207 ✝ Criminology Class ✝ Open to All
[It’s Criminology Class time! And standing at the front of the class is not Doctor Spencer Reid. Nope. It’s Derek Morgan. He’s even sort of dressed up for the occasion in what he’d usually wear to the office back home, nice dress pants and a dress shirt. He looks completely confident up there, used to speaking in front of groups of people even if he usually has the support of other members of the BAU with him. This time he’s alone. And he’s okay with that. Reid asked him to do this next class and Derek was happy to oblige.]

Alright, let’s get this thing going. [It’s said loud enough to be heard among the chatter of the attendees. Once it’s quiet, he offers up one of his most charming smiles at the room.] As you can probably tell, I’m not Doctor Reid. But for those of you who don’t know, he and I work together back home where I’m Supervisory Special Agent Morgan. Here in the prison I’m just Derek Morgan. You can call me Derek or Morgan. Just none of that Mister stuff or you’ll make me feel old. Here in the prison I run the Investigative Team on the Defense Force and patrol Sector One. Anyway, Reid’s asked me to teach this class on one of my areas of special interest, obsessions… or more accurately, crimes of obsession. So let’s get started.

SPECIALIZED CRIME LECTURE – Obsession

The definition of obsession in regards to psychology: the inability of a person to stop thinking about a particular topic or feeling a certain emotion without a high amount of anxiety.

Now usually obsession can be harmless. We’ve all been there at some point, obsessed with a particular television show, or a musician we love, obsessed with a project at work or a really good book series. We can be obsessed with any number of things. These obsessions can even motivate and inspire us to do amazing things. Much of the world’s greatest artwork or literature was sparked by an obsession. Some the greatest inventions ever created have come from an obsession. Think of Michelangelo and most of his life’s work or the Wright Brothers and their obsession with flight as examples. Good things can come from obsession.

Bad things can come from obsession too. There is no real definitive line that if crossed makes a harmless obsession become a dangerous one. You can’t convict somebody for thinking about something too much. You can profile someone and make all the predictions in the world, but you still can’t put somebody behind bars for a crime they might eventually commit. Everyone’s different. Each case is different. Some people snap. Some people don’t. The only certainty of obsession going bad is sadly when an actual crime is committed… after the fact.

But what changed? What makes someone take a fixation on something and turn it into an enactment of something illegal? In profiling we call this a stressor, something that tipped the scales from the logical to the illogical, from harmless to harmful, from reality to a fantasy world where that one thing that was holding that anxiety in check has become warped and damaged in a way that that person in turn becomes a danger to the people around them and society in general. This stressor could be any number of things from a change in the unsub’s personal life to a change in the object of their obsession.

At their core, beneath all the details specific to a certain case, obsessive crimes are about a loss of control over something that was previously thought to be under complete control. Even if that control was an illusion to the person who committed the crime, it was still control from their perspective. And to them, their response to that loss of control is completely legitimate, completely rational. To them, everyone else is the ones who don’t see reason. It’s everyone else who’s being irrational.

One person’s reality is another person’s craziness… and vice versa… [He seems to drift off in thought for a moment, not accustomed to teaching classes by himself. Normally another of his team would pick up where he’d become lost in a thought. But here and now, there’s nothing… just a few seconds of silence before he takes a deep breath and is back in the moment.]

In fact, most crimes of obsession end with a high fatality count, including that of the unsub. And those few cases where we might have the opportunity to talk the unsub down, the best tactical solution is to talk to them as if their perception is the right perception. You’ve gotta get them to believe that you believe them, that they’re right, that you’re on their side. You have to enter their warped world to get them to take that first step back into reality.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION – Open Discussion

Alright. [Derek claps his hands and rubs them together, looking around the class.] Doctor Reid usually does a practical application here at the end of the lecture. So for this class, I think you should just talk among yourselves about what your obsessions are or maybe some of the obsessions you’ve seen other people have. Use your imagination. Profile the obsession. Could it ever be warped in a way that would make you or someone else do things that you wouldn’t normally do? How obsessed are you? What could push you over the edge? And what would happen in the aftermath? How would you stop someone who’s reached that breaking point?

Good class. Thanks for coming.

Q&A

[ A Q&A thread can be found here for all your question-based needs! There is also a suggestions box available — just note that your character is dropping a note in the box in the subject header and it will be brought up during the next class! ]

“What if there’s chocolate coffee? Cause maybe that could be a thing. I bet they could flavor it in a chocolate kind of way. You do know that some coffees can taste like dessert, right?” Listen to her, Peter. She’s a professional. And she’s also good at bringing people over to the dark side… if the dark side weren’t so dark and were more about things that are fun and awesome.

“I’d probably fall off of a skateboard if I tried to ride one. Not to say that I don’t totally expect you to let me try it when and if you get one… as long as you’re cool with me being clumsy and awkward on it in this hypothetical scenario.” Plus if she makes him agree to letting her try a skateboard, it means they’ll potentially run into each other again. “Cross-species genetics sounds kind of cool… and specific. You mean like giving an owl the scent glands of a bloodhound so that not only can he rock the awesome night vision but also he can smell a june bug from a mile away?”

"LIke a mocha?" He likes mochas. He just doesn't indulge in them very often because he wants to bounce off the walls when he does, quite literally.

"No, you'd do okay. You should definitely try it when I get one. I'll teach you." He thinks, in theory he'd be great at helping someone learn to skateboard. Of course if he could use his webbing to keep her on track, he'd be a lot better but that would mean exposing who he is. "Yeah, sort of. More like giving a human the scent glands of a bloodhound."

“Like a mocha. I bet they have just plain chocolate milk if that’s what you want. But some day, I’m gonna get on one of my food experimentation kicks and make you a chocolate coffee. You’d be surprised the amazingness you can do with Hershey’s syrup, milk and a bag of sugar.” Well, now Peter should be afraid because this is going to happen. And people have ended up with sugar comas from Dawn’s food experiments.

Outside of the building, Dawn barely even pauses before she turns in the direction of the coffee shop. She has a radar where these places are concerned. She feels like she’s scored by getting him to agree to teach her to skateboard and that brings about a silly kind of smile. “So like… giving a human supernatural abilities… but more of the artificial kind than the big whopping destiny and magical kind? Huh. I’m not sure that’s ever turned out well as far as I know.”

"I really like chocolate milk." It's important she know this up front. "Food experimentation kicks?" This does concern him, but it's also interesting. Peter approaches most things with a certain amount of curiosity.

He's content to trust her and follow since he hasn't figured out exactly where everything is in relation to everything else "Right. It's got medical uses though. When a person gets Parkinson's disease it's because they've started to lose the cells in their brain that produce dopamine. The zebrafish can regenerate cells. If we could give a Parkinson's patient that ability, they wouldn't have Parkinson's anymore. Certain lizards and starfish can regrow their tails and limbs. If we could give a war veteran that's lost a limb that ability, they wouldn't need prosthetics." He hesitates and nods. "Yeah...it's a pretty delicate balance, but I've heard there's at least one case where it did work. It was just sort...accidental and we're not sure how to replicate it."

"Yeah, sometimes I get in these moods where I mix foods that don't normally get mixed. It can be dangerous but sometimes it turns out surprisingly amazing." It was something she'd always done, but only really grew into something she did regularly when she was home alone so much after her mom had died. The strangest things can be nurtured out of loneliness and boredom.

She listens intently, nodding and really amazed that he doesn't just talk the talk. He seems to know his stuff in this area. It's actually pretty cool. "I'm impressed. You actually know stuff. I like knowledge." She pauses. I like knowledge? "I mean... knowledge is cool... learning things, knowing things. Age of the geek?" She shakes her head. "I don't think there's any way to make myself sound super cool after saying all that."

"Like...peas and macaroni and cheese?" People deal with grief and loneliness in different ways. He understands this more than a lot of people.

He's a true science nerd. He laughs at her phrasing and lifts one shoulder in a sort of shrug. "Hey, it'd make my social life a lot better. The whole age of the geek thing." He grins at her a bit. "No, you're right. Learning things and knowing things is cool. A lot of people don't agree, but I always have."

"Exactly like peas and mac and cheese. I'm totally gonna be trying that now by the way. It sounds awesome... in theory." Of course now she's wondering if he's actually tried that before, which would make him into mixing weird things together too, which she would find completely adorable. "Is that... a thing you do too? The whole mixing foods together thing?"

There's the scent of coffee coming from a small building they're approaching, obviously a coffee shop. "Are you kidding? With that smile? I bet you bring all the girls to the party." And then since she can't believe she said that. "I mean uhm... I'm not a lot of people. Open mouth insert foot."

"Usually just when I'm eating them, like I'll dump mac and cheese on top of meatloaf so I only have to have one plate." He is notorias for eating a jumble of leftovers at once regardless of what they are. He really will eat most anything.

The smell of coffee is one of those familiar, comforting smells. He likes coffee shops. He blushes a bit and shakes his head at her. "No. N-no. Really. Not. Uhm...no. I--yeah. No." He looks up at her and grins. "Thanks though. You though--I bet you're...I mean in you're in college and you've got--you're tall and not that I'm--pretty, but you know--that."

"That's kind of ingenious. I mean it's all going to the same place in the end, right? I usually have a food heirarchy on my plate. Like I start with the thing I like least and then work my way to the thing I like best. That way you always end on the best of all the available foods." She's kind of wondering how these profilers who teach the criminology class would analyze the way she and Peter eat, like what does it say about them? Maybe she doesn't wanna know.

This time Dawn opens the door for him and they go inside the coffee shop. It really is one of the best smells. She grins and ducks her head as they get in line at the counter. It's such a relief that he gets rambley and awkward with the words just like she does. She doesn't think she's ever met anyone who does that as much as she does. "Not really but... well my sister gets all the cute boys. And I've had... way bad experiences with boys. I mean I though the last one might be good but... it went bad cause of here. So... I'm two for two in the boyfriend experience going bad department."

"Exactly and who actually savors the individual flavors of each food?" What he really means is who slows down in the eating process to taste the individual foods. "Nah, see I just eat everything at once. Except dessert. I usually eat my dessert separate." Yeah, Peter doesn't want to know either. He's already pretty sure the profiler teaching this criminology class thinks he's a criminal.

Yeah, he gets rambley around pretty girls. He's lucky to get actual words out sometimes. He also does lots of stopping and starting, not quite stuttering, but pausing and repeating words. He shakes his head, looking down at his feet and going a bit more somber at her words. "Yeah...uhm...that's--that's--actually I don't know if you're doing better than me, or worse. I'm sort of...one for one in the bad experience race."

He got Gwen's dad killed. He wasn't sure it could get much worse than that (oh little does he know) and he'd made a promise to stay away from her. The fact that he thought about breaking it every time he saw her was just piling on the bad.

She glances over to him, suddenly curious about the story behind that 'one'. Maybe it's something in the tone of his voice or the way he looked when he'd said it, the change in his demeanor. Whatever it is, she doesn't really think too much about the personal question before it comes out of her mouth... as is Dawn's norm with almost anything that comes out of her mouth. "What kind of bad experience happened with 'one?"

Peter furrows his brow at her question, hesitant to answer because it's still fresh. He takes a deep breath, holding it a moment. "She...her father died because I didn't...didn't listen to him. He--he had to...anyway, I promised him I wouldn't see her anymore. Before he died. So..."

That's a brief, vague summary of what had happened and it's clear from his tone of voice and his demeanor that it's still a tender sort of subject.

"Oh, death bed promises are hard. I'm sorry." And she genuinely means that. Dawn has seen a lot of death and a lot of promises both kept and broken in her short time of actually being a living breathing thing.

"Sometimes you can't fight it though, you know? I mean if your heart belongs to someone then that's where it's gonna be no matter how hard you try for it not to be." She says. "It's a time will heal it kind of thing... that is if you don't give in to it anyway."

He shakes his head a little. "It's..thanks." He appreciates the apology and the understanding.

"Yeah. That's--he's right though. I mean...I'm not good for her. I know that. I think she knows that. She just doesn't want to admit it." He's rationalized that that's the reason Gwen took so long to notice him. "Time is good though and maybe a break will...you know...be good."
