DAY 207 ☆ VOICE
It's occurred to me that we're all stuck. Literally. I realize that I'm really slow with not having noticed this sooner. I'll admit, I'm oblivious and don't notice a lot of things, even when they're right in front of me.

What I've realized is that all the future plans Kaoru and I were making together, the accomplishments we have set for ourselves, none of them can be achieved here. We can't reach any of our goals here. Not only do I not have Kaoru, but the things we wanted to do with our lives aren't doable here. One may say that it's just not true; absolutely anything is possible if you have the determination to make it so. But that's not at all what I mean.

I can't possibly turn this place into anything we've ever fantisized about, and for what reason should I bother? We don't need to do anything here other than exist. I don't understand why anyone chooses to become a business owner in this place. Is it only to have something to do? Is it because you were a business owner back home, and it's your way of attempting to make this place feel more like home? There couldn't possibly be anything else to gain from putting in work of that level.

That's true. As rare as they may be, I have my moments, I guess.

For what it's worth, I agree. Existence here is stagnant at best. There's no point to anything we do.

Mm. I can't believe it took me a number of months to figure it out! When we moved to the new location, I raved about this place. Now I'm realizing it really is a prison!

Maybe just being able to do something, anything at all, is the one thing that can keep that person going on. Even...in a limited place like this one.

I guess so. It is the reason I get involved with numerous activities. I guess it's just that owning a business in a moneyless place seems like too much work for nothing.

Couldn't you say that about attending the school, too?

[Ah- though...]

But running a business and doing those things earns rehabilitation points, too.

School is challenging up to a point, but I can't imagine it's anything like owning a business and doing a lot of manual labor. And honestly, I wonder if rehabilitation points really do anything. I can't help but to feel they're probably some sort of faux bait to put the inmates to work.

I was a business owner back home an' Merlotte's was my place, I put a lotta work inta makin' it mine an' bringin' it t'life. Now I'm here an' I brought it here th' only way I knew how. They're tellin' us we're here for life an' if that's true than I want t'make it more like home. It helps t'make this place more bearable not only for me, but fer others too.

That was also my point of openin' up a business here. T'give others a place t'go t'feel welcome an' relaxed an'more like they're home. So fer me there's lots t'gain from doin' it. I'm happier this way an' I can give that happiness t'others.

Might sound cheesy that way but it's true. An' even if I do leave then maybe I've at least made my mark here. People will remember me an' hopefully this place will keep goin' without me.

As for your plans, it's up t'you what ya do. Th' point is t'keep livin' any way ya can be happy doin' it.

[Hikaru listens quietly, nodding to himself (not that Sam can see!)]

That's a great point. Leaving a mark is what my brother and I had plans to do one way or another. I guess I was thinking about it in the wrong way. Yeah, my brother and I are from a wealthy family, and I decided trying to achieve and keep the Hitachiin name alive here would be a waste when there are no funds or lavish items like we're used to. But leaving a mark is important to me — us — as well. I'm sure I've accomplished that in a number of ways here with some fashion creations that have come to life — I should continue to leave my mark so that the Hitachiin name is known and remembered here too, should I ever disappear from this place.

I arrived on Day 15. A number of months ago I was out of the dome for couple weeks, but it wasn't long enough to make much of a difference. It feels like I've never left at all.

So you haven't even been here a year yet? Come on, don't act like everything's set in stone. Have you ever heard stories about guys breaking out of jail back home? They usually plan for...years!

I'm sure getting stuck in here for so long sucks, but we're not even on Day 365 yet.

[And this coming from the kid who thinks waiting a couple hours is waiting for an eternity. Dick has always been impatient, but he's not giving up on getting out. Something has to happen to change things in the prison. They just haven't had the opportunity yet.]

It could take us a year or two, but I'm not sticking around and I don't see why anyone else would give in about it either.

It feels like it's been three years! At any rate, while I'm not familiar with many such stories other than in fiction, I know I certainly don't want to stick around for a long time either. So... I'm still not sure what can be done, but someone will figure something out one day, I'm sure.

It probably feels like forever because we never have much to do around here. If they kept us busy, then the days wouldn't drag on forever.

But something has to come up eventually. If I have to turn a year older in this place I'm demanding a refund on my birthday.

Yeah... I've been keeping myself pretty busy as is, but it's only a matter of time before I get bored of the routine.

[He siiighs.]

I know what you mean. I understand completely! And I couldn't even do that because my birthday didn't even feel like my birthday, therefore it was lame!
