DAY 207 ☆ VOICE
It's occurred to me that we're all stuck. Literally. I realize that I'm really slow with not having noticed this sooner. I'll admit, I'm oblivious and don't notice a lot of things, even when they're right in front of me.

What I've realized is that all the future plans Kaoru and I were making together, the accomplishments we have set for ourselves, none of them can be achieved here. We can't reach any of our goals here. Not only do I not have Kaoru, but the things we wanted to do with our lives aren't doable here. One may say that it's just not true; absolutely anything is possible if you have the determination to make it so. But that's not at all what I mean.

I can't possibly turn this place into anything we've ever fantisized about, and for what reason should I bother? We don't need to do anything here other than exist. I don't understand why anyone chooses to become a business owner in this place. Is it only to have something to do? Is it because you were a business owner back home, and it's your way of attempting to make this place feel more like home? There couldn't possibly be anything else to gain from putting in work of that level.

...How long have you been here? You sound like you've been stuck in this place for years.

[Why else would you sound so jaded?]

I arrived on Day 15. A number of months ago I was out of the dome for couple weeks, but it wasn't long enough to make much of a difference. It feels like I've never left at all.

So you haven't even been here a year yet? Come on, don't act like everything's set in stone. Have you ever heard stories about guys breaking out of jail back home? They usually plan for...years!

I'm sure getting stuck in here for so long sucks, but we're not even on Day 365 yet.

[And this coming from the kid who thinks waiting a couple hours is waiting for an eternity. Dick has always been impatient, but he's not giving up on getting out. Something has to happen to change things in the prison. They just haven't had the opportunity yet.]

It could take us a year or two, but I'm not sticking around and I don't see why anyone else would give in about it either.

It feels like it's been three years! At any rate, while I'm not familiar with many such stories other than in fiction, I know I certainly don't want to stick around for a long time either. So... I'm still not sure what can be done, but someone will figure something out one day, I'm sure.

It probably feels like forever because we never have much to do around here. If they kept us busy, then the days wouldn't drag on forever.

But something has to come up eventually. If I have to turn a year older in this place I'm demanding a refund on my birthday.

Yeah... I've been keeping myself pretty busy as is, but it's only a matter of time before I get bored of the routine.

[He siiighs.]

I know what you mean. I understand completely! And I couldn't even do that because my birthday didn't even feel like my birthday, therefore it was lame!

I totally get that. I've only been around a month and some of the stuff I used to do got boring really fast. That's why I asked Connie for the trapeze. I can never get bored on that.

[Now Dick is curious.] You had a birthday here? How did you know what day it was?

It was mostly my assumption this place runs on a regular, 365 day calendar year, therefore my birthday would be on the 160th day of the year. But since we have yet to pass 365 days, no one can be sure if we'll get another year after 365 days, or if it will go on forever.

Huh...that's not actually a bad idea I guess. But what do you do about leap years?

I don't know. I haven't figured out. I went with whether or not it was a leap year back home, but beyond that, I'm not sure.

Man, keeping time around here is just too complicated. We better get out of here before the next one comes around. I'm not trying to figure out how that works.

[Dick will never understand how anyone manages it.]

So what do you usually do to keep busy?

It really is. Seasons are all ruined. Holidays are ruined. Because of that, the wardens make up holidays. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just that... I want the holidays I'm familiar with, damn it! Even though I'm aware of the fact that not everyone celebrates Japanese or American holidays and the like.

[He hums!]

I create things: Drawings, paintings, clothing. I'm also part of a baseball team, so I practice every couple days with the teams. Sometimes I read or play video games. Stuff like that.

Yeah! I want Christmas, not a holiday about socks or something.

[And boy did Hikaru catch Dick's attention.]

There's a baseball team? How'd I miss a baseball team? Guess that's why we have a full diamond out by the athletic center, huh? Do you guys play matches?

Yes, there indeed is a baseball team!

[He claps!]

Yes we do! If you're interested in joining, Yuuri is your guy! He's in charge of everything! I could also let him know you're interested and get back to you, if you would like!

Yuuri is my roommate! Baseball is probably one of his favorite things, so he's really into it. He's a good guy — Fun to tease, too. [He chuckles!]

Cool. I'll have to meet him! Which team is winning so far? [he said there are matches so there must be more than one team, right?]

Well... [As much as it pains him to say this!] Yuuri's team, The Purple Dragons, have won 2 our of 3 games. But I'm not going to let them take the next game!

Purple Dragons? Who came up with that name?

I don't know. I had nothing to do with the naming of either team.

Someone should tell them to rethink letting that guy name anything ever again.
