're probably right. He's got Jack though... I think it'll be harder for him to accept. Hell, there are some days I still don't accept it and wanna break some doors down to get outta here. You've got your mom and I've got my mom and sisters, but... Jack's his son. I just don't see him accepting this." And it worried him. Because, as always, he was the protective sort, and he knew that an obsession with getting out of here could lead to bad things for someone he cares about.

"Yeah, I uh... I knew. Garcia told me a while back."

Still so very unsure how to feel about that, as Morgan can probably tell. It's not that he disapproves per se but rather that he didn't see it coming. They're family. Maybe it shouldn't be as weird as he thinks it is, but it'll definitely take some getting used to. A part of him also wonders how much of that conversation that made its way back to Morgan, but he quickly pushes those thoughts aside.

"He doesn't have much of a choice..." But of course he understands that it's not that easy. Morgan is right, it's different when you're a parent and so he lets the protest go unfinished. "All the more reason for us to work on finding a way back sooner rather than later. "

"We're takin' it slow... maybe too slow but I think we're both... we both wanna do it right if it's gonna be done, you know?" And honestly, Derek had trust issues among many other insecurities that he kept well hidden, and never wanted to hurt Penelope. So going very slow was a good plan for them. Back home, it was something he wouldn't consider beyond just thinking about it now and then. But here was somehow different. And maybe the fact that they were both open to it had helped him in settling in just a bit.

"And about that... I talked to Kitty about sector six." He glanced over to Reid. "I think we're gonna investigate it further. I've got this theory about it... that maybe something's hidden in there."

He nods again. They've had their rare moments of man-to-man talk in the past but Morgan had always been the guy who never settled down and so Reid is having some adjustment problems. Relationships in general hadn't really been a part of his life other than in a purely academical sense until just recently. Hopefully it's okay if he just moves on to a safer topic.

"Sector 6..?" Thoughtfully. "Maybe... in the last facility, the elevator to the lower levels was located in one of the buildings. Of course, that doesn't mean it's the same here. For all we know, the "inmates" of that sector are more like security guards."

A pause. He knows Kitty wouldn't allow him to join in and truth be told, he doesn't particularly care to but if there's one place they should have a closer look at...

"When are you planning to go?"

“Yeah, there’s just no other logical reason for the Warden’s to put them in here with us when they’re dangerous to us. Obviously there are other facilities like this one that they could be kept in. We were moved from one. I bet there are more. I feel like there’s something in there…” His voice trailed off. He hadn’t missed how Reid had changed the subject about

He folds his legs up and lets them relax down so the soles of his feet are pressed together, then he starts to roll his shoulders and his neck, then stretches his shoulders back and then forward. “No set date yet. I have to hold a meeting of the Investigative team and get a list of things we might be lookin’ for. Then get that to Kitty so she can put together groups to form a grid search of the sector.”

He nods again, surprisingly relieved at the level of preparation they've got going here. It should be expected really, they're professionals after all but Sector 6 is right there and he wouldn't have been surprised if they just went ahead and... did it.

"Good, good..." Struggling a little to keep up with the movements, but he's trying best he can. "Oh, by the way... I met someone yesterday who was interested in joining. Rose? I don't know if you've met her, but I told her I could set up a meeting at least."

"I know two Roses. One... Rose Tyler and another Rose I just met today. And now that I think of it they both have British accents. One's a blonde though and the other more of a brunette." Leave it to Derek to boil the distinctions down to hair color. Hey, he notices pretty girls, okay?

"I'll make sure to leave the meeting open to those who are interested in joining the Investigative team too though." He adds.

"Oh, it was the other Rose... though I'm sure Rose Tyler would be interested in joining either way, seeing as the Doctor is already in."

Can you hear that slightly higher pitch in his voice? That's the fanboy in him, yawning and stretching his legs. Talking to Rose Tyler is definitely on the top ten of coolest things to do in underwater prison and he should definitely do it more, but that's not the point of this exercise.

"I'll pass that on. I'm not sure if she's qualified but she helped me a lot yesterday. Seems to have the right idea about things at least... Sam probably agrees."

"Sam... Winchester?" He has to ask because he wasn't really sure what Sam had to do with the conversation they were having at the moment. So some clarification was needed.

“I’ll talk to her about it.” Derek finally stands up and holds out a hand to help Reid up to his feet. He lets his body stretch once more, rolling his shoulders and arms and bringing them across his body. “So I’ve got a hypothetical question for you.”

He starts over toward a heavy punching bag in the corner of the room, expecting Reid to follow and rolls it out away from the wall a bit. “We’re gonna start with this before I let you start hittin’ on me.”

It was a good expectation — he does follow, although that insecurity is coming back full force now that they're changing activities. Stretching he can do. Stretching has nothing with strength or stamina and even if he isn't as limber as some, he can follow along just fine. This? This is something else.

"A hypothetical question..?" Yep. Definitely stalling.

"Yeah. Watch my form." Derek pulled his bottom lip thoughtfully through his teeth before dropping into stance, fists at ready. Then, with precision, he landed several right-handed punches on the punching bag, all the same, all repetitive just so that Reid could see his movements. As he did this, he spoke. "So the theory is that clones of us get sent back home. You think they get there with all of our memories, experiences, motivations? All of that?"

The distraction is more than welcome and although he's paying rapt attention, he needs something else to think about or he'll performance-anxiety himself an injury.

"Well... they'd have to, wouldn't they? I mean, if we assume that what the wardens are telling us is true then no one that knows us back home would be able to tell the difference between the real us and the alleged clone. They need to have our memories, our experiences, behavioral patterns, speech quirks, taste in food, music, movies... the works. They'd have to be perfect replicas and even more so they'd need to ease out of our... criminal path or someone would know that they're not us."

He pauses. This is actually something he's been thinking about lately. He hit thirty a few weeks back and that... well. Let's just say it brought up some questions.

"If I suddenly decided to quit the FBI... you wouldn't just accept that, would you? I mean, you'd wonder what happened to make me make such a sudden decision."

To Derek, this was kind of a relief. What might have been disturbing, made him feel a little better about another him being back at home. That meant someone was still watching out for his sisters, the BAU team, his mom... And someone was still doing what he'd left in the middle of doing.

"Long as there's still a chance for me to get that son of a bitch Ian Doyle and put him away for good." Avenging Emily's death? Yeah, that was on the top of his priority list when he'd been brought here. He'd been deeply involved in it as a matter of fact, somewhat secretly.

At the mention of Ian Doyle, his punches get harder, muscles straining and his brow furrowed until he steps back. "Alright. You try it."

This is... something isn't right here and for once he's not trying to stall when he doesn't follow Morgan's directions. Brows furrowed in confusion he gives Morgan a long look and when he speaks it's with great uncertainty — this is something they should've talked about weeks ago, Kitty was surprised when he told her they hadn't... and maybe he didn't want to bring it up for this very reason.

"Ian Doyle..?" He shifts his weight. "Ian Doyle is dead."

"But we-"

We saw him die. We were there. That's what he wants to say but the realization of what's going on here is already creeping up on him.

"Morgan... what's the last thing you remember from home?"

Derek dipped his head, stepping back away from the punching bag to grab his towel and wipe it over the back of his neck. He exhaled a deep breath as he did so, turning away from Reid. "Emily's funeral a few weeks ago."

Of course, it only takes him a few seconds to add two and two and reach four. His head snaps up and he looks back to Reid. "You're from a different timeline? We got Doyle?"

"Emily's..." He stops himself there to take a steadying breath. Oh boy. This is going to be tough, even more so since he's barely recovered from the shock himself. After all that time being furious with JJ, he now finds himself in exactly the same position — revealing a truth that brings betrayal.

"That was seven months ago. A lot happened since then, but... there's something you should know before I get into all that." Softly, full of hesitation and he pauses to shift his weight, eyes stubbornly kept on Morgan even if he'd much rather have them focused on anything but that.

"Emily didn't die."

The shock of that statement was evident on Derek's face as his brows lifted, eyes wide and his jaw dropped just slightly. He just stood there, staring at Reid as he waited for the punch line, waited for more. If he could look pale, he would. He could literally feel the blood drain from his face, his heartbeat suddenly beating up in his ears as he remembered holding onto Emily in those last moments before the ambulance had come, sitting in a waiting room at the hospital, Hotch and J.J. telling them about her death.

"Reid..." It was the only word he could get out. Because if this was a joke, he wanted Reid to get it over with now. And then he wanted to hit him for even trying it... or hit something. Reid was probably lucky there was a punching bag right here.

No joke, but the sharp change in atmosphere is enough to leave him nervous in any case. This is by no means better than how he found out — maybe it's even worse because so few of them are here. Maybe that's why he hasn't brought it up, hasn't figured out if they're separated by time at all, because he doesn't want to know what lies in the future and he definitely doesn't want to be the one explaining a past the others have yet to experience.

"Morgan... they didn't tell us." He swallows, shifting his weight uncomfortably. "Hotch and JJ... they knew all along and never told us. They needed us to believe that she really had died and one day she just... walked into the briefing room. Just like that."

Another pause to let it sink in and when he speaks up again his voice is frailer than he'd like. It wasn't that long ago that it happened. Not for him.

"I'm sorry."

For another few moments he just stares. Hotch and JJ had lied. In those few seconds it felt like everything in Derek zeroed in on that one fact. And then... are those tears that settle in his eyes? The whites turning a tale-tell pink. It's probably hard to tell unless Reid was paying attention that closely because then Derek turns away, his right fist colliding with a sickening crack against the wall by the punching bag because the wall would hurt more.

One. Two. Three. Four punches. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine punches. And ten.

The wall is smeared with a pinkish tint with the cracks he'd left in the skin on his knuckles. He draws a few, deep and heavy breaths. Then he turns to walk past Reid, grabbing his gym bag on the way out without saying a word.
